Richard Branson Says He's "Neck And Neck" With Jeff Bezos In Billionaire Space Race

$

The term "space race" came about in the late 1950s and early 1960s, when the USA and the USSR were locked in a heated contest to see who could conquer space (or at least the moon) first. Now, we have a space race of our own, but rather than being between rival nations it's between rival billionaires. And according to a recent interview with one of those billionaires, the state of the race is "neck and neck" between Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos. It was the former who told the BBC's Yours and Yours radio program his opinion on how his efforts to successfully bring travelers into space compares to Bezos' own efforts:

"I think we're both neck and neck as to who will put people into space first… Ultimately, we have to do it safely. It's more a race with ourselves to make sure we have the craft that are safe to put people up there."

Astrid Stawiarz/Getty Images

He put an even finer point on the conversation than that, telling the interviewer his own first trip into space is "months away, not years away." And the founder of Virgin Galactic, who's been investing in space travel going back to 2004, isn't about to be caught unprepared when it comes time to blast off:

"I'm going for astronaut training; I'm going for fitness training, centrifuge and other training, so that my body will hopefully cope well when I go to space."

Obviously, if Branson is right and his first journey into space is that soon in the future, this leg of the billionaire space race will reach the finish line fairly soon as well. For his part, Bezos hasn't responded publicly to Branson's claim, so we'll all just have to keep our eyes on the skies and see how everything turns out.

Anthony Davis Is Set To Sign A Larger Contract Than Any Player In NBA History

$

Anthony Davis has had a monster year. He won both his first playoff game and series in a convincing sweep of the Portland Trailblazers. He also received All-NBA First Team honors, essentially saying he was the top player at his position this year.

More importantly, the All-NBA nod means Davis can potentially make more money from one contract than any player before him.

Davis is now eligible for the supermax contract, assuming he re-signs with the Pelicans. The team can offer him a five-year deal next offseason worth $230 million. The deal would kick in starting in the 2020-21 season and would result in Davis having the wealthiest contract in the league.

Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

To earn the super-max, a player either has to make the All-NBA team or win Defensive Player of the Year in two out of the past three seasons, or win MVP in one of the previous three seasons.

The player must also be on the team that drafted him or has to have been traded on his rookie deal to another team.

While Davis will likely benefit from making the All-NBA team, several other notable players will not receive supermax contracts.

Klay Thompson didn't earn All-NBA honors, so he won't be eligible this summer. However, if he makes one of the three All-NBA teams next year, he could sign the supermax next offseason, when he's a free agent. Similarly, Draymond Green didn't make the All-NBA team this year but could do so next season. However, since Steph Curry has already agreed to a supermax deal, only one, either Green or Thompson could potentially sign a supermax contract.

Meanwhile, Paul George and Jimmy Butler could have signed supermax deals or extensions if they had stayed with the Pacers and Bulls respectively. Instead, they gave up that ability when they were traded.

So don't feel too bad for Davis. Even though his Pelicans fell to the Warriors in the second round, he's about to become a very wealthy man.

Roseanne Barr Just Cost Herself At Least $100 Million In Syndication And Future Episodic Salary

You've heard the story by now. Roseanne Barr posted an offensive tweet in which proclaimed that former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett (who is black) was the result of the Muslim Brotherhood and planet of the apes having a baby. Ouch. Not smart. Why do we even have Twitter? Does anything good happen there?

Not surprisingly, upon learning of the tweet, ABC canceled "Roseanne" pretty much instantaneously. It was not an easy decision. The enormous success of the rebooted Roseanne was the wind beneath ABC's wings that had taken them soaring to new ratings and revenue highs. But they had to do something. ABC is owned by Disney. There was just no other option other than cancellation.

And with that move, roughly 100 people who thought their jobs were guaranteed for years, suddenly found themselves jobless.

To make matters worse for those actors, writers, assistants, camera operators, directors, editors etc… they basically all had to turn down other jobs in recent weeks and commit to Roseanne for the next 12 months. These jobs aren't flexible. TV jobs are like baseball teams that don't trade during a season. You pick your team before the season starts and you go. If you quit or get cut, you need to wait until the next spring training to join a new team. You hope the team you picked stays together for a few seasons and doesn't get dropped from the league after a bad losing streak (bad ratings).

Actually, it's even worse. Roseanne's rebooted new season was the #1 new show on television BY FAR. Some episodes attracted 20 million viewers. A bad episode was watched by 10 million. For perspective, today any TV show that gets 3-5 million viewers per week is a MASSIVE SUCCESS that will get renewed over and over. So it's not like these writers just got cut from a mediocre team that consistently makes the playoffs. It's sort of like they were a part of a Yankees team that has so much talent that they'll easily go on to win 10 World Series in a row… but then the team plane crashes on opening day killing everyone on board.

And how did that plane crash? Captain Roseanne nosedived into a mountain.

For anyone connected to Roseanne's production crew, there's one consolation: No one had more to gain, and therefore more to lose, than Roseanne Barr herself.

VALERIE MACON/AFP/Getty Images

Not only was the Roseanne reboot cancelled, old Roseanne episodes have been pulled from syndication from Hulu, TV Land, and CMT.

By not earning her $250,000 per-episode salary, Roseanne will lose $3.25 million just on this most recent season that was in pre-production. And that amount could have risen dramatically if more seasons were ordered in the future. Keep in mind that many stars of popular sitcoms today earn $750,000 – $1 million per episode.

Syndication is where this really packs a punch to Roseanne's pocketbook. Between future syndication deals that could have been made on new episodes, and syndication renewals on original episodes, Roseanne just cost herself A FORTUNE. Keep in mind that old Roseanne episodes surged in popularity recently thanks to Donald Trump's Presidency and a general 90s nostalgia. The demand in syndication markets could have been extremely strong when various global syndication deals were up for renewal.

When you add it all up, an inside source tells me that between missed episodic salary and lost syndication deals, Roseanne Barr's tweet cost just her a minimum of $100 million in the short term. Perhaps $150 – 200 million over the decades. The vast majority of that is lost future syndication royalties.

Ok so Roseanne Barr's net worth is still $80 million, which is PLENTY of money to allow her to go back to her macadamia nut farm in Hawaii (she actually lives on one) and basically stick her head in the sand forever. But still pretty painful to lose out on such a large sum of money that should have been extremely easy to make.

Two other people who are probably fuming are Roseanne Executive Producers, Matt Williams and Bruce Helford.

Matt Williams is actually the sole "creator" of Roseanne, though he was fired from the show after the 13th episode. He did however return as showrunner of the the rebooted series. Williams easily lost out on as much as Roseanne from the cancellation. Roughly $100 – 200 million. As the show's creator, he likely had an even larger back-end cut of Roseanne's syndication royalty points. Don't feel too bad for Matt, though. After being fired from Roseanne, he co-created Home Improvement and is worth at least $200 million by our estimate.

Bruce Helford stepped into Executive Produce Roseanne from 1992 to 1993. He was then brought back for the reboot. Bruce likely lost out on $100 million from this cancellation. Don't feel too bad for him either. After leaving Roseanne, he created The Drew Carey Show among others. Bruce is worth at least $100 million.

Carmelo Anthony Invests $5M In Nationwide Sports Bar/Pizza Chain

If the name of South Bronx sports bar, The Ainsworth, rings a bell, it's probably because you saw one of the eight million internet articles about its new specialty, gold buffalo wings made with real gold. The pub chain's owners, Brian Mazza and Matt Shendell, are looking to strike on that notoriety while the iron is hot, and they're partnering with real estate company Somerset Hospitality Group to roll out a bunch of new locations nationwide, and heading up a new $5 million investment is NBA star Carmelo Anthony.

The New York Post reports that the plan is for The Ainsworth to open up shop at anywhere from 20 to 30 new locations adjacent to sports stadiums across the country, each one with a new Nobody's Pizza location right next door (Nobody's Pizza is a Somerset holding). Anthony issued a press statement about the investment, and if you read between the lines you can see his rationale that putting beer together with pizza is a can't-miss business proposition:

"I am excited about the prospects of partnering with The Ainsworth and Nobody's Pizza — combining food, entertainment, sports and real estate."

Bryn Lennon/Getty Images

Somerset's Keith Rubenstein says that locations have only just begun to be scouted for the new Ainsworth/Nobody's Pizza locations, but that the first will likely be in Nashville where there was already a planned Ainsworth location. He also delivered a little bit of businessspeak on the subject of the side-by-side business model:

"We plan to … use our investor base of professional athletes and influencers to promote operations and growth. Side-by-side openings are just being planned and it is too soon to know where."

So it will probably be a while before you see an Ainsworth/Nobody's Pizza in your town, if you see one at all. But if you do, Carmelo Anthony will be one of the people to thank.

Warren Buffett Has Raised $26M For Charity By Auctioning Off Lunches With Him

If your bank account has ever looked a bit worse for wear, it's possible you've wondered to yourself how much extra scratch you could make by doing what Warren Buffett does and auctioning off lunch dates to the highest bidder. I don't know what figure you would come up with in those circumstances, but it's unlikely to be in the same field as Buffett. CNBC recently tallied up the total funds he's raised since starting this tradition almost 20 years ago: $26 million.

It all started in 2000, when Buffett's late wife Susie came up with the idea to auction off lunch with her famous, wealthy husband. The winning bids topped off at around $25,000 when the auctions were held in San Francisco, but in 2003 when Buffett had an idea of his own to move the action over to eBay, the action started to really take off. By 2008, a lunch with Buffett went for $2 million.

Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

The money goes to the Glide Foundation, a San Francisco non-profit anti-poverty organization that Susie Buffett supported strongly while she was alive. Glide co-founders Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani told CNBC the tale of how credit for the famous Warren Buffett lunch auctions belongs to Susie:

"We met Susie 25 years ago, but she had actually been coming to Glide for nearly two years before that. She wanted to make sure we were not a cult. When she saw we advocated for inclusiveness and social justice for everyone, she started to volunteer."

For her own part, Susie gets to speak for herself in the recent HBO documentary Becoming Warren Buffett, in which she explains that influencing her husband to support Glide was part of a larger pattern that went back to when they were in their 30s:

"When the children were growing up, I was very involved in civil rights. I was immersed in it and I think that's what made Warren a Democrat. He would go with me to hear speakers."

Buffett's continuing support of Glide following his wife's death in 2004 is testament to the lasting impact of that influence. As of this writing, this year's Power Lunch with Warren Buffett auction has a current bid of $3.2 million, so the demand hasn't slowed down yet.

Kevin Federline Wants $60K A Month In Child Support From Britney Spears

$
0
0

Britney Spears' ex-husband and baby daddy, Kevin Federline, is at it again. He says he deserves more money from his successful ex to afford to care for Sean Preston and Jayden James when he has custody of them. KFed filed legal documents last week seeking a three-fold increase in child support. He is currently paid $20,000 a month by Spears. In the legal filing he stated that his income is "approximately $3,000 per month." Britney Spears is estimated to make $34 million this year. The current child support agreement Spears and Federline has dates back to 2008 when their sons were one and two years old. Apparently, tweens are $40,000 per month more expensive to feed and clothe part time.

KFed's attorney said that his client should be paid "at least three times the current amount" because of the extreme disparity in their parents' income and how that effects the experience they have when they are at their father's house rather than their mother's house. Federline has been attempting to get his payday from Spears raised for months. He was trying to avoid taking her to court, but he was not satisfied with the offer she presented to him. Federline's attorney called Spears' child support modification proposal unreasonable.

"It's their position that they don't have to turn over Britney's financial information, including tax returns, which is required under the California family code. It's not California celebrity code edition, she has to comply."

Federline is a father of six. He has two children with his pre-Britney fiancée, Shar Jackson. Then, he and Spears had their two sons. He has two daughters with his current wife, Victoria Prince.

In the legal documents, Federline highlights the differences in his standard of living and his ex-wife's.  Spears resides in a mansion on 21 acres with a pool and tennis court.

David Hardenberg/Getty Images

Federline lives in a 2,000 square foot home with his wife and some combination of two to six of his six children. When Sean and Jayden are with their mother, they go on luxury vacations and have tutors and private chefs. When they are with their father, he cannot afford to take them on vacation or buy them the latest iPad. He wants increased child support to be able to provide the same standard of living for his sons with Spears as they enjoy with her.

Back in 2008, when the ex-couple came to their current agreement, he was making six figures annually dancing and DJing.

"I am no longer able to perform as a dancer due to my age, and I have not been as successful in putting out new music as I was in 2008. I am simply less of a "name" and less in demand than I was in 2008, which has negatively affected my income."

Meanwhile, TMZ is reporting that Britney Spears is fuming because it isn't her fault that he decided to add two more kids to his brood after they divorced, therefore it isn't her problem that he is strapped for cash. Also, it shouldn't be her responsibility to help fund his lifestyle. To be fair, she has a point and $20k a month is adequate for two tween boys.

Basically, it seems like KFed is bent out of shape because his ex is making $34 million a year while he makes $36,000, or $3,000 per month. Federline is barely getting by because he has six children and a wife to support. The funds Britney pays him pay for all of his kids. Federline says his expenses are about $23,000 a month. So, with the $20,000 a month Britney gives him and his income of $3,000, he is breaking even.

Hey, KFed, do you know what many dancers do when they are too old to dance? They teach dance. You might want to try that rather than bleeding money from your successful ex.

This NFL Player Might Be On The Hook For $75 Million Worth Of Cavs Jerseys Thanks To Tweet

These days, almost everybody knows it pays to be careful what you tweet. This is most obvious when some high-powered media figure gets fired over tweeting something offensive, but a different flavor of the lesson has been learned by Damarious Randall of the Cleveland Browns, who recently posted a tweet that will likely survive for a while in infamy:

"If the Cleveland Cavaliers win the 2018 NBA finals I'll buy everyone who retweet's this a jersey…"

The Finals started Thursday night, and if the series goes the Cavs' way Randall may have a bit of a financial problem on his hands. As of this writing, the tweet has more than a million RTs, and if the cheapest licensed adult-sized jersey comes with a $75 price tag, he's looking at an expense of more than $75 million, putting aside the practical consideration of figuring out exactly how to purchase a jersey for over a million Twitter accounts. The lesson here is simple, and probably worth repeating: Be careful what you tweet.

Maddie Meyer/Getty Images

You may be thinking to yourself, "big deal, he's in the NFL, he's rich, he can afford it," well, he's not that rich. Randall has a reported two years left on his contract with the Browns, valued at a little over $10 million — in other words, a fraction of the cash he'd require to make good on his promise if the Cavs win. Fortunately, there is some relief in sight, since according to a Darren Rovell Twitter report on the matter, sportswear brand Fanatics has offered to cut him a wholesale deal on the jerseys, which he says would save him 50 percent. Of course, even $37.5 million worth of jerseys is out of Randall's price range, so he's probably still going to have his fingers crossed during the NBA Finals this year.

Televangelist Tells Congregation That God Wants Him To Have A Fourth Private Plane

$

The joke about televangelists is that most of them are, at best, money-grubbing hucksters out to bilk as many gullible senior citizens as they can out of their last dimes, if necessary. It's not my place to say whether that description applies to Louisiana TV preacher Jesse Duplantis, but Duplantis is making headlines for his latest claim that God Himself told him that he needs to get a fourth private plane, so that he can better spread the gospel around the world.

To hear Duplantis tell it, God was actually quite specific about his private jet needs. God's holy decree is that Duplantis find the cash for a Dassault Falcon 7X like the one pictured below, which USA Today reports costs about $54 million new, but as little as $20 million used (no word on whether God insists that Duplantis should get a brand new private jet to add to his fleet or not). In a video to his flock, Duplantis seemed to acknowledge the inevitable critics of his latest correspondence with the Lord:

"Now, some people believe that preachers shouldn't have jets … I really believe that preachers ought to … have every available outlet to get this Gospel preached to the world."

JEAN-PIERRE MULLER/AFP/Getty Images

Duplantis also assures his followers that the plane will belong to his ministry, and wouldn't be used for any worldly purposes. Instead, he promises, the plane would be used by his ministry even after he died — just in case any cynical parties out there might suspect he was planning to keep the plane for himself after he died.

Also of interest is Duplantis's pledge to keep the process transparent, as he seeks to raise funds for lucky private jet number four:

"I like all people to know exactly what I'm doing in this ministry … We don't hide nothing whatsoever at all."

Duplantis has a history of defending the private jet collections of himself and other rich televangelists, in 2015 citing his inability to "get in a long tube with a bunch of demons."

Rupert Murdoch's Billionaire Rival Threatening Fox Sale To Disney

$
0
0

There is drama in the billionaire media mogul set. Rupert Murdoch's bitter rival, Comcast owner Brian Roberts, is reportedly complicating Murdoch's plan to sell his Fox assets to Disney for $52.4 billion. This deal was put together as part of his plan to turn his media and entertainment empire over to his sons Lachlan and James. The elder Murdoch entered into a deal last year to sell his U.S. based entertainment empire to Disney. The House of the Mouse wants Fox's popular franchises like The Simpsons and the Marvel movies to launch a streaming service to take on Amazon Prime and Netflix. Fox News is not a part of the Disney deal.

Comcast is now promising to put forth a bit that is at least as favorable to Fox shareholders as the one Disney has on the table. More concerning for Murdoch is the plan that Roberts' deal is a cash one.

Once the sale to Disney is done, Murdoch planned to make Lachlan the head of a smaller Fox company based on Fox News and Fox Sports. Lachlan would also take over The Sun, The Times, and the Wall Street Journal. James Murdoch is expected to join the board of Disney as a replacement for chairman Bob Iger.

Ethan Miller/Getty Images

Murdoch and Brian Roberts have clashed repeatedly over the decades. Ironically, Disney was often the third component of a number of three way battles between the media and entertainment empires. In 2001, Murdoch wanted to take over DirecTV. Roberts reacted to that buy expanding Comcast and taking over the broadband operation of AT&T.

Comcast has a $60 billion war chest to use for the takeover battle. Fox's deal with Disney includes the film and TV studios, sports networks, National Geographic, Star India, and stakes in Hulu and British broadcaster Sky.

Comcast is the owner of Universal Pictures and NBC. It is a rival of Disney. Reports say that Roberts, Comcast's CEO, will only put forth a formal deal for Fox if the AT&T takeover of Time Warner is approved. A ruling on that case, which is similar in structure to Comcast's potential takeover of Fox, is expected in June.
