Jeff Bezos Launches $2 Billion "Day One Fund" To Help The Homeless And Create Pre-Schools

$

The world's richest person, Amazon's Jeff Bezos, has launched the "Day One Fund" to help homeless families and create preschools. He has funded this venture with a $2 billion commitment to start. That money will be split between the Day One Families Fund that will help homeless families and the Day One Academies Fund, which will create a network of new, non-profit preschools in low income neighborhoods. Bezos announced the fund in a Tweet on Thursday, September 13th, saying:

"MacKenzie and I share a belief in the potential for hard work from anyone to serve others."

Bezos is, of course, the founder of Amazon and space exploration company Blue Origin as well as the owner of The Washington Post. He is the wealthiest man in the world with a net worth of $170 billion. He is not a member of The Giving Pledge and critics have long been calling for him to direct more of his massive net worth to charitable giving. Back in June, Bezos said that he'd outlined two areas he wanted to focus on for future philanthropic efforts.

Michael Kovac/Getty Images

His full statement is below:

" I talk often about the importance of maintaining a Day 1 mentality. It's always Day 1, and I work hard to apply that mindset to everything I do. It was a Day 1 outlook that made me reach out to ask for suggestions on approaches to philanthropy last year. By so many important measures the world keeps getting better, and it's one of the fantastic aspects of human nature that we humans never stop looking for (and finding!) ways to improve things. Our lives are better than our great grandparents' lives, and their lives were better than their great grandparents' lives before them. If our own great grandchildren don't have lives better than ours, something has gone very wrong. Where's the good in the world, and how can we spread it? Where are the opportunities to make things better? These are exciting questions.

MacKenzie and I share a belief in the potential for hard work from anyone to serve others. We all have that capacity. Business innovators who invent products that empower, authors who write books that inspire, government officials who serve their communities, teachers, doctors, carpenters, entertainers who make us laugh and cry, parents who raise children who go on to live lives of compassion, and many more. In addition to Amazon my areas of focus so far have included investment in the future of our planet and civilization through the development of foundational space infrastructure, support of American democracy through stewardship of the Washington Post, and financial contributions to the dedicated and innovative champions of a variety of causes, from cancer research, to marriage equality, to college scholarships for immigrant students, to decreasing political polarization through cross-partisan support of principled, next-generation military vets running for Congress.

We're excited today to announce the Bezos Day One Fund. It will begin with a commitment of $2 billion and focus on two areas: funding existing non-profits that help homeless families, and creating a network of new, non-profit, tier-one preschools in low-income communities.

The Day 1 Families Fund will issue annual leadership awards to organizations and civic groups doing compassionate, needle-moving work to provide shelter and hunger support to address the immediate needs of young families. The vision statement comes from the inspiring Mary's Place in Seattle: no child sleeps outside.

The Day 1 Academies Fund will launch and operate a network of high-quality, full-scholarship, Montessori-inspired preschools in underserved communities. We will build an organization to directly operate these preschools. I'm excited about that because it will give us the opportunity to learn, invent, and improve. We'll use the same set of principles that have driven Amazon. Most important among those will be genuine, intense customer obsession. The child will be the customer. "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." And lighting that fire early is a giant leg up for any child.

I want to close by thanking everyone who sent me suggestions, and for the inspiring examples of innovation I see every day, large and small. It fills me with gratitude and optimism to be part of a species so bent on self-improvement.

It remains Day 1!

Jeff"

U.S. Open Winner Naomi Osaka Signs With Nissan, Set To Sign Enormous Contract With Adidas

Naomi Osaka just won the U.S. Open at age 20. It is her first Grand Slam title. She defeated Serena Williams, a 23-time major champion, in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, at New York's Arthur Ashe Stadium. Osaka won $3.8 million. Now, reports are surfacing that she is about to sign an enormous contract with Adidas. She is currently on Adidas' payroll with a six figure salary, but that deal expires this year. Her new contract is rumored to be the biggest one that Adidas has ever done with a female athlete. The new contract is worth a reported $8.5 million. This would send Osaka soaring up the list of the highest-paid female athletes and put her earnings this year just below Serena's. The enormous contract renewal with Adidas is a reflection of her new standing in tennis around the world. It may also be a sign of big things to come.

Osaka was thrust into the spotlight not just because of her win against the greatest female tennis player, but because of the way that win happened. Williams received three code violations during the final match. She also argued against one of those violations for coaching. Her coach admitted to giving her hand signals, but it wasn't clear whether or not Serena saw them. She also received a violation for smashing her racket, which cost her a point. The third violation cost her a game when she called the umpire a thief. Williams is enduring a run of bad press and threats of an umpire boycott as a result of her outbursts.

Osaka has also signed on as brand ambassador with Nissan. This deal shows her value to advertisers and her appeal to fans. The deal was announced at Nissan's headquarters in Yokohama, Japan, where Osaka said:

"Growing up, my dad drove a Nissan, so being able to be a brand ambassador now, it feels like I've come full circle."

Osaka also has had endoresment deals with Yonex, Nissin Foods, Wowow and Citizen Watch. Osaka could become the next branding sensation in tennis and sports overall.

Continuing Her Dominance Of The Sports Money World – Naomi Osaka Is Nissan's Newest Global Ambassador

To say that this past week has been crazy for Naomi Osaka might be an understatement. It all started this past Saturday, when the 20-year-old defeated Serena Williams in a controversial US Open Final. Since then, Osaka has been interviewed by the likes of Ellen Degeneres, rubbed shoulders with LeBron James and Channing Tatum, and signed the biggest deal for a female athlete in Adidas history. Now, she can add another accomplishment to that list.

Nissan announced earlier this week that they have signed Naomi Osaka to be the company's next brand ambassador. In a press conference held this past Thursday in Yokohama, Osaka, who became the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam, spoke about how the deal brought her back to her childhood, and how the Japanese connection compelled her to sign on with Nissan.

"Growing up, my dad drove a Nissan, so being able to be a brand ambassador now, it feels like I've come full circle," said Osaka. She went on to say, "This week has been a dream come to life, and I'm so honored to represent Japan and Nissan on the world stage … I was drawn to partner with Nissan because of its strong Japanese DNA and global competitive spirit. The brand is always challenging expectations, and I look forward to bringing its vision for driving excitement to new audiences around the world."

The Japanese car company stated that Osaka, who was born in Japan to a Japanese mother and Haitian father, signed a three-year contract in which she would appear in global promotions and advertising. Osaka joins Nissan's roster of athlete ambassadors that includes the likes of soccer players Gareth Bale and Sergio Aguero.

Interestingly enough, Osaka revealed on Ellen Degeneres' show earlier this week that she doesn't actually own a car. That should all change very soon with the signing of this deal.

Billionaire Paul Allen Prepares World's Largest Plane For Launching Rockets Into Space

Billionaire Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is not one of the most famous names currently involved in the so-called "Billionaire Space Race." But he's recently revealed new information on a project that might raise his profile just a little bit: the Stratolaunch mobile launch platform, which also happens to be the world's biggest airplane. This craft will allow rockets to get a head start into space by launching from the air. Jean Floyd is the Chief Executive Officer at the Stratolaunch Systems Corp company, quoted like so in its official press release announcing the new launch vehicles:

"We are excited to share for the first time some details about the development of our own, proprietary Stratolaunch launch vehicles, with which we will offer a flexible launch capability unlike any other. Whatever the payload, whatever the orbit, getting your satellite into space will soon be as easy as booking an airline flight."

Precise specs on the Stratolaunch aren't being released yet, but it will reportedly have a wingspan that extends farther than a football field, as per an NBC report. And the plan is for rockets to be kept underneath the wings and launched into space at altitudes of 35,000 feet.

Mat Hayward/Getty Images

While the Stratolaunch, which is still in development, will purportedly be the largest craft of its kind, it will not be the first. The air launching technique is also the domain of Northrop Grumman, which recently launched a 55-foot craft called the Pegasus from a jumbo jet that was modified to do that particular job. Stratolaunch Systems wants to do the same, pledging to launch Pegasus rockets from its mobile platform by 2020, with its own larger and higher-capacity medium-launch vehicles to follow in 2022.

Launching rockets from the air has its own advantages due to increased flexibility and mobility, and Stratolaunch hopes it will also reduce the cost and hassle of space launches, eventually making satellite launches "as easy as booking an airline flight."

Billionaire's Daughter Taking Staff Of 12 With Her To College To Help Her Get Through Dorm Life

Remember when you moved into the dorms freshman year and made minute rice that took an hour to cook? No? Just me? Well the daughter of an Indian billionaire is hiring 12 people, including a housekeeper and butler to take care of her lodging while she studies at St. Andrews University. She is being called "Britain's poshest student." In addition to the maid and butler, this unknown freshman will also have a private chef, chauffeur, and footmen. Of course, she isn't really living in the dorms. Her parents bought her a mansion to live in so she won't have to endure dorm life during her four years studying in Scotland.

Earlier in the summer, an advertisement was placed looking for "an outgoing, cheerful" maid with an energetic personality to work for the student. The maid would be in charge of waking the student up, coordinating with other staff regarding her schedule and routine, and assisting with grooming. The maid will also be responsible for maintaining her wardrobe and personal shopping.

Matthew Lewis/Getty Images

The butler will oversee the student's staff. The staff will be expected to open doors for the freshman whenever possible. Footmen will set the table, serve meals, and clean up. The advertisement stated that the family is very formal and wants experienced staff.

The staff will be paid about $39,000.

And I thought it was cool that my dorm had weekly maid service!

30-Year-Old NFL Player Abruptly Retired In The Middle Of A Game This Weekend – So What Happens To His Contract And Money?

$

Vontae Davis is a 30-year-old football player who has played in the NFL since 2009. He is a cornerback. He was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the first round of the 2009 draft. At the time he signed a five-year $10.25 million contract that came with $7.43 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $500,000. He played with the Dolphins until 2011. He played for the Colts from 2012 – 2017. He signed a new four-year $39 million contract with the Colts in 2014. In 2018 he signed a one-year $5 million contract to play with the Bills, of which $1.5 million was a signing bonus. When you add it all up, he's earned around $55 million in salary before taxes and fees. Call it $20 million, generously, after taxes and fees. Now that you have the numbers, wait til you hear what Vontae did over the weekend in the middle of a game:

During halftime of the Buffalo Bills' week 2 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Vontae Davis walked off the field in the middle of the first half.

He told a coach "I'm done." He told teammates that he realized he "shouldn't be out there anymore," changed into his street clothes, and left the stadium. If that sounds like a crazy situation…well, it is.

It's even crazier when you think that Davis has earned about $4.3 million already this year. Luckily for the Bills, they can recoup a good portion of what he's made.

As former agent Joel Corry pointed out, Davis will have to return most of his $1.5 million signing bonus. The team can also void almost the entirety of his contract, which is worth $2.25 million.

Additionally, Davis made $250,000 from a workout bonus and about $78,000 from 46- and 53-man active roster bonuses. All told, he'll still end up with a shade under $1 million for 30 minutes of football. That's not a bad deal.

Getty

In the meantime, the Bills are still on the hook for about $4.3 million in salary cap space. But they should see some leniency as they work to get their money back.

It's just another twist in one of the most bizarre stories the league has ever seen. Check out Davis's full retirement statement below.

So what do you make of a 30-year-old (presumably) healthy athlete calling it quits barely two games into a $5 million season? Is the NFL just that brutal on the body and mind? Could you picture yourself giving up around $4 million in salary? Or would you ride the year out and retire in a more normal way?

Scooter Braun Files $10 Million Lawsuit Against Lady Gaga's Former Manager

$
0
0

We've all been there: your friend asks you to borrow some money and promises that they'll pay you back as soon as possible, only to never actually pay you back. When the amount is small, perhaps $5 or $10, maybe you're willing to overlook it. But when the amount is $10 million, not so much. Justin Bieber's manager Scooter Braun finds himself in that exact situation.

According to TMZ, Scooter Braun's company, Ithaca Management Holdings, filed a lawsuit against Lady Gaga's former manager Troy Carter, claiming that Carter failed to pay back a $10 million loan that he was given in June 2016. Per the lawsuit, Ithaca Management Holdings claimed that the agreed upon deal was that if Carter's company received money from a case it was arbitrating with Carter's former client Lady Gaga, Carter would pay back the $10 million he was loaned.

The lawsuit claims that Carter's company did in fact settle the case with Gaga, but attempted to hide the money in order to avoid paying the loan, and that Carter ignored a letter sent to him demanding payment.

Carter told TMZ an entirely different story. He said that he never borrowed money from Scooter Braun, but instead agreed to re-purchase Atom Factory, which was a company that Carter had previously sold Braun. According to Carter, the agreement was that if he paid up front, Braun would give him a discount. He declined to go into specifics regarding whether or not he owes Scooter any more money.

(Alex Wong/Getty Images)

Carter then insinuates that race is playing a part in the lawsuit. "It's ironic how I can make it out of the streets, only to be extorted by paper gangsters and their attorney," said Carter.

He continued, "The only fraud is Scooter Braun professing to be a high integrity individual. The spurious speeches about equal rights don't square when you make excuses for clients that make jokes about 'n******s.' Or, attempting to spin the press when a client diminishes the horrific crimes of slavery. He goes on … "Had these comments been anti-semitic, he would've made sure those clients never worked again. It's financial gain over personal principals."

Carter ended the conversation with TMZ by saying, "There are only a handful of African-American executives left in our business and yet he's okay with attempting to falsely ruin my reputation."

It doesn't appear that there will be a resolution to this situation anytime soon.

Les Moonves Will Stay On As Advisor To CBS, Receive Possible $120M Payout Pending Investigation

$

The last we heard from Les Moonves, the longtime head of CBS had been forced out in the wake of multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, and his in-negotiation exit package reported to be worth anywhere from $100 million to $125 million, was on the line. Now, NBC reports that Moonves has accepted an unpaid position in an advisory capacity to help transition in his replacement, and a sum of $120 million will be put into a trust pending the results of an internal investigation being carried out by CBS.

There's a chance that the public will never know exactly how that investigation turns out. CBS would, under certain circumstances, be required to disclose any payouts to Moonves like a $120 million exit package, but in the separation agreement between them CBS, also agreed to "seek to preserve the confidentiality of all written and oral reports by the investigators in the Internal Investigation, and all information and findings developed by the investigators or included in such written or oral reports in relation to Executive."

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

Moonves' interim replacement is Joseph Ianniello, who released a memo to his staff pledging to change the culture left behind by Moonves' leadership:

"At the core of any company is its culture … And never has it been more important for us to make it abundantly clear that CBS has a steadfast commitment to diversity, inclusion and a safe and positive working environment."

That exit package would be even higher than it is, but another (previously reported) aspect of Moonves' exit is that $20 million of his severance will go towards various #MeToo affiliated causes. And even though he should consider himself lucky if he makes it out with any severance at all, the $120 million is less than half of the $280 million the entire remainder of his CBS contract would have been worth.

Nas' Tech Investments Are Paying Off In A Big Way

$

New York native Nas, who released his debut album Illmatic back in 1994, consistently finds himself in many "Top 10 rappers of all time" lists. But this year, as a result of some smart investing, the 45-year-old wordsmith found himself in a completely different Top 10 list.

For the first time in his legendary career, Nas found himself on the list of Forbes' Hip Hop Cash Kings list, which reports the hip-hop acts who have made the most money over the past year. Nas, who turned 45 this past Friday, earned $35 million over the past year, which was good enough to put him in a tie with Dr. Dre for the No. 6 spot on the list. The rapper's appearance on the list shouldn't come as much of a surprise to those who have been paying attention to some of his business moves though.

Back in 2016, we ran a story that outlined Nas' venture capital tech investment firm, Queensbridge Venture Partners. In a 2016 interview with Fast Company, the "Made You Look" rapper revealed that he had been interested in investing since he was a young boy. At the time, we reported that QVP was investing anywhere from $100,000 to $500,000 in a company, and were pitched by roughly 100 companies per month.

(Craig Barritt/Getty Images for Italia Independent New York City, LLC)

Fast forward to today, and Nas is raking in millions from his investments; most notably Ring, a smart doorbell company that was purchased by Amazon for $1.1 billion earlier this year. Queensbridge Venture Partners invested $4.5 million in a Series A investment round back in July 2014. Amazon also purchased PillPack for $1 billion, an online pharmacy company that QVP invested in back in 2014.

Don't expect this trend to stop anytime soon. Nas' venture capital firm has invested in a variety of different companies, including Lyft, Coinbase, Genius, and Mass Appeal, and will undoubtedly continue their search for the next big thing.

"[Hip-hop artists] are always advancing technology—from one turntable to two turntables and a fader," said Nas to Forbes. "There wasn't a time when [rappers] didn't think about investing. It just so happens that the world is opening up."
