Jim Varney was born in Lexington, Kentucky, US on June 15, 1949. Jim is most widely known for his interpretation of Ernest P. Worrell which he played in several Ernest TV commercial campaigns and movies. His catchphrase "KnoWhutIMean, Vern" went viral nationally almost the moment he uttered it. John was the fourth child and only boy of Louise and James Varney. His mother discovered his passion for performing as she observed that little Jim would impersonate the cartoon characters he saw on his black-and-white television. Thus, she enrolled him in the theater when he was eight. His interest in acting grew in his teenage years. When he was 15, he played Ebeneezer Scrooge in a local theater and began acting professionally at the age of 17. At the time, he was mainly performing at night clubs and coffee houses. Jim started his on-screen career appearing in TV Commercials in 1980. His first commercial featured the Ernest character which would be used in a series of subsequent ads. Actually, the Ernest character became so popular that it was added to a TV series: "Hey Vern, it´s Ernest". Disney also went on to acquire the character and from then on, a series of Ernest began with 1987′s "Ernest goes to Camp", giving Jim worldwide fame and a number of accolades. Jim both married and divorced twice. He was a heavy smoker which caused him a lung cancer. After a series of chemo treatments, Jim died in White House, Tenessee on February 10, 2000 at the age of 50.
