Late Billionaire Dinu Patriciu's Heirs Owe $226M To Romanian Government

A Romanian court has made a decision involving the heirs to the fortune of billionaire Dinu Patriciu, who died back in 2014. Patriciu was survived by Ana and Maria Patriciu, his two daughters, as well as Dana Rodica Patriciu, his second wife, and now they're on the hook for about $226 million in American dollars owed to the Romanian Ministry of Public Finance, as reported by Profit.ro.

The decision, which is not final and can still be appealed by the heirs, has to do with a sum of around $58.5 million that Patriciu recovered from Libya in 2001, following a complicated series of business transactions that eventually allowed Patriciu to sell off an international oil group called Rompetrol to Kazakhstan's state oil company KazMunayGas in 2007 and become a billionaire in the process.

DANIEL MIHAILESCU/AFP/Getty Images

It's part of a famous "Libyan unpaid claim" that reportedly goes all the way back to the 90s, but if you want more specific information on the situation you may have to ask a Romanian about it since details on it in English appears to be scarce (not to mention confusing). Suffice it to say for now, the Romanian government believes that the money should have gone into the state treasury immediately after it was recovered, but Patriciu kept it instead and used it to grow his $1.5 billion fortune. Now, Romania wants it from his heirs, and they want it with interest, which brings us to that $226 million figure.

The Romanian court ruling states that Patriciu's three heirs must pay the $226 million in proportion to their share of the inheritance. But, they still have the opportunity to appeal the decision, so it's possible that some lesser settlement will be accepted by the Romanian government. Either way, it seems that the three Patriciu heirs will have to be the ones to clear out Dad's balance with Romania.

Fyre Festival Founder Involved In Ticket Scam While Awaiting Sentencing

Remember Billy McFarland? He's the 26-year-old who came up with the idea for the Fyre Festival. He promised aspirational millennials a life changing music festival on the beach in the Bahamas. He teamed up with rapper Ja Rule and set out to fund and promote his big idea. We all know what happened next. Festival goers who paid thousands – $4,000 to $250,000 for a group VIP experience – were left stranded with FEMA tents as accommodations, cheese sandwiches in styrofoam containers, no water, and a festival site rife with thieves, feral dogs, and violence. To add insult to injury, all the bands scheduled to appear bailed out before the festival started.

Maybe McFarland just had dreams that were bigger than his means and things got out of control. Nope. He was found to be leading a scheme selling fake tickets to high end events like the Grammy Awards and Met Gala WHILE he was awaiting sentencing for the wire fraud conviction related to the Fyre Festival.

Photo via Ian Moran/Wikimedia Commons

In March, McFarland pled guilty to two counts of wire fraud for bilking Fyre Festival investors and vendors out of about $26 million. He has been free on pretrial release while awaiting sentencing. Instead of contemplating all the things he did wrong, he decided to launch another scam. Now he's charged with an additional charge of wire fraud for selling fake tickets as well as a charge of money laundering.

NYC VIP Access claimed to buy and sell tickets to exclusive events including Super Bowl LI, Coachella, Burning Man, and a dinner with LeBron James. When customers bought the tickets, McFarland either did not provide the tickets as advertised or didn't provide the tickets at all. One couple from Florida bought tickets to the 2018 Grammy Awards for $700 each. They flew to New York City for the event and were turned away at the door with their fraudulent tickets. McFarland reportedly set the company's bank account up in an employee's name to hide his role in the company.

McFarland ran this scam from late 2017 until March. He scammed about 15 people out of $100,000 during this time.

He was arrested on these new charges and his bail has been revoked. A judge deemed him a flight risk and a nonviolent threat to the community. He is facing up to 40 years in prison from the Fyre Festival charges and has number of civil suits filed against him. He will be sentenced July 26th. His current plea deal calls for him to spend between eight and 10 years in prison.

Here's How The Suns Traded For A Draft Pick They Already Owned

$

Draft picks exchange hands in the NBA all the time. If a trade appears to be favoring one side, that team might throw in a future pick to even things out. Sometimes the trades have protection – it may need to fall outside the lottery to convert, for example – or maybe the pick won't happen until several years down the line. With picks moving constantly, it can be tough to keep up.

And sometimes, you just may trade for a pick you already owned.

During this year's NBA Draft, the Phoenix Suns traded Zhaire Smith (the 16th pick) and a future first-round pick in 2021 to the Philadelphia 76ers for Mikal Bridges (the 10th pick).

Getty Images

But to fully understand the comedy of that trade, let's jump back to the 2015 trade deadline. The 76ers traded Brandon Knight (a player they had just acquired in a trade with the Bucks earlier that day) to the Suns for a future Lakers draft pick. The Suns had obtained that pick when Steve Nash went to the Lakers during the 2012 offseason.

The Lakers pick had protections on it through 2017. Those protections were met each of the past three years, so it finally converted to the 76ers this year.

That same day the Suns traded Goran Dragic to the Miami Heat for two future first-rounders. One was an unprotected pick in 2021 while the other had protections on it in 2017, so it also converted this year.

That means the Suns essentially made a trade for a pick they already owned. They dealt Goran Dragic and two first-round picks – in the form of Smith and the upcoming Heat pick in 2021 – to secure a player (Bridges) drafted with the Lakers pick they dealt in 2015.

If Bridges turns out to be a superstar, Suns fans will forgive this poor asset management. But this is a franchise that sold its first-round draft pick on multiple occasions to avoid paying the luxury tax. It doesn't have a great track record.

Meanwhile, the Sixers made out like bandits, getting two first-round draft picks for Brandon Knight, who's played in just 117 games since that trade and is currently recovering from ACL surgery. The NBA sure is strange sometimes.

Dr. Dre And Jimmy Iovine Ordered To Pay Over $25M In Beats Lawsuit

Remember that lawsuit between Dr. Dre & Jimmy Iovine and designer Steven Lamar over the latter's headphone design for the Beats by Dre brand? Well, the verdict is in, and The Blast is reporting that the jury found in favor of Lamar, awarding him a whopping $25,247,350 in total damages stemming from unpaid royalties from sales of Beats headphones that were derived from Lamar's original design.

Iovine and Dre testified in court earlier this week that before their company was sold to Apple for $3 billion in 2016, their focus behind the scenes at Beats HQ was mostly on marketing and visual design aspects of the product, rather than on anything related to the tech that makes their headphones work. But the jury nevertheless found that the original agreement between Iovine & Dre and Lamar meant that he was owed a boatload of additional royalties (you can get the details on the lawsuit right here).

Interestingly, juries were given the opportunity to distribute damages for those unpaid royalties according to the brand's headphones. Court documents show a form was presented to jurors that asked exactly how much they thought Lamar was owed for each headphone model in question.

Neilson Barnard/Getty Images

The jury broke down the damages like this: $7,448,838 for the Studio 2/Remastered headphones, $14,856,721 for the Studio 2 Wireless headphones, and $2,941,791 for the Studio 3 headphones, which together is how the $25 million figure was reached. It's a lot of money, but it's actually only a fraction of the damages Lamar was seeking in court, having originally filed suit in 2016 after the company was acquired by Apple. He wanted more than $100 million in damages. Lamar's attorney Stephen E Morrissey had this to say about the decision:

"The jury really validated our theory of the case, that Mr. Lamar was involved in the founding of Beats… It's not everything we were asking for, but we're happy."

As for Dre and Iovine, they don't appear to have commented on the decision as of this writing, either for themselves or through an attorney.

K-Pop Band BTS Is The Biggest Thing In The World Right Now

$
0
0

K-Pop has been a thing for awhile now. Right now, BTS, a group of young men who were assembled into a band through a studio audition process are the biggest thing in the world. They are the modern day Beatles or Backstreet Boys, drawing tons of screaming young girls wherever they go. They debuted their unique sound in December 2012 with a rap cover of Wham's "Last Christmas." Since then, they've gone on to completely change the image of boy bands in South Korea and become the biggest breakout success that country has ever seen.

Over just the past year, BTS has wormed its way onto US radios and streaming services. They are the first South Korean band to debut an album at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard chart. The new album Love Yourself: Tear is a follow up to 2017's Love Yourself: Her and sold 135,000 albums in its first week of sales. The band also announced a world tour in April that sold out nearly instantly.

Why is it BTS that finally broke through after half a decade of the increasing popularity of K-Pop as a genre? Well, it's primarily about being different and change. BTS looks different than other K-Pop bands and the band took a different approach to building its fan base and interacting with fans.

Starnews/AFP/Getty Images

BTS is the brainchild of a man named Bang Si-hyuk, who set out to build a different kind of studio from the standard "idol factories" that had dominated the K-Pop landscape since the genre started in 1992. In 2005, Bang, a successful song writer, formed his own studio Big Hit Entertainment. He began to assemble a group of teenagers in 2010. He called them the Bulletproof Boy Scouts, later renamed Bangtan Boys, and finally, BTS. He wanted this band to be different from the painstakingly groomed and immaculate idols K-Pop usually churned out. He wanted BTS to be real young men who projected their real personalities and talents. This was a true break from the way things were usually done in the K-Pop world. Studios trained their bands to be idols who are blank slates that fans can project their fantasies on. Bang wanted BTS to be full of artists that audiences could relate to. Unlike other K-Pop artists, BTS doesn't have a strict contract or a curfew. They are allowed to discuss how stardom affects them and what pressure it puts on them.

What BTS does, and does well, is combine a young and innocent styling of the band members with driving beats more reminiscent of old school gangster rap. This was revolutionary in 2013. Today K-Pop regularly infuses tones of hip hop into its music, but BTS was among the first to take it and run with it.

And then there are the fans – called the Army – because their fandom is so well organized and loyal. Tickets for the 2015 limited U.S. tour sold out. Tickets were reportedly being scalped for more than $10,000. Tickets for their current sold out tour are averaging $452 per ticket—the highest of any act touring this summer.

Analysts of K-Pop were surprised by the rapid rise of BTS. But if you look at their reach, its less surprising. Kids know them. Teenagers know them. Adults know them. And their fans helped make sure that happened. During 2017, BTS fans begged Walmart, Target, and Amazon to stock BTS's albums. Once the retailers did, the fans gobbled them up, pushing BTS to the top of the sales charts.

Tumblr is generally considered the unofficial home for fan communities on the internet and BTS reigns supreme there. In April. Tumblr's popular weekly Fandom Metrics, which measure the popularity of fan communities, decided to stop breaking K-Pop out as a separate category. When they merged K-Pop with English language bands something interesting happened. The first week the categories were merged BTS was number one, ahead of Beyoncé and Harry Styles.

Think about it—BTS has grabbed the attention and loyalty of fans across the globe despite language and culture barriers. That's quite a feat right there and speaks to what a phenomenon BTS is globally right now.

The 76ers Made One Of The Best Trades Of The NBA Draft… They Just Had To Break A Hometown Hero's Heart

Philadelphia holds a special place in Mikal Bridges' heart. He played high school ball just outside the city, he won two NCAA titles with Villanova, and his mom works for the Philadelphia 76ers, serving as the VP of Human Resources. And for a brief moment, it looked like Bridges would continue being a hometown hero: the Sixers selected him with the 10th pick of the NBA Draft.

Unfortunately, Bridges quickly learned that business trumps any potential warm fuzzy feelings.

While he was still doing media interviews about joining the Sixers, news broke that the team had trade him to the Phoenix Suns for Zhaire Smith, the 16th pick in the draft. The Sixers also received a 2021 first-round pick.

Getty Images

As Sixers head coach and interim GM Brett Brown explained, Bridges was the team's first choice. However, Smith was 1B. He's certainly more of a gamble than Bridges, but his potential ceiling is higher, and Smith will fit in nicely with the 76ers' offense.

When the Suns added in the unprotected 2021 pick, which initially belonged to Miami, the deal was too good to pass up. So, 2021 is looking like the year when high school players will once again be allowed to jump to the NBA, essentially doubling the league's draft class.

Of course, the Sixers may not hold onto the pick for long. They're looking to contend for a championship, and the Heat could be among the worst teams in the NBA three years from now, making the pick a huge bargaining chip.

The Sixers want to recruit another star to play alongside Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. That pick may come in handy for landing, say, Kawhi Leonard or Paul George in a sign-and-trade.

For Bridges, he joins a rebuilding project with the Phoenix Suns. And while he won't get to play in front of his hometown fans every night, he should still see solid minutes on an exciting young roster.

And let's not forget–it's still pretty cool to make it to the NBA, regardless of where you end up.

Jared Polis Is One Of The Richest Politicians In America – And He Could Become The First Gay Governor

In 2008, Jared Polis won the race for Congress in Colorado's 2nd Congressional District. At the time he was one of the few openly gay people elected to the House as a freshman politician, and the first openly gay parent in Congress. He's also worth a reported $200 million, making him one of the 10 richest members of Congress. Now, he's running for governor of Colorado after winning the Democratic Primary by beating three challengers. If he wins, he will be the first known openly gay governor in the United States. Polis is a liberal who ran on the promises of protecting residents of Colorado from efforts to end the Affordable Care Act and reiterated a pledge to create free preschool and kindergarten for all children in Colorado.

How He Got There
Polis, a five term congressman is also an entrepreneur who earned his fortune when he co-founded Internet access provider American Information Systems (AIS) while still in college. That company sold in 1998.

In 1996, he co-founded online greeting card website Bluemountain.com, which sold to Excite@Home in 1999 at the height of the dot-com bubble for $430 million in stock and $350 million in cash. In 1998, Polis founded online florist ProFlowers. The company, later renamed Provide Commerce, went public on NASDAQ as PRVD on December 17, 2003. In 2005, Provide Commerce was acquired by media conglomerate Liberty Media Corporation for $477 million. It's probably no surprise to learn that Polis was once named "Entrepreneur of the Year" by Ernst and Young.

Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

Younger Years
Polis was born on May 12, 1975 in Boulder. He studied political science at Princeton, and his political career kicked off when he was elected to the Colorado State Board of Education. Close to 1.6 million votes were cast between Polis and his opponent, and he won that election by a margin of only 90 votes. He founded the Jared Polis Foundation the same year. The Foundation is dedicated to improving teacher resource support with regard to technology and community engagement. Gaining popularity over time, Polis was elected to the House of Representatives in Colorado in 2008, and re-elected in 2010.

The Detractors
Like any politician, Polis has his detractors. Despite his millions, he's been ridiculed for his fashion sense in the media, with GQwriting a piece tearing apart his choice of bowties over turtlenecks (yikes), to cite just one of his many fashion offenses. Gawker wrote an article called "Jared Polis: To Know Him Is To Loathe Him," accusing him of buying his way into politics. He wouldn't be the first.

Polis is also an avid gamer (or "gaymer" as his Twitter bio says) who plays League of Legends. He was the first member of Congress to accept bitcoin donations on the day it became legal, and an advocate for legalizing marijuana. He does, after all, represent Colorado. You can find him on Twitter, tweeting about Justin Bieber, Vail town hall meetings, and fracking.

His investment portfolio is apparently just as diverse: real estate in Japanese retirement housing, stock in businesses like an open-sea fish farm off the Panama coast, and a film production company based in Denver. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

If he wins the election in November, Polis will make history once again.
