A Millionaire Interviewed 100 Other Millionaires And Found A Surprising, Shared Habit

ESI Money is a personal finance blog run by a self-proclaimed self-made millionaire named John. One of John's recent projects is to interview other millionaires to try and see if he could find any commonalities in their behavior. The big surprise in his findings is actually a lack of behavior, however: Most millionaires don't keep budgets.

You might expect that a person with millions of dollars in the bank wouldn't keep a budget simply because they don't have to, but actually John says the relative absence of millionaire budgets is due to a personality trait many of them seem to share: Self-control. As John put it:

"While it was not expected, the reasons millionaires don't need a budget makes sense – they make a lot and have self-control… In other words, they make a ton, spend only a portion of it, and have plenty left over. Who needs a budget?"

Joe Raedle/Getty Images

John has interviewed 105 millionaires so far, and of the 63 he's asked about budgets, 46 of them said they don't keep one. Their median net worth comes to $2.3 million, and their median age is 50, and while the no-budget millionaires don't keep a budget in the usual sense, many of them do track spending in other ways, like the millionaire who claimed to spend just $90,000 a year:

"Every few months I look to see if my cash balance is bigger than it was a year ago. If it has grown, I invest the money. If dropped, I try to hold off on discretionary expenses. Last year according to Mint, we spent $US90,000, including $US13,000 on home improvement projects."

Self-control and frugality have long been considered common traits among millionaires, but it seems that doesn't always involve strict month-to-month budgets. John sums it up like this:

"A budget is great for the early phases of a financial plan, but if you can grow your income and develop self-discipline not to spend, it's not vital to your success later on."

So if you're thinking about using this information as an excuse to abandon your own personal budget, you might want to reconsider – unless you're already a millionaire.

Highest Paid YouTube Stars: Jake Paul Wants To Be The First Social Media Billionaire

YouTube star Jake Paul may have started small with six second Vine videos, but today he's a full fledged internet sensation. He is the 2nd highest paid YouTube star of 2018 with$21.5 million in total earnings. He attracted more than 3.5 billion views of his rap songs and goofy pranks over the course of the past year. If you ask him, his goals are big and he's not going to stop until he reaches the top. When he was just starting out, Paul's first goal was to buy a home in Calabasas. He's accomplished that. Last year, he paid nearly $7 million for a mansion in the Kardashians' hometown. Now that he has done that, the 21-year-old has set his sights on a bigger goal: Becoming the first social media billionaire. He's giving himself 10 years to reach that goal.

His $21.5 million haul is a career best for Logan Paul's younger brother. Jake Paul was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1997. He started his social media career in September 2013 by posting videos on the now defunct Vine. By the time Vine went under, he had 5.3 million followers and two billion views. He was 16-years-old.

In 2015, Paul was cast on the Disney Channel's show Bizaardvark. In January 2017, he was among a group of guests invited to the White House for an event about social media. As a stunt for his YouTube channel, he hid in a bathroom at the White House and snuck out at 3:30am without being discovered by security.

Jerod Harris/Getty Images

Paul has some words for people who look down on or don't understand internet celebs. He thinks that people who don't understand his work need to look at the impact and influence he has and understand where he is coming from. Well, Paul, your former rental house neighbors off Los Angeles' Melrose Avenue (I am one of them!) probably will never understand how building fires in your empty swimming pool, racing down the street on your motorcycle, holding large and loud parties on your roof, and publishing your address publicly so that fans and paparazzi crowd the block contribute to your work.

Jake Paul has more than 10 million YouTube followers. Paul was fired from Bizaardvark as a result of the news coverage surrounding his antics in the rental house in the Beverly Grove neighborhood of Los Angeles. Paul released a statement on Twitter following the firing saying he would be turning his focus to his personal brand, his YouTube channel, and more adult acting roles. However, in January 2018 Jake uploaded a video to his YouTube channel called "I lost my virginity." The video cause controversy for being too sexually explicit and inappropriate for his younger audience. The thumbnail of the video featured Jake and his then girlfriend Erika Costell semi-naked on a bed with Costell on top of Jake in a sexual position. Soon after that, TMZ leaked a video in which Jake used the n word while rapping. He used the word twice, saying "little a** n*gg**" and "I whip it like my n*gg** Richie Vetter, he make the pussy so wet it gets wetter."

Well, he is only 21. Remember how invincible you felt at 21? Well take that youthful lack of mortality and then add a $19 million bank account.

The Company Behind Marlboro Just Made A $1.8 Billion Investment in Cannabis

In yet another sign that the landscape is shifting towards legal cannabis use in North America, Altria, the company behind Marlboro cigarettes, just announced a massive investment in cannabis company Cronos Group. The investment, worth 2.4 Canadian dollars (about $1.8 billion US), is reportedly part of a larger trend of big tobacco companies getting more and more interested in the world of cannabis, and putting up the money to show it.

Cronos CEO Mike Gorenstein is quoted enthusiastically in the press release announcing the investment, explaining why the partnership makes sense and giving a brief outline of what the company plans to do with all this extra money:

"Altria is the ideal partner for Cronos Group, providing the resources and expertise we need to meaningfully accelerate our strategic growth … The proceeds from Altria's investment will enable us to more quickly expand our global infrastructure and distribution footprint, while also increasing investments in R&D and brands that resonate with our consumers. Importantly, Altria shares our vision of driving long-term value through innovation, and we look forward to continuing to differentiate in this area."

On the stock market, investors responded very favorably to the news, and Cronos' stock saw a reported 35 percent jump after the announcement.

Other big brands have gotten involved in the cannabis industry as of late, and it's not just tobacco giants that are looking at incorporating the product into their businesses. Constellation Brands is the company behind such favorites as Corona beer and Svedka vodka, and in August of this year it announced a $4 billion investment in a Canadian cannabis producer called Canopy Growth, and the following month it was reported that Coca-Cola was in negotiations with a company called Aurora Cannabis to possibly collaborate on a line of beverages infused with CBD (a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis).

Highest Paid YouTube Stars: PewDiePie's Empire And Many Controversies

$

PewDiePie has been on top or near the top of YouTube earners for nearly a decade. This year, he is the 9th highest paid YouTube star with $15.5 million in earnings. The 29-year-old Swede has built an empire off this YouTube channel that makes enough money to make, well, pretty much everyone jealous. As of December 2018, PewDiePie has 14.7 million Instagram followers, 16.1 million Twitter followers, and 75 million YouTube subscribers. His YouTube channel primarily features videos of PewDiePie playing video games and adding funny commentary as he goes. Yeah as someone over the age of 25, this may seem strange, but trust me, the kids love it. As of right now, his YouTube channel has wracked up more than 19 billion video views.

PewDiePie's real name is Felix Kjellberg. He was born in October 1989 in Gotenburg, Sweden. After high school, he went on to attend Chalmers University of Technology, where he majored in Industrial Economics and Technology.  An avid gamer, he spent more time focused on making it to the next level in his favorite games than on making it to his sophomore year.  In 2010, he decided to launch his own YouTube Channel about gaming.  His idea was simple – he'd review the games he was playing, by filming himself playing the games so that viewers could gauge for themselves whether the game was genuinely entertaining.  His tendency to yell at the screen, jump around, and call out obscenities made him very popular very quickly among teenage gamers. At the time many online gaming channels focused on the games themselves. Kjellberg has always been about giving his viewers the experience of playing the games.

BEN STANSALL/AFP/Getty Images

His personality made him popular, but his choice of games has also earned him a strong following among the video game developing community.  He tends to review independent titles, primarily action and horror. Design firms have started shifting their game design, so that the games are not only fun to play, but also fun to watch being played.  His channel eventually became so popular that he dropped out of college. That was in 2011 and he wasn't making quite enough to live on yet, so he sold hot dogs to make ends meet.  In 2012, Maker Studios heard about his successful channel and signed him.  He quickly became the company's most popular online personality.  The scope of his popularity and influence became especially apparent in late 2013.  By November 2013, his channel on YouTube had 15 million subscribers.  That number ballooned to 19 million subscribers just a month later.

Like many YouTube stars, PewDiePie's success has not come without controversy. In February 2017, PewDiePie lost his YouTube Red show after it was revealed that several of his videos contained anti-Semitic references. PewDiePie claimed the videos were sarcastic and merely meant to highlight how people will do anything for money, no matter how inappropriate or shocking. In the most obvious example, he paid two people $5 through the website fiver to hold up a sign that said, "Death to all Jews".

On September 10, 2017, a video was released that showed PewDiePie casually using the "n word" during a livestream. While playing a game called "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds", the YouTuber was heard very clearly saying: "What a f—ing ni—r! Jeez! Oh my god! What the f—? Sorry, but what the f—?"

He had previously landed a multimillion-dollar deal with Disney to launch his own network. These controversies led Disney and YouTube to sever ties with him. Since then, advertisers have returned, spending up to $450,000 for a sponsored video.

In 2013, PewDiePie was the highest paid YouTube star with $12 million in earnings. In 2014, his earnings topped $14 million. In 2015, he earned $9 million. In 2016, PewDiePie made a cool $15 million. In 2017, he made $12 million. In 2018, he made $15.5 million. All of this has given PewDiePie has a net worth of $30 million.

CBS' Les Moonves Will Not Get $120 Million Severance Package

The ruling is in. After a five-month investigation into the sexual assault allegations against former longtime CBS honcho Les Moonves, the board of directors has come to the decision to NOT give him any of the $120 million settlement he was promised in his employment contract. When the board concluded their probe, they determined that Moonves' behavior was cause enough for his firing. CBS' board issued the following statement:

"We have determined that there are grounds to terminate for cause, including his willful and material misfeasance, violation of Company policies and breach of his employment contract, as well as his willful failure to cooperate fully with the Company's investigation. Mr. Moonves will not receive any severance payment from the Company."

Theo Wargo/Getty Images

Moonves was forced out of his role as CEO and Chairman of CBS on September 9th after the New Yorker published a story by Ronan Farrow alleging more than two decades of "unwanted kissing and touching" in the CBS offices. More recently, Moonves was accused of destroying evidence and lying to investigators in an attempt to keep his reputation intact and get the $120 million he was promised.

Moonves' legacy at CBS is now all but destroyed by the numerous sexual assault allegations against him. He is said to be determined to pursue the severance payment through arbitration. Inside CBS, there is a lot of resentment for tainting the network's legacy.

The investigation into the allegations against Moonves began in August. Moonves has maintained that all sexual encounters were consensual. Additionally, he denied the claims that he was violent with women. The firing and denial of severance is the latest step in the downfall of one of the most powerful entertainment executives of the past 25 years.

John Kapoor Is No Longer A Fentanyl Billionaire

$

John Kapoor made his bones in part by his investments in Insys Therapeutics, for which manufacturing fentanyl was a big part of daily business. As a result of his highly criticized business practices, he has for the last five years been referred to as a "fentanyl billionaire," but that designation is no longer accurate for him, as various legal and financial problems have conspired to pull his net worth below the billion dollar margin into the neighborhood of $875 million.

Kapoor is also the chairman of generic drug manufacturer Akorn, and it's to this company, as well as Insys, that his fortunes are largely tied. Of course, no longer being a billionaire is probably the least of Kapoor's worries right now, as he's currently awaiting trial after being arrested in October 2017 on charges involving allegations that Insys was bribing doctors to encourage them to prescribe a fentanyl opioid spray called Subsys to patients, despite its highly powerful and even deadly properties.

Drew Angerer/Getty Images

Kapoor has pleaded not guilty to the charges, but they are only the latest in a long line of accusations against Kapoor going back decades. Last month, Insys announced its intention to sell off its fentanyl business in view of the abuse epidemic spreading across the country and the resultant drop in sales of Subsys spray.

Another question in all this is whether Insys Therapeutics can even continue to survive as a company at all. Sales of Subsys spray have declined a reported 60 percent from their peak in 2015, and the company's only other drug on the market is a powerful liquid nausea treatment called Syndros.

Kapoor had been a billionaire since 2013, when shares in Insys and Akorn were trading at $15 and $20 a share, respectively (they're now both closer to five dollars a share). His net worth peaked about two years after that, when he was worth some $3.3 billion.

Bernie Madoff's Victims Have Recouped $11 Billion – And Counting – Of Their Lost $19 Billion

$

It's been ten years since Ponzi schemer extraordinaire Bernie Madoff was busted for defrauding investors out of billions of dollars. These investors were tricked into believing their investments were turning big profits, but since the whole scam fell apart there's been a concerted effort to try to recoup not only those imaginary profits but their initial cash deposits. And according to a recent Bloomberg report, those efforts are working, and right now more than $11 billion of the total $19 billion in approved reimbursement claims has been recovered.

That's mostly due to the work of Irving Picard, the New York attorney who's in charge of liquidating Madoff's assets and seeing his victims get as much of their money back as possible. If such an effort strikes you as unusual, you aren't wrong, as bankruptcy lawyer Kathy Bazoian Phelps explains: "That kind of recovery is extraordinary and atypical."

Mario Tama/Getty Images

Phelps says that in most Ponzi schemes victims are lucky to get anything at all back, and that most recoveries range anywhere from five to 30 percent of lost funds. And Picard isn't satisfied with the 70 percent of claims he's filled so far, saying that he's got his sights on recovering billions more.

Picard's strategy in recovering the pilfered investments involves a "massive forensic accounting effort" in the Manhattan skyscraper where Madoff's investment firm was once housed, but in short it all comes down to filing suit against any of Madoff's customers who got more money out than they put in.

So far, that's resulted in 1,400 victims having had their losses recouped in full, thanks to a system that paid back smaller claims before larger ones. In a recent interview, Picard says that "a substantial amount of money" remains to be collected through claims now in court, and that eventually all of the money in the customer fund set up to pay back the victims will go to defrauded customers.
