This 1963 Ferrari GTO Is Now The Most Expensive Car Ever Sold, At $70M

A 1963 Ferrari GTO, one of just 36 ever produced, is now the most expensive car ever sold. CNBC reports that Marcel Massini, said to be the foremost collectible Ferrari expert in the world, says that one has been sold in a private deal for a total of $70 million, breaking the previously established record by a healthy margin.

That previous record was for a different 1963 GTO, which sold for $52 million back in 2013. And Massini says that trend of steadily increasing value of the cars will only continue for the foreseeable future:

"We will see a GTO sell for $100 million in the next two to three years … I have little doubt."

Ferrari GTOs have long been at the top of the collectible car pyramid for various reasons, including "their rarity, power, beauty and success on the race track," and in 2014 another 62-63 GTO went for a relative steal at $38 million.

Mike Hewitt /Allsport

The lucky owner of what is now the most expensive car in the world? David MacNeil, founder of WeatherTech, who made his fortune in the industry of floor mats for automobiles. He was previously known to be a passionate collector of Ferrari cars, and his latest acquisition puts him in an elite "GTO Club" along with fashion moguls Ralph Lauren and Lawrence Stroll as well as Walmart heir Rob Walton. You can check out some of the other owners of these precious (and increasingly expensive) vehicles right here.

Previously, the GTO now, owned by MacNeil, is believed to have belonged to one Christian Gläsel, another multimillionaire member of that "GTO Club." He reportedly got the car back in 2003 when he purchased it for an undisclosed sum – however, it's probably safe to assume, given the 15 years that have elapsed since then, that the sale represented a very healthy profit for the German businessman.

Western Kentucky's Big Red Mascot Is Part Of A $250 Million Lawsuit

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers are coming off a trip to the NIT Semifinals, but if you asked most people to name the school's most distinguishable characteristic, they'd probably say it's the team's mascot, Big Red. And now, Big Red is back in the news as part of a 15-year, $250 million lawsuit.

In 2003, Western Kentucky and the companies that owned the school's international merchandise licenses, sued former Milan prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's Mediaset and Antonio Ricci, who created Gabibbo, a character that looked eerily similar to Big Red.

The school lost that initial suit, then re-filed with Ralph Carey, Big Red's creator. Carey developed Big Red in 1979, and pointed to a newspaper article from 1991 where Ricci acknowledged that Gabibbo used to be "a mascot for a basketball team in Kentucky."

Rob Foldy/Getty Images

Though Western Kentucky won in the lower courts, the Italian defendants emerged victorious in the court of appeals in Milan. However, the highest court ruled in favor of Carey last week. The court said that although the characters weren't exactly alike, there was enough evidence of plagiarism based in the evolution of the two characters.

The case will now move back to the Milan Court of Appeals after being re-filed. If Carey and Western Kentucky can finally win the whole case, it'll be sweeter than any kind of NCAA Tournament upset.

Golden State's Draymond Green Plans To Be A Billionaire By Age 40

Draymond Green and the Golden State Warriors are on the verge of winning their third NBA Championship this season. However, Green has his eye on an even bigger prize. He wants to be not just a billionaire, but a multi billionaire and he wants his first billion to be in the bank by the time he is 40. Green is 28, so he has 12 years to attain his goal.

Green currently earns about $17.5 million a year playing in the NBA. He knows that becoming a billionaire isn't going to be easy and that puts him in the right place for it. Research has shown that the wealthiest people think big and set unreasonably high expectations.

Lachlan Cunningham/Getty Images

Green has set his life up to aid in his quest to become a billionaire. For one thing, he hangs out with the right people. He knows he should always be curious and continue learning. Green believes that all young athletes should take the time to find the right mentors. That is solid thinking because who you hang out with matters. When you're exposed to people who are more successful than you are, it expands your thinking. We become like the people we hang out with. That's why successful people are attracted to successful people.

Another thing Green has going for him in his quest to become a billionaire is the fact that he makes smart investments. The Golden State Warriors locker room talk is frequently about investing, which makes sense given how close they are to Silicon Valley. The players discuss the investments they have and the startups they want to get involved with.

And finally, Green keeps his spending under control. Sure, he can admit he's made some dumb moves—like that time he spent $21,000 on one night in a club. However, he learned a lesson from that. Now he always considers his long term goal. He won't spend money without asking himself "How is this helping me become a billionaire?"

Draymond Green has a net worth of $20 million.

Cleveland Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert Is Investing $5 Billion Into Downtown Detroit

$

Dan Gilbert is best known as the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers. But he actually got his start in Michigan, founding Quicken Loans, the largest mortgage lending company in America. Quicken Loans turned Gilbert into a billionaire. And now, he's looking to revitalize the city that got him to where he is today.

Gilbert created Rock Ventures, which runs all of his real estate via a company called Bedrock. By Gilbert's estimate, he's involved with at least 100 companies in downtown Detroit, pouring in $3.5 billion into the area already. Bedrock has another $2.1 billion invested in ongoing projects.

All of Gilbert's companies follow the same 20 "isms," or principles that he hopes the organization's culture aspires to achieve. Gilbert believes it's impossible to run a successful company without a set of guiding principles. That way, when the time comes for decisions, actions, and other items to prioritize, there's a framework businesses can follow.

Jason Miller/Getty Images

Interestingly, Gilbert says that a lot of investments happened naturally; he didn't necessarily seek them out. Whenever a new opportunity arises – such as a person from his network starting a business that fits within Rock Ventures' principles – Gilbert considers the capacity, capital, and talent needed to take a shot on the opportunity, then decides whether to pull the trigger.

Another element of Gilbert's success: ensuring the businesses he invests in have a real link to their city. He wanted to keep the urban feel of Detroit while helping transform the city. Gilbert calls his companies "more-than-profit" organizations, toeing the line between a for-profit and nonprofit. In his experience, the more a business invests in its community, the more benefit they'll see in other aspects of their organization, like revenue.

Of course, Gilbert may be best remembered for his scathing letter to the city of Cleveland after LeBron James left the Cavs for the Miami Heat in 2010. Gilbert says his biggest takeaway from the entire situation was that, in the public eye of the Internet age, anything you put online will be remembered.

Now, Gilbert's trying to be remembered for something else – helping Detroit become a booming metropolis once again.

Crypto Millionaire John McAfee Announces 2020 Presidential Run

$

0

Cryptocurrency millionaire John McAfee is ignoring recent history's lessons in what can happen when you run for president as a publicity stunt, and announcing a presidential run in the quickly approaching 2020 campaign. His particular cause, naturally, is cryptocurrency, and in his campaign announcement on Twitter he explained his reasons for throwing his hat in the ring once again:

"In spite of past refusals, I have decided to again run for POTUS in 2020. If asked again by the Libertarian party, I will run with them. If not, I will create my own party. I believe this will best serve the crypto community by providing the ultimate campaign platform for us."

McAffee's reference to the Libertarian party pertains to the last US presidential election, when he was one of the Libertarian candidates who lost to party nominee Gary Johnson. And in a followup tweet, he made his pragmatic approach to his own prospects in such a campaign explicit:

"Don't think that I have a chance of winning. I do not. But what truly changes America is not the president, but the process of creating one. If my following is sufficient I get to stand the world's largest stage and talk to the everyone, as I did last time, to tell the truth."

Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

If anyone should run for president as the "cryptocurrency candidate," it's probably McAfee, who made his name and his fortune as the founder of McAfee Antivirus Software but who has since become the leading social media proponent of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. And he recently made the announcement (perhaps not coincidentally with his presidential run) that he is developing his own physical cryptocurrency called the McAfee Redemption Unit, or MRU. And that's not even his first — last year he reportedly released a now-discontinued cryptocurrency called McAfee Coin. Other presidential candidates will hopefully demonstrate mastery of other topics in time for 2020, but it's doubtful anyone will challenge McAfee on crypto.

LeBron James Earned $33 Million This Season…But He Only Received Half Of It

$

It's good to be the King. LeBron James, fresh off of his eighth straight appearance in the NBA Finals, is still one of the top names in the sport. All eyes will be on him as NBA free agency gets underway in a few weeks. Will he stay in Cleveland? Will he hop over to an Eastern Conference rival like the Sixers or Celtics? Will he finally head out west and join an L.A. team or the Rockets or Spurs?

We don't know LeBron's decision just yet, but we do know one thing: he's going to lose a lot of the money from his contract.

James had a $33 million deal with the Cavs this past season. By the end of the year, he had only made about half of that, thanks to taxes, fees, and other costs. Here's a look at where all of that money went.

Jason Miller/Getty Images

LeBron spent $14 million in taxes alone ($11.9 million in federal and $2.1 million towards state taxes). He also paid $950,000 in agent fees and poured another $18,000 into his 401(k).

The NBA has an escrow system, where players pay 10% of their salaries to balance the basketball-related income that gets split between the players and owners. James spent $3.3 million in the escrow this year, though he did earn some money back because the league's revenues were higher than the forecasted numbers.

In total, LeBron took home an estimated $16.7 million. Hardly anything to scoff at, though it's pretty spectacular how much money athletes put towards taxes.

Depending on where he signs this summer, James has a chance to earn more money in a single season than any NBA player before him. Uncle Sam is already licking his chops in anticipation.
