Ivanka Trump And Jared Kushner Made A Ton Of Money Last Year

Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump are unpaid senior White House advisors. They are unpaid. But don't worry too much about their finances! They don't have to worry about not bringing in any cash to pay for lunche. This power couple made $82 million in outside income between April 2017 and June 2018. The White House released filings earlier this week that show the couple's assets grew between 2016 and 2017. Last year, they had between $229 million and $786 million in assets, up from their 2016 reported assets of between $203 million and $740 million.

Ivanka and Jared brought in their staggering 2017 income from business ventures and investments that are separate from their government jobs. Ivanka made $5 million from her clothing and shoe business, $3.9 million from her share in the Trump International Hotel, and $2 million in salary and severance from the Trump Organization, and at least $5 million from a trust called Ivanka M. Trump Business Trust. The trust is valued at more than $50 million. Jared's real estate holdings brought in $1.5 million through his Westminster Management, which owns and manages more than 20,000 apartments in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Ohio.

Aaron P. Bernstein/Getty Images

During 2017, the couple's liabilities were at one point between $40 million and $200 million. However, between $13 million and $65 million have been paid off. The Office of Government Ethics requires that White House official's wealth is reported in estimates.

Jared reported assets of at least $174 million at the end of 2017. He has holdings worth as much as $710 million. At the end of 2017, Ivanka had assets of at least $55 million that could be worth as much as $75 million over time. Ivanka is the one who earned the $82 million, but Jared's filing reported he was invested in many of the same income sources.

Since Ivanka's father became president, she and her husband have stepped away from the day to day management of their businesses. They do retain ownership stakes in them, however. It should be noted that Ivanka and Jared are not legally required to sell their assets and businesses to work in the White House, but there are rules that prohibit federal employees from participating in matters in which they have a direct financial interest.

Microsoft Acquisition Makes Billionaires Out Of GitHub Founders

Microsoft announced last week that it was buying the software development platform GitHub for $7.5 billion in stock – making its founders instant billionaires. As the largest shareholder, GitHub co-founder and CEO Chris Wanstrath will receive at least $1.5 billion in Microsoft stock. Co-founders Tom Preston-Werner will receive $1.25 billion in stock and PJ Hyett will get close to $1 billion.

GitHub was founded in 2008 as a means of creating collaboration between software developers. Over the years it grew into one of the largest repositories of code in the world. Microsoft released a statement saying: "More than 28 million developers already collaborate on GitHub."

Steve Jennings/Getty Images

In 2015, GitHub's $250 million Series B financing round was led by Sequoia. The venerable firm is the second largest outside investor in the company. Andreessen Horowitz is the largest with a roughly 13.33% stake worth more than $1 billion.

The acquisition is a bit of positive press for GitHub. In 2014, co-founder Preston-Werner left the company after an investigation into claims of sexual harassment. Preston-Werner denied the allegations, but the investigation did reveal mistakes and errors in judgment on his part. In 2017, Wanstrath revealed that he planned to step down as CEO as soon as he could hire his replacement. After the buyout, Microsoft vice president Nat Friedman will become CEO of GitHub.

Koch Brothers Break With GOP, Launch Campaign To Oppose Trump's Tariffs

The political network backed by billionaire industrialists Charles and David Koch, has unveiled a multi-year, multi-million dollar plan to oppose the tariffs on imported steel and aluminum implemented by President Donald Trump and his administration. The tariffs target key allies of the U.S. in Canada, Mexico, and Europe. They were apparently the last straw for the Koch brothers. Their network has always supported conservative causes and the Republican party. The group is moving ahead with the campaign that will include lobbying, activist education, media buys, and policy analysis. The Koch network groups Americans for Prosperity, Freedom Partners, and Libre Initiative have all made announcements denouncing Trump's tariffs. The planned media and PR blitz will focus on the benefits of open trade policies.

James Davis, the executive vice president of Freedom Partners said in a statement:

"Trade lifts people out of poverty and improves lives. It is critical to America's future prosperity and our consumers, workers and companies. Tariffs and other trade barriers make us poorer. They raise prices for those who can least afford it."

JULIO CESAR AGUILAR/AFP/Getty Images

Tim Phillips, President of Americans for Prosperity also released a statement opposing the tariffs.

"The Trump administration has taken some incredibly positive steps for the American economy, but tariffs will undercut that progress and needlessly hamstring our full economic potential. There are better ways to negotiate trade deals than by punishing American consumers and businesses with higher costs."

And finally, Daniel Garza, president of the Libre Initiative, made a statement saying tariffs would especially hurt low income workers in the Hispanic community.

"Elected officials and policy leaders need to recognize that free and open trade policies make American workers and families more prosperous. The taxes and trade barriers imposed by our government on U.S. consumers raise their cost of living and impose unnecessary costs on American firms in competition with others based abroad."

The White House announced plans to move ahead with import tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum coming from Canada, Mexico, and the EU. That lead to immediate retaliation from Canada and Mexico. Leaders from the EU soon joined in levy tariffs against $7 billion in goods from the U.S. –everything from steel to rice to flip flops.

The campaign is planned to be a multi-year effort—which could have it collide with Trump's 2020 re-election hopes.

Roger Federer Is Likely To End His $7.5M Nike Contract To Make Almost 3 Times That With Uniqlo

$

Tennis star and 20-time Grand Slam champ Roger Federer is reported to be the highest-earning athlete in his chosen sport, but The Times reports that he could be on the cusp of earning even more. His endorsement deal with Nike, worth around $7.5 million a year, ended several months ago, and even though he hasn't renewed his contract or found a new clothing brand to sponsor, he's said to be eyeing a contract with Uniqlo that could be worth almost three times as much as what he was making with Nike.

Despite the tantalizing prospect of a $22 million a year deal with Uniqlo, it may also transpire that Federer decides to stay on with Nike, especially since last year he was able to get agreeable renewal terms with other high profile brands like Mercedes-Benz and Lindt. Those renewals are in addition to a new endorsement deal with Italian food company Barilla, worth a reported $40 million.

Alex Grimm/Getty Images

Federer recently returned to tennis following a brief hiatus, and was seen at the Stuttgart Open in his usual Nike gear. When asked about this by reporters, he made it clear that even if he does end up switching brands he will keep wearing Nike until a contract with a rival brand is signed:

"As long as I don't have a new contract with a clothing sponsor, I continue wearing Nike, which has been a good partner for 20 years."

And earlier in the week, Federer himself addressed the rumors of an impending switch to Uniqlo:

"They are rumours and nothing is ruled out, neither my continuity in Nike nor the end of our collaboration, nor a change to any brand … It's rumours. But I don't have a contract with Nike since March. We're talking. We'll see what happens. I'll let you know."

Whatever Federer decides, he's in a prime spot to continue securing top drawer endorsement deals from big brands, by continuing to break tennis records despite his status as a 36-year-old veteran of the sport.

Dr. Dre Facing $100M Beats Headphones Lawsuit

$

Entrepreneur Steven Lamar has a real problem with Beats by Dre business partners Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, and says he's owed more than $100 million in royalties from sales of the hugely popular headphones and other audio accessories under the Beats Electronics brand. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has the story that Lamar's lawsuit has now made it into court.

The crux of the case is that in 2006, Lamar approached Dre and Iovine with the idea to release a line of signature headphones, with designs by "renowned industrial designer" Robert Brunner. The three struck a deal, but it went sour soon after, with Dre and Iovine suing Lamar for breach of contract and eventually settling with Lamar. The terms of that settlement had Lamar relinquishing his rights in the company for a four percent royalty in headphones sold by the Beats company, which at that time was partnered with Monster Cable.

Kevin Winter/Getty Images

All good so far, but at some point Beats by Dre began releasing headphones based on new designs, and the royalty payments to Lamar had been cut from four to two percent by the summer of 2014, when they stopped altogether after Brunner's own interest in the brand was bought out. Lamar contends that he is actually owed royalties from the sale of those separate, albeit derivative, designs, and now the matter will be settled in court.

Lamar's suit was thrown out originally, but an appeals court in California reversed the decision, calling his royalties deal with Dre and co. was "ambiguous" enough to be decided on by a jury, who will now have to decide whether the original settlement applied to the first Beats headphone model, or future models based on the original one as well. Dre and Iovine say that when the deal was struck, no one in the room was even thinking about followup models since the success of the brand was far from a sure thing, while Lamar says the three discussed different models and a future product line even in those early days. Now, a jury will have to decide who's right and who, if anyone, has to pay up.

Kevin Durant Has Investments In 16 Companies – Here's What He's Learned

$

0

While winning a championship was a major priority for Kevin Durant, there was another reason he chose to leave Oklahoma City in favor of the Bay Area: investment potential. It's a lot easier to schedule a face-to-face meeting in Silicon Valley when you live in the area. Durant has taken full advantage of his surroundings, investing in multiple startups and established companies.

In total, Durant now has a piece of 16 different businesses through his company, the cleverly named Durant Company. His portfolio includes the delivery service Postmates, Arianna Huffington's Thrive Global, and LimeBike, a scooter startup. He's learned some lessons along the way that have helped lead him to entrepreneurial success.

For starters, he now better understands the hit-based model of venture capitalists. Rather than trying to hit a home run on every single investment, he focuses on getting singles, which will eventually lead to a major breakthrough.

Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

That starts with doing your homework. When Durant first arrived in Oakland, he didn't understand what it took to invest in a company. He believed entrepreneurs just threw money into a company and they hit it big.

Of course, that's not the case. Venture capital firms receive hundreds of pitches and business ideas every day. Developing a great investment portfolio requires thorough research, talking to CEOs, development teams, and understanding the industry.

Durant also makes sure to surround himself with smart, successful people. His inner circle includes mentors like Ron Conway, who invested in Facebook and Google early on; Ben Horowitz, who co-founded his own VC firm, Andreessen Horowitz; and Chris Lyons, who serves as chief-of-staff at Andreessen Horowitz.

Though he's still in the prime of his career, Durant is already considering life after basketball. And if his early investment record is any indication, he'll do just fine.

These Three Athletes Have Earned More Than $1 Billion From Salary, Endorsements, And Investments

$

0

Despite all the money that some professional athletes make, it can be very hard to reach billionaire status. After all, it usually requires a combination of salary, endorsement deals, and shrewd investments. It's not an easy milestone. In fact, only three athletes ever have reached billionaire status. And they've all had dominant runs in their respective sports. Check out the trio below.

Michael Jordan – $1.8 Billion

Perhaps the most impressive part of Michael Jordan's net worth is that so little of it comes from his actual oncourt salary. In 15 seasons, he brought home $93,285,000. In fact, aside from his two final seasons with the Chicago Bulls, Jordan made just a shade over $30 million.

Of course, the majority of Jordan's wealth is thanks to his many endorsement deals. His Jordan Brand shoes are one of the most popular in the world; even 15 years after his retirement, they're still in high demand. And deals with companies like Nike and Gatorade have helped him earn more than a reported $100 million each year from endorsements.

Tiger Woods – $1.45 Billion

When Tiger Woods first came onto the golf scene, it seemed like no one could stand in his way. Though he's since lost his No. 1 ranking thanks to a variety of injuries and personal issues, his career earnings on the course are more than anyone else – by a long shot. Woods has taken home more than $111.5 million throughout his career. By comparison, Phil Mickelson is golf's second-highest career earner, at about $87.3 million.

Woods also has enjoyed a lucrative partnership with Nike, and released several installments of golf video games with EA Sports. Outside of a handful of golf apparel and equipment sponsors, Woods has endorsement deals with Upper Deck, Monster Energy, and Kowa, a Japanese pharmaceutical company. If you find yourself in Japan, you'll likely see Woods doing commercials for the company.

Floyd Mayweather – $1.01 Billion

Mayweather is the most recent addition to the billionaire club, thanks to his superfight with Conor McGregor last year. Mayweather made more than $100 million from that fight alone. He's reportedly retired with a perfect 50-0, 26 knockout record, though it's hard to imagine him turning down another fight offering that much money.

Mayweather has had a number of sponsors over the course of his career, though most of his earnings have actually come inside the ring. Burger King, FanDuel, and Hublot have each paid $1 million to sponsor the boxer. However, because of domestic abuse charges and a history of controversial rants, companies tend to stay away from lucrative endorsement deals with Mayweather. Despite that reluctance, Mayweather can count himself a billionaire.
