19-Year-Old Quinn Kofler Just Won $15 Million In Lottery. We Have Words Of Caution For Him.

Quinn Kofler is a 19-year-old from Bonita Springs, Florida who has just seen his life turn around in a dramatic fashion. Last year, he was arrested for loitering in Fort Meyers. Today, he's likely perusing real estate listings, looking for a home.

Kofler won $15 million playing the Florida 100X the Cash scratch off game. He opted to take a one-time lump-sum payout of $11,175,000. The Florida Lottery withholds 24% of taxes on the winnings, which leaves $8.4 million. Even with $8.4 million, that puts him in the highest federal income tax bracket, which means Uncle Same will take another 39.6% of his winnings. That leaves Kofler with about $5.1 million, or $84,000 a year until he turns 80—if he doesn't spend a dime of his winnings in the next year.

Kofler could be set for life. But the odds are stacked against him. Refer back to our article on why winning the lottery is a bad thing.

Kena Betancur/Getty Images

Remember Marie Holmes? She was a single mother of four in North Carolina who won $88 million in the lottery. That kind of money is immediately life-changing. And it sure did change the life of Holmes' boyfriend, Lamarr McDow. The lottery winner has used millions of her winnings to bail her alleged drug dealer boyfriend out of jail. Holmes won a third of the $564.1 million dollar jackpot and received $88 million after taxes. She has pledged $21 million in bail money for her boyfriend.

And then there was the case of Jack Whittaker. In 2002, the West Virginia native won a $315 million lotto jackpot. He had a net worth of over $17 million before winning Powerball. After the win, Whittaker took the $113.4 million cash payout. And then his life went off the rails. Within four years of his Powerball win, Whittaker was out of money – not just the $113 million lotto money, but also the $17 million he had made himself before the win. He was being sued by Caesar's Atlantic City for bouncing $1.5 million in checks. Those checks were to cover his gambling losses. He counter-sued, claiming that thieves stole all of his money by going to 12 different branches of City National Bank and cashing 12 checks that drained his account. Then, in July 2009, 42-year-old Ginger Whittaker Bragg, Whittaker's daughter was found dead. As if all of this isn't bad enough, his home burned down, was a total loss and was not insured. Jack Whittaker blames his Powerball win for ruining his life.

Billie Bob Harrell, Jr. won $31 million in 1997. In 1999, he committed suicide. He had been subjected to incessant requests for money from family and friends.

William Post won $16.2 million in 1988. In 1989 his brother hired a contract killer to murder Post and his wife. His landlady sued for portion of the jackpot. He was convicted of assault for firing a gun at a debt collector. He declared bankruptcy. He died in 2006.

Jeffrey Dampier won $20 million in 1996. He was kidnapped and murdered by his sister-in-law.

Willie Hurt won $3.1 million in 1989. By 1991 he was a cocaine addict, divorced, and broke. He was eventually indicted for murder.

All of these examples should serve as cautionary tales for young Quinn Kofler. The first thing he should do is NOT commit to giving money to his friends and family. The next thing he should do is hire a financial manager and an attorney.

The owner of the 7-Eleven that sold Kofler the winning ticket will get a $30,000 bonus. Jackpots range from $30 to $15 million on the $30 ticket. The chances of winning the top prize as Kofler did are one in four million.

We wish Quinn Kofler the best of luck in managing his newfound fortune!

Here Are The 10 Most Valuable Teams In Major League Baseball

$

Baseball has experienced a bit of a renaissance over the past few years. Exciting, young teams like the Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros have ended long championship droughts, and the World Series has gone to seven games in three of the past four seasons. The result is an uptick in franchise value, though some familiar names still lay claim to the most valuable in the sport.

MLB began 115 years ago, though baseball has been around for even longer than that. These teams are some of the original franchises of the sport, with five of the ten on this list founded before 1900, and two (the Red Sox in 1901 and the Yankees in 1903) developed just at the turn of the century. Having that historical significance has been very beneficial to the value of these franchises.

Without further adieu, here's a look at the top ten most valuable franchises in major league baseball.

Getty Images

New York Yankees – $4 billion

No surprise that the Yankees top this list. With a payroll of nearly $200 million, the team isn't afraid to spend money to make money. The presence of the team's own television network helps bump up its value, as well. Though the franchise is worth more than any other in baseball, the Yankees have only won two World Series championships this century.

Los Angeles Dodgers – $3 billion

The Dodgers made the NLCS two years ago and the World Series last year. Their value has only climbed since a new ownership group including Magic Johnson took over in 2011. It doesn't hurt that the Dodgers franchise, like the Yankees, is one of the most storied in all of baseball.

Chicago Cubs – $2.9 billion

Even when they were the lovable losers, the Cubs were a valuable franchise. They're by far the more popular team in Chicago and have always featured several fan favorites, even if those favorites didn't produce a championship. After snapping a 108-year title drought in 2016, the Cubs value has soared even higher.

San Francisco Giants – $2.5 billion

Starting in 2010, the Giants made a habit of winning a World Series every other year. That trend ended with their 2014 championship, but still, three in half a decade is pretty good. The result is a spot among the top five most valuable franchises in all of baseball. Even losing nearly 100 games and finishing last in the NL West in 2017 hasn't diminished the Giants' worth.

Boston Red Sox – $2.8 billion

The Red Sox hadn't won a World Series in 88 years when they finally snagged a championship in 2004. Since then they've won two additional times and are consistent contenders in the AL East. Despite a few down seasons – and the departure of legend David Ortiz last offseason – the team is still worth plenty.

New York Mets – $2.1 billion

After reaching the World Series in 2015, the Mets looked poised to win their first championship since 1986. But an NL Wild Card loss and a 70-92 season have followed, leaving the Mets in a precarious place. The team's value is still quite high thanks to being in the number one market in the country, though they're only worth about half as much as their crosstown rival.

St. Louis Cardinals – $1.9 billion

The Cardinals have thrived as one of baseball's most popular franchises despite being in a smaller market. The city has always supported the team, even through its recent lean seasons. And with sluggers like Mark McGwire and Albert Pujols leading the way over the past quarter-century, St. Louis is no stranger to the long ball.

Getty Images

Los Angeles Angels – $1.8 billion

The Angels can thank Shohei Ohtani for an increase in their value. The rookie phenom is the league's most-hyped two-way player since Babe Ruth. Even if he doesn't win MVP, his mere presence boosts the Angels in a market with plenty of people to support the team.

Philadelphia Phillies – $1.7 billion

The Phillies won the World Series in 2008 and were the NL champions the following season. Though they made the playoffs the next two years, Philadelphia hasn't had a season above .500 since 2011. They haven't finished higher than third in the NL East in that span. Still, being in a major market, plus 135 years of history, have helped the Phillies maintain a valuable position among baseball franchises. And that patience may finally pay off – though we're just about a fifth of the way through the MLB season, the Phillies are hanging around the top spot in their division.

Washington Nationals – $1.675 billion

From 1969 to 2004, the Washington Nationals were known as the Montreal Expos. After baseball left Montreal, the Nationals finished last in the NL East in five of their first six seasons in Washington, including a pair of 103-loss campaigns. But brighter days appear to be ahead in our nation's capital. Each year since 2012, the Nationals have ended the season no worse than second in their division. They've made the playoffs four times in that span, though they've never escaped the first round. Stephen Strasburg is still one of the key players on this team, though until he can help Washington break its postseason curse, he won't ascend into the group of elite pitchers in the league.

The Fact Is, If You're Rich, You Live Longer

$

The rich get all the breaks. Not only are their lives infinitely less stressful with the whole not having to juggle the bills thing, now it turns out they also live longer. Yep, that's right. Money can't buy love, but it can buy you a longer and healthier life. For some rich people, this means spending money to live as long as possible.

All is not lost for us poorer folk though. Over the last few decades, the life expectancy for the average person has risen nearly everywhere in the world. In the U.S., China, and most of Easter Europe, the average life expectancy has reached the late 70s. However, if you're in Japan or Western Europe, you can expect to live into your early 80s.

Rich people are planning on living about two decades longer than the average person. In a new survey from UBS Financial Services, 53% of wealthy investors responded that they planned to live to 100. That's no easy task, but it is not as hard as it used to be. Right now the average Japanese woman has a life expectancy of 87. Japanese men are expected to live to 81.

Matt Cardy/Getty Images

Being rich also gives you a leg up on living longer. The richest 1% of American woman live more than a decade longer than the poorest 1%, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2016. Amongst men, the gap between the richest and poorest Americans is nearly 15 years.

The wealthy also understand that living until they are 100 is an expensive prospect. In order to get to your 100thbirthday, you'll need to spend more on healthier food, exercise, health care, and other life lengthening practices and services. Living into your 11thdecade also requires paying bills longer and having enough money to last that long.

People who are millionaires with a $2 million or less net worth are willing to give up a third of their savings for an additional 10 years or life. People with more than $50 million were willing to spend nearly half of their fortune for an extra decade of life.

There is one trend in life expectancy that is surprising. The life expectancy of Americans has declined, two years in a row. Experts blame this on the opioid crisis, but that doesn't fully explain it. Even before the opioid crisis, life spans of Americans were lagging behind other developed wealthy countries in Asia and Western Europe. Substandard health insurance leading to difficult to obtain health care and the rampant use of pesticides and antibiotics in our food source could be factors for this.

As a result, the UBS survey showed that wealthy Americans were more pessimistic about their chances of living to 100. Only 30% of rich Americans expect to live to 100. Americans are also the most worried about rising health care costs and they are also the least likely to make adjustments to finance and savings to fund a longer life.

How Willis McGahee Made Millions By Betting On Himself

$

Heading into the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, Willis McGahee was one of the top players in college football. He had 2,108 all-purpose yards and 27 touchdowns during his redshirt sophomore year, helping lead the Miami Hurricanes to an undefeated season and a shot at a championship.

But in one fell swoop, everything seemed to come crashing down. McGahee caught a screen pass from quarterback Ken Dorsey at the beginning of the fourth quarter and was immediately tackled. The tackle bent his left knee backward, tearing his ACL, MCL, and PCL.

McGahee's injury was so gruesome that it required multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation. However, he was determined to play again.

In fact, he was confident enough to forego an insurance policy he had taken out before the Fiesta Bowl. That policy would have paid him $2.5 million to never play again.

Getty Images

Instead, McGahee entered the NFL Draft. Considered an easy top-five pick prior to his injury, he fell several spots in the draft. The Buffalo Bills selected him with the 23rd pick of the first round.

Though he sat out the entire 2003 season while he recovered, McGahee eventually got the last laugh. He had two consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons and finished just shy of 10,000 all-purpose yards for his career, totaling 9,813 yards and 70 touchdowns in 11 seasons with the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, and Cleveland Browns.

Those 11 years in the league paid McGahee more than $35 million. That's a 1300 percent increase in earnings by betting on himself.

McGahee could have simply given up when things got tough. Instead, he bet on himself and worked even harder to succeed. It paid off in spades.

Nobody, not teenagers or anyone else for that matter, gets into video games for the money. As hobbies go, it can be pretty expensive, between the cost of the console and/or computer, plus the price of individual games. But a lucky few teenage gamers out there are in fact getting rich playing, and in some cases making their own video games, and the BBC recently looked at a few and explained how it happens.

Andrew Bereza is one such teenager, an eighteen-year-old college student who created Miner's Haven and Azure Mines for children's game creation platform Roblox, games that earn him a lot more than a typical college student usually does:

"While I'm not in the annual millions like a couple of my colleagues have recently hit, I've been steadily earning six figures every year since I started."

Roblox is just one platform where young game designers can peddle their wares online, the App Store and Steam are two others. But designing and selling games isn't the only way to make big money in the video game world. There's also a lot of money out there for people who merely play video games, streaming the gameplay online on live video streaming platforms like Twitch – which was designed specifically for live video game streams. Elspeth Eastman is one such game streamer, who told the BBC she has to do a lot more than just play games to earn her pay and keep her more than 100,000 Twitch subscribers entertained:

"Right now, I'm sitting in a room that's 90% wires and computers. It's absolutely your own business. You have to do everything at once: you're the lights guy, and you're also the person on stage."

Then, of course, there's the simple business of earning money playing video games without actually having to entertain anyone. Take Sumail Hassan, who holds the record for being the youngest person to win $1 million in video game prize money at 16 years old, back in 2015. But even though such a thing is possible unlike only a few years ago, the co-founder of the University of Utah's entertainment arts and engineering (read: video game) department points out that the odds aren't exactly in your favor as a competitive video game warrior, by comparing it to the music industry:

"There are probably more people working in the industry supporting music rather than making money as musicians. It's easier to get a job at the music store tuning guitars than opening for a band on stage."

Still, you never know.
