R. Kelly's Net Worth Is Way Lower Than You'd Assume

By now you've probably heard about the six-part docuseries about R. Kelly debuted on Lifetime called "Surviving R. Kelly". The show features interviews with several of Kelly's former girlfriends, his ex-wife and celebrities who detail the artist's alleged acts of sexual misconduct. The series revisits allegations that range from predatory behavior to pedophilia dating back nearly two decades. Mr. Kelly's lawyers tried unsuccessfully to prevent Lifetime from airing the show, claiming it is full of lies and potential defamation. Lifetime ignored the threat. Over the last few weeks, the show has caused incalculable damage to R. Kelly's career.

One big question people have been asking a bunch over the last two weeks (based on our internal traffic stats) is what is R. Kelly's net worth right now? Here's a guy who has been the driving force behind millions of albums and single sales. He's an incredibly successful songwriter and producer. He's been a part of massively successful world tours. Despite all these allegations and charges, surely he is extremely rich today, right? Well… not so fast. Let's dive into what we know.

Michael Loccisano/Getty Images

Let's start with some basic backstory. Robert Sylvester Kelly was born on January 8, 1967 in Chicago. He earned his big break when he won a $100,000 prize on the television talent show Big Break. Kelly signed with Jive Records in 1991 and released the album "Born into the 90s" with his group Public Announcement in 1993. Soon after, he released his solo debut "12 Play", which was eventually certified six times platinum. At the same time, he began a career producing records for others, including the debut album of the teenage pop singer Aaliyah. In 1995, his album "R. Kelly" sold four million copies. Soon after, his single "I Believe I Can Fly" topped the charts and won three Grammy Awards. Kelly released a series of multi-platinum albums in the 2000s, as well as the multi-part hip-hop opera Trapped in the Closet, which he released to radio stations in short portions.

As of this writing, Kelly has has released 17 studio albums, five compilation albums and five collaboration albums. In addition to his three Grammys, Kelly has won dozens of awards including several AMAs, a BET award and a many Billboard awards.

Kelly's solo work has sold 75 million albums and singles worldwide to date.

His producing career has been just as successful. Over the decades he has produced hundreds of songs for other artists, some of which became extremely successful. He has produced songs for Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Toni Braxton, The Isley Brothers, Mary J. Blige, Celine Dion, Luther Vandross… just to name a few.

Financial and Legal Problems:

Had R. Kelly never experienced any legal problems, his net worth would easily top $150-200 million today. Unfortunately, as of this writing we peg his net worth at just $1 million. Where'd the money go?

Over the years, Kelly has reportedly paid tens of millions of dollars to allegedly settle dozens of lawsuits made by women who claimed they were abused by the singer. His career has also been negatively impacted in a major way which has made it very difficult for him to earn a steady income. In 2012, it was revealed that Kelly owed $5 million in unpaid taxes dating back seven years. In 2013, he lost a house to foreclosure. In 2017, Kelly was forced to cancel an entire tour due to slow ticket sales after new allegations surfaced.

He also reportedly lost a large portion of his net worth, potentially as much as $40 million in property and assets, after divorcing Andrea Lee. Robert and Andrea were married from from 1996-2009, the most lucrative years of his career.

In July 2018, R. Kelly released a 19 minute song on Spotify where he addressed many of his allegations. On this song, Kelly claimed to be broke and needed to tour "just to pay rent". He also admited to owing the IRS $20 million at one time and being forced to borrow several million dollars from his label to pay bills. His financial struggles are compounded by the fact that he can't tour in many countries oversees because of his controversies and his U.S. tours are frequently blocked by protests. Furthermore, Spotify and other streaming services have stopped serving his songs in public playlists. On Spotify, individuals can still stream his songs from their own account, but his songs will not be recommended in public playlists like Discover Weekly or in other Spotify-curated playlists and radio channels.

In January 2019, Chicago building inspectors were granted the right to search R. Kelly's recording studio after receiving reports that the structure had undergone multiple renovations without permits. R. Kelly does not own the studio, he has rented it since 2017. The 8000 square-foot building was actually listed for sale at the time of the inspection for $4 million. At the same time, the building owner had filed a lawsuit against R. Kelly seeking unpaid rent. According to the lawsuit, Kelly's rent is $23,000 per month and he hasn't paid in seven months. He owed the landlord $167,000 at the time of the filing.

On January 14, R. Kelly's record label RCA/Sony revealed that they were putting all of his future music releases on hold, effectively freezing Kelly out of earning more money. He owes RCA/Sony two more albums on his most recent record contract. RCA/Sony has also refused to provide money for new music videos. The label is in a tough position because, as of this writing, Kelly has not been convicted of any crime. It would seem legally tricky to fire him and hold back money based on allegations. If his contract contains a "morals clause", there's a chance RCA/Sony could use that to extricate themselves from the deal.

What do you think of R. Kelly? Are you watching the Lifetime series?

Kanye West's Surprise Christmas Gift To Kim Kardashian: A $14M Miami Condo

One of the pleasures of being married can be splurging on holiday presents for your significant other. If that applied to you this holiday season, I hope you're not inclined to feel competitive towards other couples, because Kanye West is reported by TMZ to have spent some $14 MILLION on his present for wife Kim Kardashian: A luxurious beachfront condominium in Miami.

The 4,700 square foot unit is part of a building in Miami known as the "Billionaire Beach Bunker," a moniker well earned by attracting a murderer's row of ultrawealthy tenants. It's 18 stories high and comes equipped with the usual amenities like a gym, pool, and spa, and Kim's new place there has four bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, and a giant terrace. Inside the master suite, you'll find a master closet by Ornare as well as bathrooms from Permasteelisa, while the kitchen features Venetian Terrazzo flooring and Miele appliances. According to the listing from Alexander Team, the unit is located on the building's A-line, "the most coveted line in the building."

Alexander Team

Miami is a natural fit for both Kim and Kanye since Kim once did a reality show in the city (Kourtney & Kim Take Miami), while he's a regular attendee of the city's annual Art Basel shows. That's reportedly how Kanye was able to check out the condo on the sly, putting down his offer in secret and then surprising Kim with the gift on Christmas Day. And even at $14 million, the condo is something of a bargain, since it was originally listed at some $1.5 million higher.

Even if you're not Kim Kardashian, you can still take a full tour of her new condo, dubbed Faena House for developer Alan Faena, by taking a look at the video below:

The deal will be fully finalized sometime in January.

DeMar DeRozan Can Potentially Save $20 Million In Taxes Over The Next Three Years

DeMar DeRozan was the face of the Toronto Raptors for nearly a decade before being traded to the San Antonio Spurs this offseason. Though he lived in Toronto during the year, his main offseason residence was in his hometown of Compton, CA. He recently purchased a $15 million mansion in the Hidden Hills neighborhood.

But if DeRozan were to take up residence in the state of his new team, he could potentially save a ton of money.

DeRozan still has three years and $83 million left on his contract. In California, someone in his tax bracket would owe 13.30 percent of his income to state taxes. That's a little more than $11 million for just his individual income, or about $3.7 million per year.

California also has one of the highest sales tax rates in the country. DeRozan is saving money by not buying things in-state.

Sam Greenwood/Getty Images

Meanwhile, there's no state income tax in Texas, so DeRozan could save millions simply by changing his address.

But wait, there's more: professional athletes pay a "jock tax" for wherever they play games. Before being traded, half of DeRozan's NBA paychecks were affected by Canadian tax. That's 13.16 percent from Ontario taxes, the province in which Toronto is located.

In fact, for Canadian earners in the highest tax bracket, they pay 53 percent in taxes. That's more than half their earnings!

DeRozan now avoids those Ontario taxes by being in a Spurs uniform.

All told, between Federal, Canadian, and state taxes, DeRozan stands to save about $20 million in taxes over the next three years if he lives in Texas instead of California.

While it's unclear if he'll actually make the move, it's gotta be tempting. After all, it's not every day you can save $20 million, right?

Pablo Escobar's Brother Is Raising $50 Million To Impeach Trump

Donald Trump has racked up his share of enemies over the course of his presidency, but he may not have counted on the "legendary Latino hero" who's launching a crowdfunding campaign to help take him down. It's Pablo Escobar's brother Roberto, alias El Osito, who has launched a GoFundMe campaign to impeach Donald Trump.

GoFundMe has temporarily suspended the page on their site so they can figure out how exactly the money will be used, but the campaign itself (launched by Roberto as well as Escobar Inc. CEO Olaf Gustafsson) says it's seeking $50 million to pay for "intelligence research, lobby firms and lawyers" that will help find information and legally execute that information in a way that will ultimately lead to Trump's untimely exit from office, should everything go according to plan.

Alex Wong/Getty Images

Escobar doesn't just have big plans, though. He also says he is in possession of his own dirt on Trump that would interest Special Counsel Robert Mueller, although if that's true his reasons for needing $50 million for this project are unclear (and are perhaps part of the reason GoFundMe has removed the campaign from its site, for now). He sounds confident that he can get the job done, too:

"I am the brother of a Latino hero, I have eliminated many people from power… Trump will be impeached… We, the people will impeach Donald Trump with Pablo Escobar's family holding dirty secrets of President Trump, his family and associates."

It's all pretty outlandish, and presumably if the Escobars actually do have evidence pertinent to Mueller's investigation, he'll come to them to find out what they know, successful crowdfunding campaign or no. But for now, we just have to wait and see if GoFundMe is satisfied that the campaign is legit, and if so to see how it plays out.

Larry Ellison Reveals His $1 Billion Stake In Tesla

$

It was previously known that billionaire Oracle founder Larry Ellison was an investor in Tesla, fronted by his friend and fellow billionaire Elon Musk. And last month, Ellison joined the company's board of directors in an effort to improve oversight at Tesla. Now, recent regulatory filings as well as Ellison himself reveal that his stake in Tesla is worth an incredible $1 billion.

That's some three million Tesla shares, enough to make Ellison the second biggest Tesla investor behind Musk himself. The shares are owned by Ellison indirectly through his Lawrence J. Ellison Revocable Trust, and constitute a 1.75 percent stake.

A few months back, Ellison raised eyebrows with an impromptu defense of the beleaguered Musk at an Oracle analyst meeting, stating his disapproval of the way Musk is covered in the media:

"This guy [Musk] is landing rockets. You know, he's landing rockets on robot drone rafts in the ocean. And you're saying he doesn't know what he's doing. Well, who else is landing rockets? You ever land a rocket on a robot drone? Who are you?"

Kimberly White/Getty Images

Those feelings, as well as Ellison's admitted friendship with Musk, may make him an odd choice for oversight on the Tesla CEO, who came under fire by the SEC for making "false and misleading" public statements that negatively affected the company's stock. In response, Musk and Tesla had to pay $20 million in penalties to the SEC, as well as the addition of Ellison (and human resources specialist Kathleen Wilson-Thompson) to its board of directors.

Ellison's 3 million share stake in Tesla was confirmed in a regulatory filing less than two weeks after he joined the company's board in December of 2018. Tesla's stock climbed a bit after the announcement. And now it remains to be seen whether Ellison can reign in some of Musk's more eccentric tendencies (or his Twitter account).

Billy McFarland Net Worth

Billy McFarland net worth: Billy McFarland is an American convicted felon and former CEO who has a net worth of -$5 million. Billy McFarland is most famous for organizing the disastrous Fyre Festival which was supposed to be held in April 2017. He was born in 1991 in New York City and raised in Short Hills, New Jersey. He briefly studied at Bucknell University but dropped out, reportedly after just nine months. Upon leaving college he founded an ad network called Spling. In 2013 he founded a company called Magnises which aimed to develop an exclusive benefits credit card for millenials in big cities. The card promised to give holders access to special social clubs and other perks. The company was not ultimately successful.

Fyre Festival: Not long after founding the company, McFarland claimed in a letter sent to potential investors that the concert was already worth $90 million. He justified that valuation by alleging that the company had received millions of sponsorship dollars and ticket sales. Authorities would later prove that at that point the company had generated just $57,000 in revenue. The festival was advertised as a custom-built tropical paradise featuring glamorous models where guests would stay in luxury villas on a private island eating meals prepared by 5-star chefs. The event went viral when ticket holders arrived to find  a disorganized third world disaster. The luxury tents turned out to be disaster-relief tents that were shoddily put-together. The food turned out to be slices of cheese on bread served in Styrofoam containers. VIP tickets to the festival cost $49,000. The average day pass cost $450.

Billy and his partner Ja Rule were quickly sued for $100 million. In March 2018 Billy pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud in federal court. He admitted to using fake documents to secure 26 million in funding. He eventually agreed to forfeit more than $26 million and was sentenced to six years in prison.

The Fascinating Life And Wealth Of Charlie Chaplin Who Died With A Net Worth Equal To $415 Million

Charlie Chaplin is best known as a pioneer of the movie industry. He was a silent film star whose career spanned 75 years. Can you imagine the insane changes that took place not just in the movie business but in society during those 75 years? Chaplin was born in London on April 16, 1889 and died on Christmas Day 1977 in Switzerland. He grew up in poverty and began working at eight years old to help pitch in with his family. His parents were entertainers in a London music hall. His childhood was difficult as his father died when he was a toddler and his mother struggled financially. When he was 14, his mother was committed to a mental asylum. Chaplin began performing at an early age. He was watching a show starring his mother when her voice cracked. He was quickly shuffled onto the stage to finish the act. From there his performance career was off and running. He toured music halls and later worked as a stage actor and comedian. It wasn't long before his signature bowler hat, mustache, walking cane, and out-turned feet became his trademark. Charlie Chaplin lived a fascinating life and at the time of his death had an inflation adjusted net worth of $400 million.

Chaplin signed to the Fred Karno company in 1908. He was 19 years old. He made his first film Making a Living, in 1914. Over the next several years, Chaplin became a big star. Chaplin refined his character Charlie the Tramp and signed with the Essanay company for $1,250 per week plus a $10,000 bonus in 1915. That bonus is about $250,000 adjusted for inflation. The following year he signed with another company for $10,000 a week and a $150,000 bonus. Under that contract, Chaplin was required to make 12 films a year, and he had creative control over those films. In 1918, he signed with First National for $1 million for eight films. In 1919 he co-founded United Artists with Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, and D.W. Griffith. This savvy move gave Chaplin control over every facet of his career. He was a global star by this point. His first hit with United Artists was The Kid in 1921.

During his career, Chaplin wrote, directed, produced, edited, acted in, and scored his own films. He directed a total of eleven feature films. He received an Honorary Academy Award in 1972. Chaplin was recognized as one of TIME Magazine's "100 Most Important People of the 20th Century" for his classic comedic appeal. The London Film Museum hosts a permanent exhibition in honor of Charlie Chaplin's life and work. More than a century after his film debut, his body of work and on screen personality are still known. However, it is his life outside of film that we find particularly interesting.

Chaplin was married four times. His wives were Mildred Harris, Lita Grey, Paulette Goddard, and Oona O'Neill.

In 1927, a court froze Charlie's assets as part of his ongoing divorce from Lita Chaplin. At the time his estate was valued at $16 million in 1927 dollars. That's the same as $215 million in today's dollars. He was ultimately ordered to pay Lita $1 million.

During the 1940s, Chaplin strayed from the broader comedy he was known for. He started making films that were more satirical in nature and that led to a decline in his popularity.

Chaplin met Oona O'Neill in 1942 when she was a 17-year-old debutante from Manhattan trying to make it as an actress in Hollywood. She was the daughter of  Nobel and Pulitzer-Prize-winning Irish-American playwright Eugene O'Neill. At the time, Chaplin was a 53-year-old womanizing Hollywood legend. He was in the midst of a nasty divorce from his third wife, actress Paulette Goddard and a paternity suit from another woman. When Oona turned 18 in 1943, she and Chaplin married. As you can imagine, people were skeptical about the marriage lasting due to the age difference. But it did last – for 34 years until Chaplin's death. Oona and Chaplin had eight kids. Their Beverly Hills estate was the social hub for the Hollywood set.

And then Senator Joseph McCarthy's House Un-American Activities Committee set their sights on Charlie Chaplin. In 1948, Chaplin's name appeared on the FBI's infamous Security Index. He was blacklisted in Hollywood alongside hundreds of other suspected communists. Chaplin was not a communist nor a communist sympathizer. When he testified before Senator McCarthy's committee, he said:

"I do not want to create any revolution. All I want to create is a few more films."

In 1952, while sailing aboard the Queen Elizabeth on their way back to his native England for the first time in more than 20 years, Chaplin received a telegram. It said that he would not be allowed to return to the United States unless he agreed to appear before an immigration official to answer to charges of political and moral turpitude. Basically, U.S. authorities thought he was a communist and an adulterer – two very bad things to be in 1950s America.

Chaplin, his wife and four children were on their way to London for the world premiere of his latest film. Like so many in Hollywood at the time, Chaplin was sick of being the target of communist allegations from Senator McCarthy during his notorious witch hunt. After receiving the telegram Chaplin decided he would not be going back to the United States. There was only one problem – his vast fortune was in the U.S. He also had more than a million dollars buried in his backyard in Beverly Hills. He turned to his wife, Oona, who was an American citizen to solve the problem.

Even though Chaplin's decision aboard the Queen Elizabeth seemed spontaneous, he had been planning for the possibility of leaving the U.S. for months. He made his wife a cosigner on all of his bank and financial accounts in the U.S. This enabled Oona to return to the U.S. later that year under the guise of visiting her sick mother. She was really in the U.S. to settle their affairs and pack up their home. This included picking up a shovel and going into her backyard.

When Chaplin earned his first million dollars in the U.S., he buried it in his yard under a tree. With the kind of poverty Chaplin came from, knowing that he had that kind of money within quick reach was comforting. Chaplin had told Oona to dig up the buried cash and turn it into $1,000 bills and sew them into the lining of her mink coat. She wore that mink coat on her return to England.

Charlie and Oona had settled in Switzerland after their decision not to return to the U.S. They lived there for the rest of their lives. Chaplin returned to the U.S. once, in 1972, to accept an honorary Oscar for his role in "making motion pictures the art form of this century." He was 82 years old and when he accepted his Academy Award, he received a 12 minute standing ovation, which remains the longest in the history of the Academy Awards.

The exact value of Charlie's estate when he died was difficult to nail down since it was held in Switzerland. However, when he died in 1977 it is known that he left at least $100 million to Oona. That's the same as $415 million after adjusting for inflation.
