Troy Tulowitzki Is Just The Latest Player Getting Money Not To Play For His Team

$
0
0

Troy Tulowitzki is a five-time All-Star and has won two Silver Sluggers and Gold Gloves apiece. But those awards were a long time ago, and the Toronto Blue Jays know that. In fact, thanks to surgeries on both feet, Tulowitzki hasn't played since July 28, 2017.

With his health a concern, the Blue Jays released Tulowitzki earlier this month, ending his tenure with the team after three and a half years.

It's the same old story for Tulowitzki. He's missed 545 out of a possible 1,134 games since 2012. Playing in just 52 percent of games is a good way to get released.

But it's not all doom and gloom for Tulowitzki. The Blue Jays still owe him $38 million over the next two seasons. He's due $20 million in 2019, $14 million in 2020, and has a $4 million buyout of his club option for 2021.

That means the Blue Jays are paying Tulowitzki not to play for him. He's hardly alone, though. Here are nine other athletes who have received money – and in some cases, are STILL receiving money – from their former teams to just quit playing.

Brandon Wade/Getty Images

Josh Hamilton, Los Angeles Angels – $68 Million

Hamilton was, at one point, a tremendous comeback story. He overcame addictions to drugs and alcohol en route to the 2010 American League MVP award and five straight All-Star appearances. The Angels offered Hamilton a five-year, $125 million deal to come to Los Angeles. Hamilton's numbers dipped in the City of Angels, though – he finished with a then-career low in batting average while his power numbers diminished. The Angels traded Hamilton back to the Rangers just two years into the deal, and gave the Rangers $68 million just to take the outfielder off their hands.

Gilbert Arenas, Orlando Magic – $63 Million

Arenas was an All-Star for the Wizards, but things quickly turned south after a locker room scuffle between him and teammate Javaris Crittenton. Both players brought guns into the locker room and both players were arrested for the rest of the season. Arenas was never the same player on the court again. The Wizards traded Arenas to the Orlando Magic the following season. After just 49 games, the Magic amnestied Arenas, paying him $62 million from 2011 to 2016.

Michael Finley, Dallas Mavericks – $51.8 Million

Nowadays, it's more common to see the NBA amnesty's provision in action. A player will still receive the money he's owed from his contract, but his salary doesn't count against the cap. When Michael Finley was playing, though, the amnesty provision didn't yet exist. Finley averaged nearly 20 points per game over nine years, but Mavericks owner Mark Cuban didn't want to risk paying the luxury tax because of his expensive salary. He cut Finley, who was still owed $51.8 million, and paid that sum out over ten years.

Pablo Sandoval, Boston Red Sox – $48.6 Million

Sandoval signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants in 2017. This was after he inked a five-year deal with the Red Sox in 2015. Astute mathletes may notice Sandoval didn't spend five years in Boston – but the Red Sox paid him for five years anyway. Sandoval made the rest of his Red Sox salary plus a $5 million buyout to go play for another team.

Stephen Dunn/Getty Images

Josh Smith, Detroit Pistons – $36 Million

Josh Smith had a propensity for hoisting up long two-pointers, statistically one of the worst shots you can take in a basketball game. But in 2013, we weren't nearly as advanced in analytics as we are today, so you'll forgive the Pistons for signing Smith to a deal that summer. He played just over one full season in Detroit, and the team released him with about three years left on the contract. His $36 million remaining of his salary is still being paid; Smith will receive his final payment in 2020.

Steve Francis, Portland Trail Blazers – $30 Million

The New York Knicks acquired Francis in a trade during the 2005-06 season, but dreams of him bringing the franchise back to prominence quickly faded. He played in only 68 games over the course of two seasons before the Knicks dealt him to Portland. The Blazers almost immediately bought out his contract, which cost them $30 million.

Prince Fielder, Detroit Tigers – $30 Million

Fielder underwent multiple neck surgeries, which ultimately ended his career. But before all that, the Detroit Tigers offered an extra $30 million to the Rangers in a trade that sent Fielder to Texas. The Rangers still owed Fielder $138 million over seven years, but that's better than owning him $168 million, right?

Carmelo Anthony, Atlanta Hawks – $25.5 Million

Of all the people on this list, Carmelo Anthony was the most efficient at earning his money. The Oklahoma City Thunder traded Anthony to the Atlanta Hawks just one season after trading for the 10-time All-Star. The Hawks, who only made the trade to dump salary, quickly bought out Anthony's contract. In total, Anthony spent just five days on the Hawks roster, making more than $5 million per day during his brief stay.

Bobby Bonilla, New York Mets – $29.8 Million

Ah, we've saved our favorite for last. Every July 1, we celebrate Bobby Bonilla Day. Bonilla hasn't played professional baseball since 2001. But thanks to a truly terrible contract structure from the New York Mets, Bonilla has made nearly $1.2 million every year since 2011. That payment will continue annually until 2035, giving Bonilla just under $30 million for a season in which he didn't even play for the Mets.

How A Simple Christmas Gift Helped Harper Lee Write One Of The Most Profitable Books Of All Time

Christmas is right around the corner, so it's time to start brainstorming all the gifts you need to buy for friends and family. Perhaps more importantly, it's time to start brainstorming what you want to receive from those same friends and family on the morning of December 25th! But before you go and ask for the standard iPad, PlayStation, Beats by Dre, smartphone etc… try to think a little bigger this year. And I don't mean "bigger" in terms of size or price. I mean bigger in terms of potential to change your life. What am I talking about? Well, as you're about to see, even one simple Christmas gift has the power to make you unimaginably wealthy for the rest of your life. Don't believe me? Just ask "To Kill A Mockingbird" author Harper Lee.

Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama. Her father Amasa Coleman Lee (A.C.) was a lawyer, newspaper editor and eventually a 12 year member of the Alabama House of Representatives. Early in his career as a lawyer, A.C. Lee defended two black men, father and son, who were accused of murdering a white storekeeper. A.C. lost the case and both men were hanged. Remnants of this event would eventually make their way into To Kill A Mockingbird (TKAM).

After earning a degree in English Literature from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, Harper Lee briefly attended law school at the University of Alabama but dropped out after two years to focus full time on writing. At the encouragement of her childhood best friend, Truman Capote, she soon began submitting stories to a literary agent in New York City named Maurice Crain. Crain encouraged the 30 year old to move to Manhattan to see what might develop.

While staying in New York City, Harper lived with the famous Broadway lyricist Michael Brown and his ballet dancer wife Joy Williams, who also were close friends of Truman Capote. In order to earn money in the big city before she was a full fledged author, Harper toiled away as an airline reservation receptionist. A job she not only despised, but also left her so exhausted and beat down after work that she never had time to write.

A Christmas Gift That Changed Harper's Life
On Christmas morning in 1956, Harper found a small envelope under the tree with her name on it. Inside the envelop there was a note from Michael Brown and Joy Williams that said: "You have one year off from your job to write whatever you please. Merry Christmas."

Michael and Joy were essentially telling Harper that she could continue living with them for free for one year as long as she adhered to one major stipulation: Harper had to use her year to work on a passion project that she otherwise wouldn't have time for. Some people might have used their year to start a small business, maybe record an album, master a language, travel the world… As you've probably deduced by now, Harper Lee's passion was writing, so she chose to write a book. And what a book she ended up writing!

With her new found freedom and confidence, Harper began writing a collection of short stories about racism in her hometown of Monroeville. She submitted the stories to her agent Michael Crain and an editor at the publishing house J.B. Lippincott & Co. Both men convinced Harper that the stories should be developed into a full length novel. She spent two and a half years crafting what would eventually become "To Kill A Mockingbird". Once the book was finished, her editors at J.B. Lippincott warned Harper that TKAM probably wouldn't sell more than "a few thousand copies".

"To Kill A Mockingbird" was published on July 11, 1960 under the original title "Atticus" (Harper changed the title soon after). The book was an instant success. Within a year, TKAM had been translated into 10 languages and the 35 year old first time author had won numerous literary awards including the Pulitzer Prize. To date, TKAM has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and has been reprinted in 40 languages. In 2006, an organization of British librarians ranked TKAM as the number one book every adult should read before they die. Coming in second place? The Bible. In 1962, a movie based on the book starring Gregory Peck and a young Robert Duvall was released. The movie went on to win three Academy Awards and three Golden Globes.

The book has had such a profound cultural impact that over the decades it has become required reading in pretty much every high school in America. Unlike most books that would be extremely lucky to sell a few hundred thousand copies in their lifetime, more than 50 years later, TKAM sells between 750,000 and 1 million copies EVERY YEAR. So how much money has this put into Harper Lee's pockets? Thanks to a rather messy legal ordeal involving a former agent who allegedly mishandled Harper's copyright and finances, we actually have some precise numbers.

According to legal papers filed against former book agent Sam Pinkus, in the first six months of 2009 alone Harper Lee earned $1,688,064.68 in royalties. Assuming 2009 is an average year, that works out to $3,376,129.39 per year. That's $9,249 per day!

To_Kill_A_Mockingbird

To be fair, Harper didn't exactly enjoy the wealth and fame that came with the enormous success of TKAM. Overwhelmed by the personal attention and press received, Harper stopped giving interviews about herself altogether in 1964 and has scarcely spoken publicly at all ever since. She made an extremely rare public appearance in 2007 when President George W. Bush awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Harper attempted to write two more books, one fiction, one non fiction, but stopped after finding herself unsatisfied with the work.

Harper Lee spent the last few years of her life at an assisted living home in Monroeville. Towards the end she was in poor health, with a very bad memory, near total blindness and very bad hearing. But as book sales continued to churn, her royalties remained strong.

Harper Lee died on February 19, 2016 at the age of 89. According to American copyright law, Harper's heirs will continue to earn big royalties from the book for 70 years following her death. That's the year 2086!

For comparison, the estate of John Steinbeck earned $45 million in royalties between 1994 and 2004 alone. And let's not forget the $50+ million that Harper has already earned from the book since it was published in 1960.

Conclusion
In the end, that one simple Christmas gift in 1956 inadvertently launched one of the most profitable books of all time. I'm obviously not implying that we all have a rich uncle who will give us a year's salary for Christmas. Although, that would be really awesome. But I am saying that if you have a passion, you might need to get creative in order to make it work. As much as you love your amazing apartment and your car and your iPad and your flat screen TV, maybe you need to give some of it up in order to spend a year focusing on your real life goals. Maybe you need to move home for a while and live dirt cheap to get your dreams off the ground. I'm not an expert, so if you're still not convinced, follow the example of Steve Jobs:

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it." -Steve Jobs

'A Christmas Story' Actor Zack Ward Reveals He Still Makes Money Off The Classic Movie

This time of year, a staple of songs and movies get played on what seems like an incessant loop. 'A Christmas Story' is one of those movies. The 1983 film's broadcast rights are held by Turner Broadcasting, and since 1997, the film is shown consecutively on TNT and/or TBS for 24 hours in a marathon dubbed "24 Hours of 'A Christmas Story'. One would think with all of that television airtime, that would mean hefty royalty checks for the actors involved. But according to one of the actors in the film, that isn't quite the case.

Zack Ward, who played Scut Farkus in 'A Christmas Story,' recently revealed to Page Six that though he does still get royalty checks, the amount he makes from the movie isn't anything to write home about. "You're going to be so disappointed," he said. "It's basically about $1,800 every two years… and it comes in Canadian money because we shot in Canada."

As for what the 47-year-old does with the money, he told Page Six that he puts the funds in a special account for his mother in case she were to need it in the future.

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

Despite it being over 3 decades since the movie first hit theaters, Ward revealed that he still gets recognized on the street for his role in the movie.

"So many people come up to me and are like, 'You got your ass kicked by Ralphie,' and it makes them so happy," said Ward. "I think they're connecting to themselves as that little kid who had a bully and when they saw Scut Farkus get beaten up, they were just like, 'Yeah!' They greet me with a lot of love. It's usually very kind."

In addition to still acting, Ward is working with All Sports Market and Global Sports Financial Exchange, Inc, in order to develop a sports exchange that gives fans the opportunity to buy and trade shares of sports teams.

Facebook's Controversies Have Deleted $25 Billion From Mark Zuckerberg's Net Worth

Facebook is not having a good year. Russian election interference, user data breaches, and the departure of executives has delivered a $25 billion blow to Mark Zuckerberg's net worth in 2018. The constant bad news and growing backlash against the social network isn't good news for its founder or his massive net worth. Zuckerberg's vast fortune is largely tied up in Facebook.

In March, the co-founder of data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica revealed that 87 million Facebook accounts had their user data breached and used to target voters in the 2016 presidential election in an effort to sway them to vote for Donald Trump. At that time, Zuckerberg's net worth temporarily declined by $13 billion when he admitted that his company may have made a mistake in not being proactive about the data breach.

Zuckerberg testified before Congress, saying, "When we heard back from Cambridge Analytica that they had told us that they weren't using the data and deleted it, we considered it a closed case. In retrospect, that was clearly a mistake."

Investors soured on Facebook stock due to lackluster sales and poor prospects for growth.

On July 25th, Facebook provided its Q2 earnings after trading hours. That day, Facebook stock was selling at an all-time-high price of $217.50. The next day, shares opened 20% lower, causing Zuckerberg to lose $15.9 billion in one day and another $2.2 billion in the next few days.

Then, in April, WhatsApp founder Jan Koum posted a manifesto of sorts about his departure from the Facebook. Koum announced that he planned to not just leave Facebook, but also give up his seat on the board of Facebook. Remember, Facebook bought WhatsApp in 2014 for $19 billion. Koum decided to leave Facebook because he was upset that Facebook plans to weaken encryption and use personal micro-targeted data from the app for advertising. He was reportedly clashing with Facebook management for months. The privacy and protection of its users' data is at the core of what Koum and his co-founder Brian Acton set out to do with WhatsApp. When they sold their then small startup to Facebook, they promised their user base that WhatsApp's independence would be preserved, as would personal data. In 2016, WhatsApp strengthened its pledge to protect user's data by adding encryption. Koum's exit from Facebook is pretty unusual. Zuckerberg's inner circle of management and its board of directors have been very loyal as scandals have plagued the social network. Additionally, Koum is the only founder of a company Facebook acquired who was a member of its board of directors.

Koum tweeted "It is time. #deletefacebook" as he left.

Just last month, the New York Times dropped a bombshell when it revealed the role COO Sheryl Sandberg played in the company's scandals. She ignored the Russian hacking, played down the data misuse by Cambridge Analytica, and lied about hiring the data company to target George Soros.

Overall, Zuckerberg's net worth is down to $50 billion from nearly $75 billion at the beginning of the year. It is the biggest loss among billionaires this year. He is still the sixth richest person in the world.
