John McCain Net Worth: A Look At The Life And Fortune Of The Senator And War Hero

0

Senator John McCain has been at home in Arizona for months battling what is reported to be the end stages of an aggressive brain cancer. He's been spending time at the ranch he and his wife Cindy own in beautiful Sedona, Arizona. Visitors have been flocking to the ranch to spend time with, and pay their respects to, the well regarded politician. In a touching moment, a visit from Joe Biden showcased the bipartisan nature both men have nearly always displayed in their careers.

Senator McCain's new memoir, The Restless Wave was released recently. Many know the 81-year-old as the 2008 Republican presidential nominee. He is also a veteran of the Vietnam war and a former prisoner of war. He has a net worth of $16 million and an impressive real estate portfolio, which he shares with his wife. Though McCain had a long career in both the Navy and the U.S. Senate, the bulk of the family fortune he shares with his wife comes from her. She is an heiress to Hensley & Co., one of the largest Anheuser-Busch distributors in the country. Cindy inherited a major stake in the company her father founded and became its chairman when her father passed away. Cindy McCain has a net worth of $200 million.

John McCain was born on August 29, 1936 at Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone. His dad, John S. McCain Jr was a naval officer. His paternal grandfather John S. McCain Sr. was a four star admiral in the Navy. At the time of his birth, the Panama Canal was under the control of the United States. As a child, he moved around with his father, mother Roberta, older sister Sandy, and younger brother Joe to various Naval posts. McCain attended 20 different schools before the family settled in Northern Virginia. He graduated from high school in 1954 and followed his grandfather and father and entered the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. He graduated in 1958.

McCain began his post collegiate military career as an ensign. He went through two and a half years of training to become a naval aviator. He completed flight school in 1960 with a reputation of a partier. He was assigned to the aircraft carriers USS Intrepid and USS Enterprise as a pilot of ground-attack aircraft. He was a decent pilot who improved over time, though he was known for taking chances and pushing the envelope. After marrying his first wife Carol in 1965, he adopted her two children and had a daughter with her. He requested a combat assignment and in 1967 at 30 years old, shipped off to fight in the Vietnam War.

On October 26, 1967, John McCain was flying his 23rd bombing mission in North Vietnam when his plane was shot down over Hanoi. He fractured both arms and a leg when he was ejected from the aircraft and nearly drowned when he parachuted right into a lake. He was pulled ashore by North Vietnamese soldiers who then used the butt of a rifle to crush his shoulder before bayonetting him. He was then taken to Hoa Lo Prison, called the Hanoi Hilton. His captor refused to treat his injuries even though he was seriously wounded and injured. He was beaten and interrogated and only given medical care when it was discovered his father was a high ranking admiral. McCain's status as a POW made the front pages of major newspapers across the U.S.

McCain spent six weeks in the hospital where he received substandard care. He was in a chest cast, he lost 50 pounds, and his hair had turned white. In December 1967, he was placed in a cell with two other American POWs who didn't think he'd live much more than a handful of days. In March 1968, McCain was placed in solitary confinement. He remained there for two years.

In mid-1968, McCain's father was named the commander of all U.S. forces in Vietnam and McCain was offered release, because they wanted to appear merciful—which would allow them to create propaganda about McCain and his father and their role in the father and son reunion. McCain refused their offer unless every POW who had been captured before him was also released.

Starting in August 1968, McCain was severely tortured. Every two hours he was tied up and beaten. At the same time, he was suffering from dysentery. The whole incident and his injuries drove him to the brink of suicide. McCain was a POW for five and a half years. He was released on March 14, 1973. The injuries at the hands of the North Vietnamese left him incapable of raising his arms above his head for the rest of his life.

McCain returned to the U.S. and was reunited with his family only to learn that his wife Carol had a tragic auto accident in 1969 that left her with crippling injuries. McCain immediately entered treatment for his injuries. Months of grueling physical therapy led to his flight status being reinstated in 1974.

In April 1979, McCain met Cindy Hensley, a teacher from Phoenix. He began dating her while at the same time asking his wife to grant him a divorce. John and Carol divorced in April 1980. John and Cindy were married in May 1980. As Cindy was the heiress to a large fortune, the couple had a prenuptial agreement that kept almost all of the Hensley family money and assets in her name. John and Cindy have always kept their finances apart and file income tax returns separately.

In April 1981, McCain retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of captain. He had decided to run for Congress. He moved to Arizona following his retirement and was granted a disability pension from the Navy. He has a number of military honors including two Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, two Legions of Merit, a Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and the Prisoner of War medal.

Once he had moved to Phoenix, he went to work for his father in law as Vice President of Public Relations of the beer distributor. He was able to meet a number of powerful people who helped his political ambition in this role. In 1982 he ran for Congress for the first time and won. He ran for U.S. Senate in 1986 and won. The rest of his political career is well known. He's been in politics since that 1986 win.

U.S. Senators are well compensated, but McCain doesn't really need that salary. The standard US Senator's salary is $174,000. McCain also received more than $73,000 from his Navy pension in 2015.

McCain and his wife Cindy have an enormous net worth. Most of the McCain's money is in Cindy's name per their prenuptial agreement. In addition to Cindy's money, the McCain's have John's government salary, Navy pension, and an enormous real estate portfolio. The McCains have such a large real estate portfolio that when  asked how many houses they owned in 2008, he didn't know! The McCains own a 15-acre ranch in Sedona, Arizona as well as a two story condo in a 12-story glass building in downtown Phoenix. They also have a loft at the Biltmore Lofts in Phoenix. They paid $700,000 cash for it in 2007 and gave it to their daughter Meghan. The McCains have also owned five California beach houses and condos over the years. Their Arlington, Virginia condo was purchased by the Cindy Hensley McCain Trust for $375,000 in 1993. It was sold for $1.2 million in 2017.

When McCain was running for President in 2008, it was reported that he and his wife owned 13 cars. McCain's car was a 2004 Cadillac CTS. He and his wife also own (or owned) a 2005 Volkswagen; 2001 Honda sedan; a 2007 Ford truck; a 1960 Jeep; a 2008 Jeep Wrangler; a 2000 Lincoln; a 2001 GMC SUV; three NEV Gem electric vehicles, a Toyota Prius for Meghan; and Cindy McCain's Lexus.

The McCain's are huge philanthropists. Not only did John donate all of the $1.7 million he earned from his 2007 book "Hard Call: The Art of Great Decisions" to charity, they also donated $950,000 between 2001 and 2006 to the John and Cindy McCain Foundation. The foundation made contributions of about $1.6 million. They donated half a million to the private schools their children attended, $210,000 to the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, as well as a number of other causes the McCains support.

10 Books For Your Summer Reading List, Recommended By Bill Gates

0
0

If reading the same books as one of our billionaire idols can make us a bit smarter, then we'll do it! It is a well known fact that Bill Gates loves to read. He reads about 50 books every year and writes about those books and his thoughts on them on his blog Gates Notes. He reads a wide range of books from fiction to historical works to memoirs. The following 10 books have all been picked from the past few years of Gates' summer reading lists. If you're looking to be inspired and learn something, pick up one or more of these Bill Gates' recommended books.

"Shoe Dog" by Phil Knight
Phil Knight tells the story of how to built the multi-billion dollar shoe and apparel company, Nike, into a worldwide business.

"He doesn't fit the mold of the bold, dashing entrepreneur. He's shy, introverted, and often insecure. And yet, in spite of or perhaps because of his unusual character traits, he was able to realize the "Crazy Idea," as he calls it, to do something different with his life and create his own shoe company."

"Hillbilly Elegy" by J.D. Vance
This book tells the story of the author's experience growing up poor in rural Ohio. He went into the Marines and then to Yale Law School. Today he is a venture capitalist with a unique outlook on how life is for the poor and how that explains the current political climate in the U.S.

Gates wrote on his blog last year that the

"real magic lies in the story itself and Vance's bravery in telling it."

"A Full Life" by Jimmy Carter
President Jimmy Carter's latest memoir is about growing up in a small Georgia town.

"I loved reading about Carter's improbable rise to the world's highest office. The book will help you understand how growing up in rural Georgia in a house without running water, electricity, or insulation shaped—for better and for worse—his time in the White House."

"Lincoln in the Bardo" by George Saunders
This book caused Gates to rethink everything he knew about President Abraham Lincoln. The novel is set up as a conversation among ghosts, including Lincoln's dead son.

In May, Gates wrote on his blog:

"I got new insight into the way Lincoln must have been crushed by the weight of both grief and responsibility. This is one of those fascinating, ambiguous books you'll want to discuss with a friend when you're done."

"Factfulness" by Hans Rosling
In this book, doctor and statistician, Hans Rolling, puts forth the hypothesis that people are taking an overly emotional view of the world today.

Gates wrote on his blog in May that he's been recommending this book since "the day it came out."

Rosling passed away in 2017 and Gates said:  this book is "a fitting final word from a brilliant man, and one of the best books I've ever read."

"Leonardo Da Vinci" by Walter Isaacson
Gates has called da Vinci "one of the most fascinating people ever," which is probably why he recommends Walter Isaacson's biography of the famous renaissance artist.

Gates wrote: "Isaacson does the best job I've seen of pulling together the different strands of Leonardo's life and explaining what made him so exceptional. A worthy follow-up to Isaacson's great biographies of Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs."

"Origin Story: A Big History of Everything" by David Christian
In May, Gates wrote that "Origin Story" will give you a "greater appreciation of humanity's place in the universe."

"The Heart" by Maylis De Kerangal
Gates mostly reads nonfiction but this novel grabbed him. The book tells the story of a heart transplant and the young man who was killed in an accident whose parents decided to donate his heart.

"While you'll find this book in the fiction section at your local bookstore, what de Kerangal has done here in this exploration of grief is closer to poetry than anything else." Gates wrote on his blog last year.

"The Myth of the Strong Leader" by Archie Brown
This book is about the author's 2014 study on the great leaders in history. In 2016, Gates wrote about this book:

"Brown shows that the leaders who make the biggest contributions to history and humanity generally are not the ones we perceive to be strong leaders. Instead, they tend to be the ones who collaborate, delegate, and negotiate—and recognize that no one person can or should have all the answers."

"The Grid" by Gretchen Bakke
This book is about the electrical infrastructure, and Gates heaped praise on it:

"This book, about our aging electrical grid, fits in one of my favorite genres: "Books About Mundane Stuff That Are Actually Fascinating. Even if you have never given a moment's thought to how electricity reaches your outlets, I think this book would convince you that the electrical grid is one of the greatest engineering wonders of the modern world. I think you would also come to see why modernizing the grid is so complex and so critical for building our clean-energy future."

Professional athletes are making more money that ever thanks to television contracts. The NBA gets the biggest benefit from this. There Are Some Familiar Names On California's List Of Biggest Income Tax Dodgers

California released its annual list of the top 500 personal income tax dodgers and there are quite a few familiar names on it. Tori Spelling, Chris Tucker, and Macy Gray all earned a spot on the list due to their unpaid California income taxes. And trust me, as a freelancer, the California Franchise Tax Board is pretty relentless!

Tori Spelling and her husband Dean McDermott owe the state of California $282,685.92. Spelling has found herself in financial trouble ever since her father Aaron Spelling died in 2006. Tori and her brother were expecting to inherit a large portion of her father's $600 million fortune. However, Aaron Spelling made Candy Spelling the executor of his estate. Tori and her brother are estranged from their mother and only received $800,000 each. Spelling has been vocal about her financial struggles. In her 2013 memoir, she said she struggles because she grew up rich and still spends like she is.

"Even That was then and this is now, however. Spelling had tried to divert attention away from her financial issues in recent years. In a 2016 interview with People, she insisted that she and McDermott were not bankrupt or struggling. She said:

"I thought I was being relatable, talking about how celebrities go through financial struggles, too, we make mistakes, too. We're not perfect, we have made a lot of choices financially with real estate that didn't work out … and that just escalated into this story about financial struggles, bankruptcy. To this day that haunts me!"

Chris Tucker is in even worse shape with the state of California. According to the list, he owes California more than $1.2 million in back taxes from 2017 alone. This isn't the first time that Tucker has been in trouble for not paying his tax debt. In 2014, the state of Georgia put a lien of $2.5 million on him over unpaid taxes. He blamed that one poor accounting and business management.

Singer Macy Gray is also on the list for $240,000 in back taxes. She's been vocal about her financial struggles as well. In 2014, she told The Telegraph:

"I'm a spender, unfortunately. As soon as I get money, I can't wait to spend it."

Another Hollywood name on this list is David Glasser, the former president of the Weinstein Company. He has a tax bill with the state of California that dates back to 2012 and amounts to $804,892.  Glasser became president and CEO of the Weinstein Company after Harvey Weinstein was fired in the wake of all of the sexual misconduct allegations. Glasser was then fired in February when the New York Attorney General accused him of knowing about Weinstein's sexual misconduct and doing anything about it. Glasser is suing the Weinstein Company for more than $85 million in damages.

Charitable Giving In The U.S. In 2017 Was Bigger Than The GDP Of Ireland

0
0

The United States' charitable giving last year totaled more than $400 billion for the first time. Giving is up thanks to massive donations from billionaires and a surging stock market. The total amount donated by individuals, foundations, corporations, and estates came out to about $410 billion in 2017. That's more than the gross domestic product of Ireland! Total donations for 2017 were up 5.2% from 2016's $389.64 billion. It is heartwarming to see that in a time of great political and societal divisiveness, Americans' commitment to philanthropy remains strong.

Donations increased in eight of the nine charitable sectors that Giving USA has defined. The only one to see a decline was the one for international affairs. The biggest increase was for money donated to foundations. That sector was up 15.5%. That increase was led by huge donations by major philanthropists to their own foundations such as Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan's $2 billion donation and Michael and Susan Dell's $1 billion donation.

MOLLY RILEY/AFP/Getty Images

Education, health, arts and culture, environment and animal welfare all saw greater than 6% increases in giving in 2017. Public-society benefit organizations – which deal with issues like voter education, civil rights, civil liberties and consumer rights also saw giving increase by at least 6%.

Despite the record setting $410 billion total, the total level of generosity isn't any larger than it was decades ago. In 2017, charitable giving by individuals was equal to 2% of total disposable income. That's the same rate as it was in 1978 and it is down from the 2.4% it was in 2000. The percentage of U.S. households participating in charitable giving is also on the decline. In 2000 67% of households gave to charity. In 2015, the most recent year that data is available, it was 56.6%. Generally, the 2008 recession caused middle and lower class families to reduce or eliminate their charitable giving. Changes in tax law that no longer give people a deduction for charitable donations could further reduce the rate at which middle and lower class households donate to charity. The rate for the wealthiest 20% of households remains basically unchanged.

Los Angeles Couple Makes $85 Million Bet On LA Schools

There's a line in the song "You Might Die Trying" from the Dave Matthews Band that says: "When you give, you begin to live." This is a statement that Melanie and Richard Lundquist can relate to. The Lundquists are philanthropists from the wealthy Los Angeles suburb of Palos Verde Estates. A decade ago, they pledged $50 million to schools in the most impoverished Los Angeles neighborhoods. Every year, they wrote a check for $5 million to fund teacher development training, campus improvements, and additional resources. The Lundquists have just renewed their commitment to the LAUSD by signing up for another 10 years of giving with $35 million for the Partnership for L.A. Schools.

The Lundquists are thrilled to see that since their commitment to the LAUSD, graduation and test scores have improved at most of the 18 schools taking part in the Partnership. Melanie doesn't believe that kids today have the opportunities that she and her husband had growing up in Los Angeles.

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

Melanie Lundquist was born in 1949 and grew up in the Los Angeles suburb of Sherman Oaks. She is a third generation Angeleno on her father's side. Growing up, Melanie heard stories about how kind her grandparents on her mother's side were to those who needed help during the Great Depression.  He grandfather founded what is now known as the City of Hope. While a student at USC, Lundquist's mother raised funds to start a dental clinic for Los Angeles children who otherwise could not afford it. Lundquist's family consistently stressed the importance of being kind, giving back, and being civically minded.

Lundquist, several generations of her family, and her future husband completed her K-12 education in LAUSD schools. Back in those days, she had access to arts, music, physical education, and civics—programs that have since been cut by the LAUSD due to budget shortfalls. She attended LA Valley College, a junior college, for two years before transferring to USC to get her bachelor's and master's degrees. She moved to Redondo Beach with her Masters in communicative disorders, speech pathology, and audiology and met her future husband Richard, who lived in her apartment building and was also an alumnus of USC.

It bothers Melanie that USC met their fundraising goal of $6 billion ahead of schedule, while funding for California's public schools per student is in the bottom tier nationally. She and her husband could have chosen to give their money to their alma mater, but the LAUSD needed the funds more. The Partnership has added $650 of spending for each of the roughly 14,500 students on participating campuses.

The Partnership for L.A. Schools was born out of an attempt by former L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to take over the LAUSD. When that failed, Villaraigosa and his supporters in the movement were given a chance to see what it could do with the 10 lowest performing schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Since that time eight more schools have been added. These schools have to play by the same rules, are regular schools and use LAUSD's union contracts, but they have a nonprofit administration, making them a sort of hybrid between traditional schools and charter schools.

Melanie Lundquist was inspired to get involved and support LAUSD schools after hearing Villaraigosa discuss the state of local public education during his campaign for mayor. She was ready from the start to support LAUSD for more than 10 years. It has taken 50 years of funding cuts and neglect to put the district in the position it is in. It will take more than 10 years to fix it. In fact, if there is still work to be done in a decade, she'll sign on for another 10 years. She would be thrilled to visit campuses for 30 years. She's gotten a lot of inspiration from students, teachers, and principals.

The Lundquists' goal has always been to transform schools into safer, more collaborative environments. Melanie prefers to shift the credit for how successful the Partnership has been to the teachers, principals, and students. She and her husband have gotten a lot out of their $85 million investment in the LAUSD. Lundquist stresses that she'd never seen so many bright kids as she has since she and her husband joined the Partnership.

The 5 Books Mark Cuban Is Reading This Summer

0
0

Summer is supposed to be a heavy reading season, but that concept is usually paired with the idea of "summer beach reads," usually a good thriller or some other genre of novel, that you can sink your teeth into on vacation. Billionaire Mark Cuban recently spoke to CNBC on the subject of his own summer reading schedule, however, and there's not a Dan Brown or Agatha Christie novel in the whole bunch. Instead, he's keeping his reading diet non-fictional and cerebral (although I hope for his own sake he's slipping some Ian Fleming in there without telling anyone). Here are the five books he specifically cited as making up his upcoming summer reading list:

1. The Undoing Project by Michael Lewis

The Undoing Project is a 2016 book about Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, two Israeli psychologist who together researched the science behind human error, bias, and general uncertainty. But the book's author tells CNBC that the two scientists had quirky, unusual personalities that might hold the reader's interest even above and beyond the pair's scientific findings. Tversky in particular "had this preternatural ability to never do anything he didn't want to do," according to Lewis:
"He would look at his mail, and if he didn't want to open it, he'd toss it in the garbage can. He had a 'What can they do to me?' rule. If they can't do anything to me, I'm just going to throw this stuff away."

2. Our Mathematical Universe: My Quest for the Ultimate Nature of Reality by Max Tegmark

M.I.T physics professor Max Tegmark's theory on the "ultimate nature of reality" is extremely heady stuff. In this 2014 book he proposes that reality as we know it is merely part of a huge mathematical structure, and what is often referred to in comics and scifi stories as the "Multiverse."

3. Political Tribes by Amy Chua

Cuban has made no secret of his own political ambitions, and what better way to acquaint oneself with the lay of the political landscape than a book about how tribalism has come to dominate American politics? Cuban has neglected to rule out a 2020 presidential run, so maybe he'll get some good ideas from this 2018 book on that very subject.

4. That's What She Said: What Men Need to Know (and Women Need to Tell Them) About Working Together by Joanne Lipman

Even billionaires have to cope with evolving gender norms in the workplace, and to his credit Cuban says he plans to bone up on the subject by taking in this book.

5. The Great Revolt: Inside the Populist Coalition Reshaping American Politics by Salena Zito and Bradd Todd

Finally, Cuban says he wants to explore the voting blocs that made a Donald Trump presidency possible, a reasonable choice from a person who's not been shy about criticizing Trump ever since he first became a serious candidate for the job. This book is likely a good way to do that, composed as it is of more than 300 interviews with Trump voters and supporters.

How Much Is LeBron Worth To The Cavs – And The City Of Cleveland?

0
0

When LeBron James returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the summer of 2014, he had one goal in mind: bring the city a championship. He accomplished that goal in 2016, ending a 52-year championship drought in the city. He came close three other times, leading Cleveland to the NBA Finals in 2015, 2017, and 2018.

It's anyone's guess where LeBron will end up next season. If he does decide to leave Cleveland, the city will take a substantial hit of more than $300 million.

Right now, the Cavs are worth about $1.3 billion, largely thanks to James. He regularly sits atop the most purchased player jerseys; he brings immense talent to the basketball court, helping with attendance numbers; and his presence has been so dominant that Quicken Loans is able to undergo a $140 million renovation project.

This wouldn't be the first time LeBron left the Cavs, but the economic impact this time around would be felt a lot more. When James headed to Miami in 2010, the Cavs' franchise value dropped from $476 million to $355 million in just one season. A similar 25 percent decrease this time around would do nearly three times the damage.

Just take a look at the Cavs' average attendance numbers with LeBron on the roster. The team averaged 20,042 people per game during LeBron's first and second stints, and managed only 17,390 per game during the four years he was in Miami.

Of course, while it's impossible to completely measure LeBron's value to Cleveland, there are a ton of projects that likely don't happen without his involvement in the city.

Cleveland hosted the 2016 Republican National Convention. A $465 million convention center was brainstormed and developed before James left for Miami, finally opening in 2013. And the city has been a top-30 city for booking events over the past two years. It's never even made the top 50 before.

Harvard and Case Western University professor Daniel Shoag developed a research paper looking into the effect of LeBron's presence in both Cleveland and Miami. While with the Heat, there was no noticeable uptick for businesses within a mile radius of American Airlines Arena. In the mile radius of Quicken Loans Arena, 13 percent more business for food and drink establishments, and 24 percent more employment.

However, businesses have to prepare for the very real possibility that LeBron may not be in a Cavs uniform next season. That starts with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert.

From 2019 through 2022, the most valuable seats in his Quicken Loans Arena were sold on a three-year minimum. And if LeBron doesn't re-sign in Cleveland? There's no discount.

Life without LeBron will no doubt have an impact on the city. But both the Cavs and other businesses throughout town have been here before. They're hoping this time around, they're ready to withstand the blow.

How Much Money Does An NBA Draft Pick Make?

0
0

The NBA Draft is an exciting time for everyone involved. There's hope everywhere. Fans celebrate their next potential franchise savior. Teams welcome the (hopefully) missing pieces to their playoff successes. And the players get to embark on their dream – playing in the NBA. And boy, does that dream come with a nice little monetary bonus attached to it.

The league uses a sliding scale for incoming rookies. This scale changes annually, and isn't an exact reflection of how much a rookie will make. Teams can pay a player anywhere from 80 to 120 percent of the player's salary at their draft spot. But one constant remains: it pays to be a No. 1 pick.

Whether it's DeAndre Ayton, Luka Doncic, or another player, the No. 1 selection this year will make about $6.8 million. If the Suns opt to pay 120 percent of the rookie scale, that salary goes up to nearly $8.18 million.

And that's just for the 2018-19 season. For a No. 1 pick, the scale is about $7.98 million in year two and $8.36 million in the third year, which is a team option. The fourth year is also a team option worth 26.1 percent more than the third year. Then the team can extend a qualifying offer worth 30 percent more than year four.

All that math is no fun, so we did it for you: the No. 1 selection in the draft could potentially make a little more than $40.43 million over four years, or about $56.88 million.

Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images

For comparison, last year's No. 1 pick Markelle Fultz made about $7.02 million this past year, which works out to about $500,000 per game since he only made 14 appearances during the regular season.

Assuming the Sixers extend his team options, Fultz will take home $37.4 million over four years. If the Sixers extend a qualifying offer, Fultz's salary will be around $53.4 million over five seasons.

All that is to say this year's No. 1 pick can make in the range of $3 to $3.5 million more than Fultz over his first four to five years in the league.

Contrast that with the final pick of the first round, No. 30. That spot's sliding scale starts at $1.35 million. Over four years, that player could earn just under $9.11 million. That's not even a quarter of what the No. 1 pick makes.

Interestingly enough, the salaries of later picks are more strongly tied to their performance. If the team exercises its option, the No. 30 pick gets a raise of 80.5 percent from year three to year four – or can sign a qualifying offer for 50 percent of his third-year salary.

In other words, a player selected with the 30th pick can receive a huge bonus at the end of his rookie deal. While the total overall is still less than what No. 1 is making, it's gotta feel good to make nearly double what you just took home the previous season.

While being No. 1 is obviously the cream of the crop, other rookies can still make a pretty sizable chunk of change.

The No. 2 selection's sliding scale starts at just under $6.10 million. Over four years, he can make almost $36.2 million, If he plays well enough for a qualifying offer, he can take home just shy of $51 million over five seasons.

No. 3's first year salary begins at $5.47 million. The No. 4 and No. 5 picks come in at $4.93 million and $4.47 million, respectively.

Where things really get crowded is the jump from No. 10 to No. 11. The fourth-year team option is a 27.5 percent increase over year three for the No. 10 pick, while the No. 11 pick gets a 32.7 percent increase over that same timeframe. The grand total over four years starts at about $14.7 million for the No. 10 pick and $14.2 million for the No. 11 pick. That's a lot closer than the gap between #1 and #2.

Going down the lottery, the fourth-year raise moves from 32.7 percent at No. 11 all the way to 48.1 percent at the No. 14 selection. Players taken in the second-half of the draft get much higher bonuses proportionate to their salaries.
