Former 'American Idol' Host Brian Dunkleman Is Now Driving For Uber To Make Ends Meet

There's no shame in honest work like driving for Uber or other rideshare apps, but it can still come as a surprise when you catch a ride in Los Angeles and see someone you recognize from TV in the driver's seat. That scenario has probably played out a few times in Hollywood, but now it's also playing out in newspapers and entertainment websites following TMZ's report that former American Idol host Brian Dunkleman is now driving Uber to make ends meet, according to documents pertaining to the comedian's divorce from wife Kalea Dunkleman.

In the documents, Dunkleman lists his occupation as "Uber driver," and claims an income of roughly $800 a week, having started the job back in March of 2016. The docs also claim a sum of about $2,000 in his checking account and expenses of about $1,605 a month (with $1,500 of that going towards rent).

The divorce has been a long and contentious one stretching back two years, with both sides claiming physical and emotional abuse and endangerment to their five-year-old son Jackson, who lives with Dad "half the week." In a statement responding to news of his new lot in life, Dunkleman says on Twitter that he quit show business for the sake of his son:

"I chose to stop doing standup comedy and started driving an Uber so I could be there for my son as much as he needed after our life as we knew it was destroyed."

The arc from being the host of one of the most popular TV shows in recent memory to driving Uber is especially surprising when you remember that Dunkleman quit the show after its first season on his own volition, citing his dissatisfaction with the show's famously mean tone embodied by judge Simon Cowell. He has also publicly expressed regret at his decision in the past.

Here's How Some Of Billionaire Hansjörg Wyss' $1 Billion To Save The Planet Is Being Spent

Remember Hansjörg Wyss? He's the Swiss billionaire who recently announced an ambitious plan to spend $1 billion on the preservation of the planet's land, water, and wildlife therein. Now, Wyss' foundation and the Wyss Campaign for Nature has announced how some of that billion dollars to preserve 30 percent of Earth's oceans and wildlands by 2030 is being spent.

Greg Zimmerman is the Wyss Campaign for Nature's communications director, and recently spoke to Business Insider about how the foundation's plans are based around local priorities rather than any centralized edicts from on high:

"What we found over the years is that if it's not being driven by folks who live in these communities, if there's not local buy-in, then you're going to have a political problem, you're going to have a problem of these places [not] being protected permanently."

Craig Barritt/Getty Images

Some of those very local organizations have already gotten a thin wedge of Wyss' billion dollar pledge, and Zimmerman highlights $66 million in giving to local preservation orgs in 2018 alone. There's the Dehcho First Nations in Canada, which is receiving a $750,000 grant to manage the 3.5-million-acre Edéhzhíe National Wildlife Area in the Northwest Territories. Then there's Aves Argentinas, the oldest conservation organization in Argentina, which now has $5.8 million in additional funds to spend on a 1.5 million acre national park including 65,000 acres of wetlands. And Fundación Flora y Fauna is another environmental organization in Argentina that's getting $22 million towards another national park, this one in the country's Tucumán Province.

And that's just, so to speak, the tip of the iceberg, with at least six other organizations also getting sizable grants for their own conservation projects across the globe. In addition to its conservation efforts, the Wyss Foundation is reportedly also embarking on an extensive awareness campaign in advance of the 2020 UN Convention on Biological Diversity, as a way to convince governments to devote more resources towards environmental conservation.

F1 Driver Lewis Hamilton Just Quietly Bought His SECOND $40 Million Manhattan Apartment

Lewis Hamilton is one of those guys who could be sitting at the table next to me in a restaurant and I'd be wracking my brain to figure out how I knew him. Was he a celebrity? Wasn't he in that show I just binged on Netflix or something? Did we go to college together? Does he go to my gym? It would drive me insane, and I'm not sure I'd ever land on the correct answer. And that's the beauty of being an Formula 1 racing star. You're one of the most famous and highest-paid celebrities on the planet, but in the US, you can probably go to dinner and a movie in a major city without being noticed. Meanwhile, if he walks down the block in any European city, a parade of gawkers trails closely behind.

That might explain why Lewis is planting some seriously expensive and impressive real estate roots in the United States.

And btw, for American readers who aren't totally familiar with the 34-year-old Lewis, he's one of the most successful and popular Formula 1 drivers on the planet. He won his fifth F1 title last year in Mexico. He is only one of three drivers in history to win that many titles. In 2015 he signed a new contract with Mercedes-AMG that pays him $44 million per year. With other endorsements, Lewis earns $50 million ever year. We currently estimate Lewis Hamilton's net worth at $285 million.

Mark Thompson/Getty Images

The Wall Street Journal was first to report that Lewis just closed on a penthouse apartment in New York City. The purchase price? $40.7 million. The 6,500 square-foot apartment (not including 3,000 square feet of outdoor space) is located at 70 Vestry Street in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan. Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen also own a unit in the same building. When not enjoying unobstructed views of the Hudson River from their ridiculous homes, residents can enjoy the building's 82-foot-long pool, fitness center, library and squash courts.

And if spending $40.7 million for a single Manhattan apartment wasn't impressive enough, get this:

Lewis' recent real estate purchase comes less than two years after he spent $43.991 million to buy a different Manhattan penthouse just a few blocks away at 443 Greenwhich Street. So all-in, Mr. Hamilton now owns $84.691 million worth of NYC real estate. FYI, his annual property tax bill alone for the two properties will be $680,000. So he'll have to set aside $1.4 million ever year, pre-tax, just to cover that bill. I guess that's easy to do when you make $50 million per year.

Below is a video of the penthouse Lewis bought back in March 2017 for $43.991 million. Check it out. It's insane:

Former President Of Mexico Allegedly Took $100 Million Bribe From El Chapo

$

The infamous drug kingpin El Chapo evaded authorities for eons. He escaped from jail a number of times. Watching this from north of the border was somewhat amusing. Were the Mexican authorities that bumbling or was El Chapo that cunning? It turns out, he had $100 million reasons not to fear Mexican authorities. During the El Chapo trial taking place in New York City right now, it has been revealed that the former president of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, allegedly took a $100 million bribe from Joaquin Guzman Loera, aka El Chapo.

The bribe was revealed in testimony from Alex Cifuentes Villa, a Columbian drug lord who worked with El Chapo as his right hand man from 2007 to 2013 and spent two years hiding from authorities with him in the Mexican mountains. One of El Chapo's attorneys, Jeffrey Lichtman, asked Cifuentes:

"Mr. Guzmán paid a bribe of $100 million to President Peña Nieto?"

"Yes," Cifuentes said.

Peña Nieto was president of Mexico from 2012 to 2018. Cifuentes testified that Peña Nieto reportedly reached out to El Chapo when he was first elected president in 2012. Cifuentes said he requested $250 million from El Chapo in exchange for calling off the nationwide manhunt for him. El Chapo made a counteroffer of $100 million, which the president allegedly accepted. As a result, El Chapo would not have to stay in hiding.

The testimony about Peña Nieto and the bribe is the most explosive allegation to date in the ongoing trial. If it is proven true, it means that the corruption by drug cartels has reached the highest level of Mexican politics.

Hector Vivas/Getty Images

Cifuentes also testified that on at least two occasions, El Chapo gave the Mexican military between $10 million and $12 million to "either kill or capture" known associates of the Beltran-Leyva brothers, whom El Chapo was at war with. Cifuentes also testified that the Mexican federal police not only looked the other way in terms of drug trafficking, but sometimes also took part in it. Once, he claimed, traffickers gave the police photos of a number of suitcases packed with cocaine that were traveling by plane from Argentina to Mexico. The police grabbed the bags at baggage claim and sold the drugs themselves.

Cifuentes is serving time for drug trafficking and his role in El Chapo's cartel. He was arrested in Mexico in 2013 and was extradited to the United States where he pleaded guilty to drug trafficking in a deal with prosecutors. During his lengthy testimony, he has admitted to a stunning number of crimes. He admitted to hatching a failed murder plot with the Hell's Angels in Canada. He also admitted to buying plastic explosives from the widow of a Honduran drug trafficker. He paid an Ecuadorian judge $500,000 to throw out the case of a military officer accused of working with El Chapo's cartel. Oh, and he also admitted that he later kidnapped that same officer when it turned out he was cheating El Chapo.

According to his 2014 wealth disclosure, Peña Nieto listed a total net worth of 45 million pesos and an income of 3.4 million pesos. At the time, those values were worth the same as $3.3 million USD and $180,000, respectively. His main assets included four houses, an apartment, land, art, coins, and jewelry.

Peña Nieto immediately rejected the accusation, calling it "absolutely false and reckless."
