The Five Best And Five Worst Free-Agent Signings This NBA Off-season So Far

With "sources" shadowing and tweeting a player's every move, the NBA really has become a year-round league. The saga of where LeBron James would sign; the tale of whether Carmelo Anthony would be chasing rings instead of money; the epic back-and-forth between Marcin Gortat and the Wizards… Okay, maybe that last one is a little far-fetched, but the point remains: NBA free agency is just as jam-packed as the actual season. And with all the trades and rumors flying back and forth, it's quite easy to miss a player switching teams. But, don't worry, we've got you covered. Here's a look at five of the best, and five of the worst free agent signings so far this off season. We'll analyze both in terms of fit and contract…

lebron-dirk-big

The Five Best Signings:

LeBron James: Cleveland Cavaliers, 2 years, $41 million
Anytime you can sign the best player in the league, it's probably a good idea to do so. The Cavs did just that, when LeBron announced he was coming home in a letter posted on Sports Illustrated. Of course, as a savvy businessman, LeBron structured his contract in a way that it'll expire before both the league's new television deal and collective bargaining agreements begin. In other words, after the two years are up, he'll be able to re-sign in Cleveland for more than he would have if he took the maximum over four years now. Or, if he wants to just become the world's biggest villain, he can leave after the two years–or even one, since this deal has an option to opt out after the 2014-15 season. In the meantime, Cleveland fans will be researching how to unburn a jersey.

Pau Gasol: Chicago Bulls, 3 years, $22 million
Bulls fans worldwide rejoiced at the news of the former Laker coming over to Chicago. Not necessarily because Pau is a major upgrade at power forward (which he is), but because it finally meant the Bulls could amnesty Carlos Boozer, who's due $16.8 million next year. Even though the Bulls will have to pay a chunk of that, it won't count against the salary cap. To be able to bring in Gasol, a terrific passer and someone who actually gives effort on defense besides yelling at a teammate to grab a rebound, is a big move for the franchise. Coupled with incumbent Taj Gibson and fellow Spaniard Nikola Mirotic, the Bulls are stacked at the 4-spot, with each player bringing something unique to the table.

Kyle Lowry: Toronto Raptors, 4 years, $48 million
Sometimes a player just perfectly fits a system. Kyle Lowry and the Raptors are one such perfect fit. Lowry had bounced around the league a bit, clashing with coaches and teammates before finally landing north of the border. He had the best season of his career last year, averaging about 18 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists a game, leading the Raptors to their highest playoff-seed ever. While there were talks of him getting max money elsewhere, it was in the Raptors best interest to keep their starting point guard. What's more, they were able to do it without panicking, offering a very fair $12 million a year.

Dirk Nowitzki: Dallas Mavericks, 3 years, $25 million
Taking a page from Tim Duncan's "Hey, I've made enough money for several lifetimes, I'm comfortable taking a paycut if it gives us a shot to win a championship or two before I retire" playbook, Nowitzki turned down max offers from both the Rockets and the Lakers to re-sign with the only team he's ever known. Of course, he's still a great player himself, finishing 12th in the NBA in PER last year. It's a bit of a monetary sacrifice on his part, sure, but at this stage of his career (he's already 36 years old), Nowitzki only has his sights set on adding a second championship to his mantle. Assuming he has a mantle at home where he keeps his trophies and ring. In any case, taking less money means the Mavs had a bit more wiggle room this off-season, and they were able to pry Chandler Parsons away from divisional rival Houston. That's the kind of teamwork that makes the dream work.

Patty Mills: San Antonio Spurs, 3 years, $12 million
Mills opted out of his contract after this past season, only to return home to the Spurs with a three-year deal. Like Lowry, Mills is another guy that fits his system incredibly well. As an energy guy off the bench, Mills will stay play meaningful minutes under the tutelage of the best coach in the game. The best part? By the time this contract is up, he'll only be 28 years old–if he keeps improving at the rate he's been showing, he can still snag a hefty contract from someone willing to reward him handsomely the next time he's a free agent. Because if NBA owners love anything, it's overpaying for players.

gordon

The Five Worst:
NBA teams sure do love to spend a lot of money. Heck, that's a big reason why there was nearly a lockout during the 2011-12 season–owners were upset over money they were losing when tossing out ill-advised contracts left and right. Of course, it's hard to change overnight, and teams still dole out big contracts for players that probably don't deserve them. Luckily, we've got you covered in case you blinked and missed a big deal. Here are the five worst contracts from this NBA offseason.

Gordon Hayward: Utah Jazz, 4 years, $63 million

Let's start off by saying that Gordon Hayward isn't a bad player. He's part of a small group of players who have ever averaged 16 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in a season, and he's done that on a Utah Jazz team that is pretty bereft of playmakers. Of course, that's part of the problem. It was going to take a big contract to convince Hayward to keep around, and the Charlotte Bobcats made things worse by throwing this big offer at Hayward, who was a restricted free agent this offseason. Not wanting to let one of their young players walk for nothing, the Jazz were forced to match. Hayward may prove to be worth it in the end, but for now this looks like a massive overspend. Here's hoping he's practicing his halfcourt shots, too.

Jordan Hill: Los Angeles Lakers, 2 years, $18 million

Deals like this make it seem like Los Angeles doesn't know what its gameplan is. Sure, Kobe Bryant's massive contract eats up most of the Lakers cap space, making it difficult to lure star players without said star taking a paycut. But just because they whiffed on Melo, throwing $9 million/year at Jordan Hill is not the solution. Hill's WAR last year was -0.9, meaning that if you replaced with him with a league average player, the Lakers actually would have been one game better. And with recent news that L.A. just signed Carlos Boozer to a one-year deal, the Lakers' plan is even more of a head-scratcher.

Trevor Ariza: Houston Rockets, 4 years, $32 million

Technically, this was a sign-and-trade deal, but it seemed like Ariza leaving Washington was an inevitability. This one is baffling for a couple of different reasons: for one, Ariza mentioned how much his Wizard teammates had come to be like brothers, yet he apparently turned down this same contract offer from Washington. This also seems like a panic move on Houston's part. After whiffing on Chris Bosh, losing Chandler Parsons to the in-state rival Mavs, and giving away Jeremy Lin for nothing, Houston probably felt like they needed to do something during free agency. Since this was a trade, they also lost one of their twin defensive towers in Omer Asik. In the long run, it seems like the Rockets got a lot worse this offseason, and Ariza, who did play well last season but only has a career average of 9.7 points a game on 43% shooting, is not the greatest consolation prize.

Jodie Meeks: Detroit Pistons, 3 years, $19 million

The Pistons haven't made the playoffs since 2009, and it's largely thanks in part to dishing out curious contracts like this one, which will pay Jodie Meeks over $6 million a year. Meeks isn't the worst player in the league by any stretch of the imagination, but he's still an undersized shooter who broke 40% from long range for the first time last season, his fifth. What's equally perplexing is that the Pistons offered this contract incredibly early during the free agent process. Meeks likely would have signed (even with Detroit) for a lot less. But hey, if Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings are still around next season, Meeks' shooting will look incredible, and this'll seem like a good bargain.

Marvin Williams: Charlotte Hornets, 2 years, $14 million

This contract reeks of what both the Hawks and the Jazz have hoped for in the past–that Williams will realize his enormous potential. After all, he was drafted in 2005 by Atlanta, ahead of more proven college performers like Chris Paul and Deron Williams. But Marvin has never averaged 15+ points a game in his career, and he's also never appeared in all 82 games in a season. Charlotte is probably overreaching with the dollar amount here, but on the bright side, this contract is short enough that the Hornets aren't hamstringing their long-term cap space if things don't pan out.

10 Years Ago Rory McIlroy's Dad Placed A $200 Bet That His Son Would Win The British Open Before He Turned 26… Awesome Story.

Earlier today, Irish golfer Rory McIlroy won the British Open. He is now the third youngest person to ever win the British Open, behind Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods who won the tournament at 24 and 24, respectively. With the win, Rory walks away with a $1.66 million dollar purse. That brings his total career earnings so far to a tad under $33 million dollars. And it turns out that Rory isn't the only McIlroy who is smiling and making bank today.

10 years ago, when Rory was just 15, his father Gerry McIlroy placed a £200 pound wager that his son would win the British Open before his 26th birthday. At the time, Rory was a teenage golf prodigy who was still three years away from turning professional. Three of Gerry's friends went in on the wager, bringing the total bet up £400 pounds (roughly $683 USD). The bet was so far fetched that the bookie who took the other side gave it the biggest odds allowable at the establishment.

As we mentioned in the first paragraph, Rory just won the British Open. He is 25 years old.

GOLF-GBR-OPEN

So not only is Rory taking home $1.66 million dollars, thanks to the win today, Gerry McIlroy and those three true-believer friends will be splitting $342,000 from their decade-old bet. Just to repeat. That's $342,000 from a $680 bet (USD). Somewhere in Belfast, Ireland (the McIlroy's hometown) there is a bookie who is probably drowning his sorrows in a lot of Guinness and Jameson. Here is a photo of Rory and his parents with the trophy, followed by a screenshot of a tweet sent out by a reporter who was able to confirm that the bet happened and is still valid:

Rory, Rosie and Gerry McIlroy

And even though his son is one of the highest paid athletes in the world (with a personal net worth of $50 million dollars and a 10-year $75 million dollar Nike contract) $341,000 won't go unappreciated by Rory's parents. Both parents had to hold down multiple jobs in order to support Rory's early golf years. At the time he placed the bet, the elder McIlroy was working 100 hours a week as a bartender. In 2009, Gerry reflected on those early years:

"From 12pm to 6pm I was a bartender at Holywood Golf Club, then, after going home for tea, I'd return to the sports club from 7pm-midnight to work behind the bar. I am a working-class man and that's all I knew – to get the money we needed for Rory to be able to learn and compete at golf."

Those days are long gone but winning this bet still is obviously very special. TO thank his parents for their sacrifices, Rory recently bought them a nice little mansion in the suburbs. In Rory's own words:

"I'll never be able to repay Mum and Dad for what they did, but at least they know they'll never have to work another day. I'll do whatever it takes to look after them."

Oh, and in case you were wondering, Tiger Woods finished in 69th place (he he he). Not kidding.

The Biggest Pop Star in Japan Right Now Is A Hologram. A Hologram Who Sells Out Stadiums Full Of Real People.

When it comes to weird inventions, Japan seems to have cornered the market.  In fact, they even have an entire category of products known as Chindogu, or products invented just to see how wacky the creators could be.  Japan is a leader in product research, so even when the inventions are completely bizarre (floor-dusting baby onesie, anyone?), they do actually seem to serve a purpose.  One of the more interesting inventions to come out of Japan in recent years, is the Hatsune Miku voice synthesizer created by Crypton Future Media.  Originally created simply to act as a synthesizer, Hatsune Miku has grown into a world-wide holographic phenomenon, with millions of fans.  During its first year, in 2007, it became the #1 selling software in Japan, and racked up sales of 57.5 million yen (approx. $600,000) in that year alone.  A true "cyber celebrity", possibly the first of its kind, Hatsune Miku has become one of Japan's most successful inventions, and a cottage industry unlike any other.

Hatsune Miku

Hatsune Miku

First released in 2007, Hatsune Miku was created using Yamaha's Vocaloid 2 and Vocaloid 3 programs. The designers used multiple voice samples from Saki Fujita, a popular Japanese voice over artist.  They chose their samples very carefully, so that each sample had a Japanese or English phonic.  When the phonics were combined, they could create words, phrases, and song lyrics.  All of the samples became the sonic foundation for a keyboard type instrument, and pitch could be altered through the synthesizer program.  The company chose the name Hatsune Miku because the name merges the Japanese characters for "first", "sound", and "future" – signifying "first sound from the future".

In the past, Vocaloid programs had gone the sonic route only.  It was a huge departure to create a visual representation of the Vocaloid program.  Crypton Future Media was uncertain if it would have an impact on sales, but they decided to go for it anyway.  In order to market the program, Crypton created an "android diva" persona with a backstory about a near-future world where songs had been lost.  They turned to popular manga artist, Kei Garo, to create a visual that would appeal to the audience of professional producers at which the program was aimed.  He was given two guidelines – the coloring used had to be the colors of the synthesizer program, and she had to be an android.  He came up with a slim figure in a futuristic school-girl outfit with long turquoise pigtails.  The character has her own profile.  She's a 5-foot, 92-pound, sixteen year old girl, born on August 31st.  Her favorite musical genres are listed as Japanese Pop (J-Pop) and Dance Pop.  As she is a musical construct, the company also lists her favorite tempos as anywhere from 70 – 150 BPM and her vocal range from A3 to E5. Check her out in concert:

While Yamaha provided the framework on which the program was built, they have only been involved in marketing the program and cyber figure peripherally.  Instead, most of the marketing has fallen to the development teams for Vocaloid, and her popularity has outpaced their wildest expectations.  The entire Vocaloid phenomenon, of which Hatsune Miku is just one example, has become incredibly lucrative.  Crypton Future Media is at the forefront of Vocaloid promotion, and the company has collaborated with a number of famous brands.  Hatsune Miku has been part of a major marketing campaign with the GT300 since 2008.  Crypton and Good Smile Racing have sponsored multiple racing teams, as well.  Along with a number of other Vocaloid characters, who make up the Character Vocal Series, Hatsune Miku artwork has appeared on race cars for Studie, Team MOLA, and Team COX.  In addition to endorsing cars, the Hatsune Miku image has been used to promote the Toyota Corolla and in promotions for Sapporo, SEGA, and Google Chrome.

What has driven her popularity more than anything, has been user response.  When the program was first released, Crypton actually couldn't keep up with demand.  They had a waiting list of 3,000 by the 12th day that the program was on sale back in 2007.  After the program was first released, producers began posting short multi-media videos of songs they'd created using the program to Nico Nico Douga, the Japanese equivalent of YouTube.  Soon Nico Nico Douga users began collaborating, creating original music videos and other content featuring Hatsune Miku's image.  Her popularity grew so much, that a petition was created to send her image into space.  It ended up receiving 14,000 signatures, and on May 21, 2010, three aluminum plates featuring her image were launched into space on the Akatsuki spacecraft explorer.  To date, there have been over 1 million images of her created by fans.  Over 170,000 videos featuring her image have been uploaded to YouTube, and 100,000 songs featuring her have been released.  She has nearly 1,000,000 fans on Facebook.

hot

In 2013, Crypton released an English-language version of the software, and her popularity increased exponentially.  The growth of user created content was spurred by Crypton's decision to adapt "Creative Commons License CC BY-NY", so that it became legal for users to create as much original content, using her original image, as they wanted.  She is viewed as her own musical entity, and has released albums and singles as a music artist.  Her album, "Exit Tunes Presents Vocalgenesis feat. Hatsune Miku", became the first Vocaloid album to chart at #1 back in 2010.  She has since gone on to perform sold-out live concerts in Asia and the United States, including a gig at Los Angeles' Nokia Theater in 2011.  She was the star of a Vocaloid opera called, "The End", that only used Vocaloid performers.  Written by Keiichiro Shibuya, and designed by famed artist, Louis Vuitton, the opera premiered at the Chatelet Opera House in late 2013 to surprisingly strong reviews.  Since then, she has also opened for Lady Gaga's "ArtRave: The Artpop Ball" tour, and been featured in Pharrell Williams' remix of "Last night, Good night" by Livetune.

No one quite knows how far the Hatsune Miku phenomenon will go.  There's been nothing like it before.  Her community of fans and followers just keeps growing and growing.  She is definitely one of the most successful inventions to come out of Japan in years.  Her live concerts are both stunning to look at and genuinely eerie.  She's a hologram and her vocals are being played on a keyboard, but for a couple of hours, to a couple thousand people, she is as real as you or I.  If that's not a totally futuristic concept, it's tough to know what is.
