Richard Branson Says The 9 To 5 Workday's Days Are Numbered

One of the most favored pastimes of billionaire entrepreneurs is making predictions about the future, especially when they relate to the worlds of business or the economy. Virgin founder Richard Branson took to his personal blog to make just such a prediction, and it may be a comforting one for those stuck in overbearing office jobs. He writes that the five day, nine-to-five work schedule that feel so inescapable won't be around for too much longer. As he puts it:

"The idea of working five days a week with two day weekends and a few weeks of holiday each year has become ingrained in society. But it wasn't always the case, and it won't be in the future."

Branson's reasoning in this prediction isn't knew, and involves our old friend automation. As computers and machines get more and more adept at jobs that used to be held by humans, fewer and fewer jobs will need to be held by people. He goes on:

"Ideas such as driverless cars and more advanced drones are becoming a reality, and machines will be used for more and more jobs in the future. Even pilot-less planes will be become the reality in the not too distant future."

Lisa Maree Williams/Getty Images

Branson is aware that most people aren't billionaires and the prospect of being put on permanent vacation by a robot isn't exactly a happy one. But he says that as long as "governments and businesses are clever, the advance of technology could actually be really positive for people all over the world," and that those same governments and businesses will have ample incentive for keeping people's income the same, even if they're working less:

"Could people eventually take three and even four day weekends? Certainly. Will job-sharing increase? I think so."

Branson's vision of work in the future looks a lot like his own personal approach to work, which isn't tied to a particular location or schedule:

"I'm lucky in being able to work wherever I am, at any time, and don't see work and play as separate – it's all living… I think this will be the case for more and more people in the future, to the benefit of businesses, countries and individuals."

Hopefully for all of us, Branson's surprisingly sunny outlook will be proven closer to accurate than not in the future.

Mike Piazza And His Wife Helped Bankrupt An Italian Soccer Club

After a productive career as a catcher in Major League Baseball, Mike Piazza had to consider what came next after retirement. Like many pro athletes, Piazza turned toward business. However, he focused on a different sport: soccer. Ultimately, his time with soccer was a lot less successful than his baseball career.

Piazza acquired soccer club A.C. Reggiana 1919 in 2016. And yes, like the name suggests, it was founded nearly a full century ago. However, Piazza quickly led the club into financial woes.

When Piazza took a controlling stake, the club's budget was about $568,000. In just one season, that budget spiked to $6.8 million.

Naturally, Piazza's wife didn't take too kindly to the budget troubles.

Rich Schultz/Getty Images

Her reaction when she saw everything laid out in front of her: "I turned to Mike and said, 'What the f— did you just do?!'"

Alicia Piazza took over as the club's vice president to try and reduce costs. One managerial candidate accepted an offer, but then turned it down after Piazza tried to offer more than $17,000 less than what they initially agreed upon.

In two seasons, Reggiana was unable to climb out of Serie C, the lowest division of Italian soccer. The Piazzas then put the club up for sale.

But nobody wanted to purchase the club, and the Piazza family decided not to register Reggiana for the 2018-19 season.

Reggiana ended up folding, but the tradition of the club lives on – Reggio Audace F.C. rose from the ashes. The new club plays in Serie D, one level below where Reggiana used to play.

We just hope Reggio is smarter with its finances.

E-cigarette Company Juul Is Giving Its Employees Enormous Bonuses

Juul, the popular e-cigarette company that seems to be everywhere lately is doing its employees a solid when it comes to bonuses this holiday season. The company's 1,500 employees are getting a $2 billion bonus from Altria. That works out to about $1.3 million each. Where is that money coming from? Tobacco giant Altria is making a $12.8 billion investment in Juul and the company is using $2 billion of that to make its employees' holidays just that much brighter.

The deal was announced on Thursday, December 20th and will be paid out as a special dividend as part of the deal. How much each employee gets is based on a number of factors, including how long they've been with Juul and how much stock they own. Juul is receiving the lump sum payout as part of the deal and as such decided to share it with its staff.

Scott Olson/Getty Images

Sales of Juul e-cigarettes increased 641% over the course of one year. In 2016, 2.2 million devices were sold. In 2017, 16.2 million devices were sold. By December 2017, Juul was selling 3.2 million devices monthly and accounted for 1 in every 3, or 29% of e-cigarette sales in the United States. E-cigarette use has been on the rise over the past several years, especially among teenagers and young adults. According to the FDA, more than two million middle and high school students used e-cigarettes last year.

Altria is the parent company of Philip Morris, one of the world's largest producers and marketers of tobacco, cigarettes and related products. Altria's $12.8 billion investment gives it a 35% stake and values Juul at $38 billion.

The 12 Richest Celebrities In The World Right Now

The end of the year means the lists of the highest-paid and wealthiest people are being compiled. We've checked our numbers, verified them, and feel confident that the people who've made the list of the wealthiest celebrities of the year truly are the people who have the most money. Star Wars creator George Lucas tops the list of the wealthiest celebrities this year, and this warms our cold hearts. He continues to enjoy the bump to his net worth that the 2012 sale of Lucasfilm to Disney for $4.1 billion. Lucas edges out long time friend, fellow filmmaker, and competitor Steven Spielberg.

Familiar names make the list for well known reasons. Oprah Winfrey is a mainstay on the list of the richest celebrities and she clocks in at third place this year. Michael Jordan nabs the fifth spot thanks to the cash he nets from his Nike deal and his stake in the NBA's Charlotte Hornets. In between them is Less Than Zero actress Jami Gertz and her $2 billion net worth. Gertz' acting career has spanned more than 30 years with memorable roles in Sixteen Candles, The Lost Boys, and the TV show Square Pegs. Jami married billionaire Antony Ressler, the co-founder of the $40 billion private equity firm Ares Management in 1989. Gertz and Ressler have three sons and are part owners of the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team.

Notably, you will NOT find Kylie Jenner on our list, for reasons we've stated before but will recap. Jenner is doing remarkably well for herself but any publication that says she is a billionaire or has a net worth of $900 million is simply pulling that number out of thin air to sell magazines and get eyeballs on their web pages. Here's why: A July 2018 Forbes article claimed that the company is worth $800 million. The article also claimed that Kylie has a separate $100 million non-cosmetic fortune so voila $900 million net worth. But one thing to keep in mind about the Forbes article is that they are assuming the company would sell for roughly 8x its current profits. That's an extremely high multiple, especially when you take into account the fact that (as the article itself points out) Kylie Cosmetics' revenues are not growing. In fact, overall revenue grew just 7% in 2017 and was $70 million lower than had been predicted in mid-2017. Furthermore, her lip-kit revenue is actually down 35%, year over year. No company would pay an 8x multiple for a brand that is clearly waning in popularity. Let's say Kylie was able to sell for 4x profits, that would be around $400 million. As the 100% owner she would get around $260 million after taxes from that sale. Therefore, we think a much more reality-based net worth number for Kylie today is $300 million.

Seven NFL Incentives That Players Earned – And Missed – In The Final Week Of The Season

$
0
0

The NFL season just wrapped up on Sunday, and there was plenty of excitement to go around. Teams like the Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, and Philadelphia Eagles all clinched a spot in the postseason. The Kansas City Chiefs locked up home-field advantage in the AFC. While these developments are interesting, we're most excited about player incentives.

Several players have performance bonuses in their contracts. These bonuses give them a chance to earn more money than their base salary. Sometimes, the bonuses are basic: play a certain number of snaps in a season; other times, they're more specific: win the Super Bowl.

In some cases, players didn't reach their goal until the final week. As we say goodbye to the 2018 regular season, let's take a look at some last-minute bonuses – and a handful of players who came agonizingly close, but fell short.

Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images

Eric Weddle

The Ravens safety made $1 million when his teammate C.J. Mosely intercepted a pass in the final minute of the team's 26-24 win over the Cleveland Browns. Weddle needed to make the Pro Bowl and the playoffs for the bonus to kick in. He had a similar opportunity last year, but the Ravens lost in the final minute. Things were different this time around – and Weddle is grateful. He's announced he's going to share his bonus with his teammates and other Ravens staff, so expect to see something cool coming out of Baltimore in the coming days.

Keenan Allen

The Chargers receiver tore his ACL at the start of the 2016 season. That injury put a damper on a potential $2 million incentive (which would increase Allen's 2020 base salary to $10.5 million). To reach that bonus, Allen needed at least 90 or more catches and a Chargers playoff berth or 100 catches and at least eight team wins between 2016 and 2018. Allen snagged 102 catches and the Chargers won nine games last year. This season, he caught 97 passes and the Bolts made the playoffs. Well done!

Jason Pierre-Paul

To most observers, the Week 17 matchup between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons was pretty meaningless. Both teams were eliminated from the playoffs, so they were just playing out the string. Don't tell that to Jason Pierre-Paul, though. Tampa Bay's defensive end recorded a sack, giving him 12.5 for the season. That gives him an extra $200,000, which will be added to his base salary next year.

Adam Glanzman/Getty Images

Dont'a Hightower

Hightower hit some of his bonuses, but ultimately could have made even more. The Patriots linebacker made $625,000 for playing at least 70 percent of the team's snaps. If he reached 75 percent, he'd have earned another $250,000. Instead, he finished with 74.21 percent of snaps played.

Danielle Hunter

The Vikings defensive end signed a five-year, $72 million extension ($40 million guaranteed) last summer, but he's easily outperforming his contract. He made $500,000 when he recorded his 13th sack this season, which was a nice bonus. However, he just missed another $500,000 when he failed to record half a sack in the team's final two games, finishing with 14.5 on the year.

Julian Edelman

The Patriots wide receiver needed just one catch to reach his 70-reception incentive bonus, but he only scored one of two touchdowns he needed to reach seven on the year. As a result, he'll just miss out on $500,000.

Will Newton/Getty Images

Nick Foles

The Eagles quarterback led the team to Super Bowl glory last season. After Carson Wentz again went down with an injury this year, Foles was back under center. Foles would make $1 million if the Eagles made the postseason and he played 33 percent of snaps during the year. Though the Eagles were longshots to make the playoffs a month ago, Foles helped lead the team back to the postseason. However, he hurt his ribs during the team's Week 17 game and ultimately finished at 32 percent of the team's snaps. Ouch – in more ways than one.

Floyd Mayweather Makes An Easy $9 Million For Defeating Tenshin Nasukawa In Two Minutes

$

0

Floyd "Money" Mayweather has earned his famous nickname once again for pulling in a $9 million paycheck for a little more than two minutes of work. It happened at Rizin 14, a boxing exhibition in Japan on New Year's Eve, in a fight against 20-year-old Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa.

The Mayweather/Nasukawa fight was scheduled to be up to three rounds under boxing rules, but Mayweather only required one to take Nasukawa out. Less than one, actually, since with 48 seconds left to go in the first Nasukawa's manager saw the writing on the wall and threw in the towel, pulling his fighter out of a match in which he was clearly outweighed, outmatched, and outfought by the more experienced and seemingly more powerful Mayweather.

TOSHIFUMI KITAMURA/AFP/Getty Images

Nasukawa was a heavy underdog in the fight, which wasn't even listed by any organization as an official bout. But Nasukawa is reported to have taken the fight seriously and seemed to be surprised by Mayweather's power in the ring. Because of the fight's unofficial status, Nasukawa is still technically undefeated, and afterwards Nasukawa took to Instagram to issue his thoughts (via Google Translate from Japanese, which is why it seems a bit wonky):

"It was a challenge to fight with being said to be reckless
Although the result has been knocked down
I do not regret it
I did not reach Mayweather at my own 20 years.
But I came out with courage.
Thank you very much, Mayweather players who fought.
Thank you very much for everyone who supported me.
I could not shape your thoughts, but I will continue to challenge from now on
Everyone, thank you again this year."

Most interestingly for our purposes here, if you take the two minutes and 12 seconds it took for the fight to be finished and break it down to 132 seconds, Mayweather made an even more impressive $68,181 PER SECOND for the fight – a lot of money even by Mayweather's standards.
