Here Are The 29 Players Who Have Made $100M Or More In Their NFL Careers

$

Getting a spot on an NFL team is a good way to make a lot of money, but some may be surprised to learn that only 29 NFL players in history have reached or broken the $100 million career earnings barrier. Here they are:

Champ Bailey — $102.8 million

Had it not been for the $3 million roster bonus quarterback Champ Bailey brought home in 2010, he would have just missed making it onto this list.

Cam Newton — $104.7 million

Grant Halverson/Getty Images

Quarterback Cam Newton's most lucrative season (so far) came in 2015, when he made $24.0 million including his $15.5 million signing bonus.

Terrell Suggs — $105.2 million

Suggs' entire career up to this point, and the $105.2 million he's earned, have been with the Baltimore Ravens, but he'll soon be an unrestricted free agent with a desire to continue playing in the NFL.

Jason Peters — $105.7 million

Peters, on the other hand, has said he intends to finish his career with the Eagles following the 2019 season, when his contract will come to an end.

Gerald McCoy — $110.1 million

Gerald McCoy's contract with the Bucs has him with the team for three more seasons.

Calvin Johnson — $113.8 million

Johnson retired after the 2015 season due to issues with pain, in the process he had to do without the $67.7 million he would have made in the following four years of his contract.

Joe Thomas — $119.9 million

Besides his nearly $120 million in career earnings, Thomas is known for having never missed a game over the course of his 11 seasons in the NFL, a career which came to an end after the 2017 season.

Mario Williams — $120.4 million

Williams was a beneficiary of the kind of big rookie contracts for number 1 draft picks you don't see as much anymore, when his first signing with the Texans was a six year deal for $54 million – and that was only the beginning.

Jay Cutler — $122.2 million

Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images

Cutler pulled of the rare NFL feat of un-retirement following his exit from the league following the 2015 season, signing back on with the Dolphins to replaced injured QB Ryan Tannehill.

Darrelle Revis — $124.2 million

Revis is a true free agency success story, having avoided long-term contracts over the course of his career.

Michael Vick — $124.8 million

Vick would likely be ranked significantly higher on this list were it not for the dog-fighting bust that sunk two full seasons from his football career.

Tony Romo — $127.4 million

Romo retired in 2016 and is now enjoying the second phase of his career in the broadcast booth rather than on the field.

Sam Bradford — $129.7 million

Bradford's presence on this list can be partially attributed to the fact that he was the last number 1 draft pick to be drafted by an NFL team before the league imposed restrictions on rookie contracts.

Brett Favre — $137.8 million

Favre will always be known as a Green Bay Packer, but actually he made a lot more money in his time after with the Jets and the Vikings.

Ndamukong Suh — $138.7 million

Sug signed a six-year, $114.4 million contract with the Dolphins, but he ended up getting cut after three years and $60 million.

Alex Smith — $146.5 million

Smith is a veteran with 14 seasons under his belt, but his most lucrative contract was signed in 2018 – $40 million with a $27 million signing bonus included.

Joe Flacco — $147.8 million

Patrick Smith/Getty Images

Elite quarterback Joe Flacco has the career earnings to befit his elite status.

Larry Fitzgerald — $163.3 million

In addition to that hefty sum, Fitzgerald has seen 11 Pro Bowls, but no championship rings, over the course of his 14 NFL seasons.

Julius Peppers — $165.0 million

Peppers is 38 but he only recently signed a new contract with the Panthers for $5 million.

Carson Palmer — $174.1 million

Palmer's last season was in 2017, when he had the biggest cap hit ($24.1 million) after Joe Flacco's.

Matthew Stafford — $178.3 million

When you count the massive $50 million signing bonus, Stafford's five year contract with the Lions has the highest annual salary of anyone in the NFL at an average of $27 million a year.

Matt Ryan — $178.7 million

Matt Ryan Earning His Paycheck

Ryan signed a $150 million contract extension in May of this year with a guarantee totaling $100 million — the biggest such guarantee in the league.

Ben Roethlisberger — $187.3 million

Roethlisberger's most lucrative season so far has been 2015, during which he brought home a $31 million signing bonus.

Philip Rivers — $202.9 million

After Rivers' surprise lucrative contract extension with the Chargers in 2015, he made headlines for purchasing a $200,000 deluxe SUV complete with a film room in the back.

Aaron Rodgers — $204.0 million

Rodgers' current contract with the Packers has him locked in until the 2023 season, at which point his career earnings will be more than $100 million higher than they are here.

Tom Brady — $217.2 million

Maddie Meyer/Getty Images

That figure would reportedly be a lot higher were it not for the $60 million in "discount contracts" Brady has sacrificed in staying with the Patriots.

Drew Brees — $221.7 million

Brees is nearing the end of his NFL days at 38 years old but still his no public plans to retire. His contract with the Saints has him on the field at least through 2019.

Eli Manning — $235.3 million

If Eli Manning finishes out his contract and the 2019 season, his career earnings at $252.3 million will edge out his brother Peyton.

Peyton Manning — $248.7 million

Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

But right now, the NFL's biggest earner so far is Peyton Manning, and he still had another $19 million left on his Denver Broncos contract when he retired after the 2015 Super Bowl.

Ten Books That Changed Ten Billionaires' Lives

If you look at the most famous billionaires in the world, books tend to be an important part of many of their lives. CNBC recently rounded up ten of the most famous and tried to find the single book that they have said changed their lives the most (presumably for the best). Here are those ten books:

Warren Buffett – The Intelligent Investor

Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images

It figures that a book called "The Intelligent Investor" would be the pivotal book for Warren Buffett, himself famous for his mastery of the stock market. He has told the story about how he accidentally bought the book at 19, and upon devouring it he learned a "bedrock philosophy on investing that made sense," and the book's author Benjamin Graham went on to become Buffett's personal mentor as his investment career took off.

Oprah Winfrey – The Seat of the Soul

Oprah says that this self-help philosophical tome by Gary Zukav changed her entire outlook shortly into her television career, inspiring her to keep a "thread of truth" always present in episodes of her TV show.

Elon Musk – The Foundation Series

The defining book of Elon Musk's life isn't just one book, but a series of seven by scifi legend Isaac Asimov. He says the series was "fundamental to the creation of SpaceX," and that "[t]he lesson [he] drew from that is you should try to take the set of actions that are likely to prolong civilization, minimize the probability of a dark age and reduce the length of a dark age if there is one."

Richard Branson – Peter Pan

Rob Kim/Getty Images

Virgin founder Richard Branson read JM Barrie's seminal work of children's fiction when he himself was a child, and he says he's never been the same since: "I've drawn a lot of inspiration from the book … I've never really wanted to grow up and I've always wanted to fly."

Meg Whitman – Playing to Win: How Strategy Really Works

When Meg Whitman was the CEO of Hewlett-Packard she organized the entire company according to the principles of this corporate strategy book by A.G. Lafley. According to her, it guided her in virtually every aspect of business: "This notion of where to play, what countries, what market segments, what products, and where not to play because we can't do it profitably, has been a very good discipline."

Bill Gates – Factfulness

Bill Gates once took to his blog to describe Hans Rosling, Ola Rosling, and Anna Rosling Rönnlund's study of how humans tend to make decisions based on unconscious biases rather than available data as a "breakthrough," particularly in the way he thinks about wealth in his philanthropic work: "The framework Hans enunciates is one that took me decades of working in global development to create for myself, and I could have never expressed it in such a clear way. I'm going to try to use this model moving forward."

Mark Cuban – The Fountainhead

Mark Cuban first read Ayn Rand's novel about an architect who would rather blow up a building than see his designs compromised in any way. Fortunately for society, he doesn't seem to have taken the novel's perspective totally literally.

Peter Thiel – Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World

Thiel has said that this book by philosopher René Girard changed the way he viewed human behavior, and that the process of imitation is more central than many realize "not just in people around you, but in yourself."

Carlos Slim – Future Shock

YURI CORTEZ/AFP/Getty Images

The title may sound like that of a science fiction novel, but actually it's a 1970 book by Alvin and Heidi Toffler arguing that the rapid development of technology and the resultant societal changes were having a negative effect on the psyches of people living through them. Slim says the key lesson from the book for him was how to spot opportunity early.

Jack Dorsey – The Art Spirit

Realist painter Robert Henri's 1923 book about the importance of appreciating both art itself and the processes by which it's created left a big imprint on Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, who once said: "I've learned throughout my career how important the work is. How important not just the end product is, but the actual craft — doing the work, inventing within the work."

Alleged Pedophile Jeffrey Epstein Gets Out Of Sex Trafficking Charges Thanks To Labor Secretary

Back in the early 2000s, Jeffrey Epstein and his famous friends were having a blast. Businessmen, politicians, celebrities, and even academics were caught up in the hedonism of Epstein's life. Epstein was a giver, who freely shared his lavish lifestyle with his pals. He flew friends to his island in St. Thomas, threw decadent dinner parties at his Manhattan townhouse, and spared no expense or indulgence. His friends included Leslie Wexner of The Limited, Kevin Spacey, Prince Andrew, a group of Nobel Prize winning scientists, and Bill Clinton and Donald Trump.

As it turned out, Epstein was living a double life. Between the years 1998 and 2007, Epstein ran a perverted pyramid scheme of sorts where he paid underage girls about $200 per session to perform daily sexual massages. The girls he hired told police that Epstein instructed them to get undressed and he would then penetrate them.

Epstein was arrested in Palm Beach County, Florida in 2008. That same year, Epstein quietly paid out settlements to a number of victims who claimed the financier molested them on several occasions. Surely, Epstein hoped that would be the end of it. However, the girls kept coming out of the woodwork with the same story, again and again. So, he did what the very wealthy and very famous do in situations like this. He hired a dream team of star attorneys to – pardon the pun – get him off. In Epstein's case, his team of Gerald Lefcourt and Alan Dershowitz managed to get him a deal for limited jail time despite more than a decade of alleged serial sexual abuse and rape of an unknown number of girls. In the end he was found guilty of abusing more than 80 women.

Photo via Palm Beach County Sheriff's Department/Wikimedia Commons

Now, it is being reported that Labor Secretary R. Alexander Acosta reportedly helped Epstein cut a confidential non-prosecution agreement that shut down a federal investigation into a trans-Atlantic sex trafficking operation of underage girls.

The Miami Herald did an in-depth expose to uncover how Acosta – who was a prosecutor in Miami – made it possible for Epstein to face incredibly lenient charges and sentencing for sex-related crimes against minors. Epstein was:

"…accused of assembling a large, cult-like network of underage girls with the help of young female recruiters to coerce into havingsex acts behind the walls of his opulent waterfront mansion as often as three times a day, the town of Palm Beach Police found."

These crimes could have put Epstein in prison for the rest of his life. Instead, Acosta, who was the U.S. attorney handling the case, negotiated an extraordinary plea agreement that concealed the extent of Epstein's crimes and the sheer number of people involved. Acosta was personally involved in negotiating Epstein's non-prosecution agreement and he also allowed Epstein's attorneys a lot of leeway and freedom in dictating the terms of that agreement.

The agreement that emerged from that case had Epstein charged with a single count of soliciting a minor. He was sentenced to 18 months in a Palm Beach jail. During that time, he was allowed to leave six days a week for "work release." He served 13 months of his sentence. He has been a free man, albeit with the tag of sex offender tied to him for life, since 2009. The agreement also basically shot down an ongoing FBI investigation into whether there were more victims and other powerful people who took part in Epstein's sex crimes. Epstein and the women he hired to lure minors to his mansion for sex parties received immunity from prosecution.

The fact is that Acosta seemed to go to great lengths to grant the wishes of Epstein's legal team. Acosta explained his lenient handling of Epstein's case in 2011. He said that he was heavily pressured by Epstein's hard hitting legal team of Jay Lefkowitz, Alan Dershowitz, Roy Black, Kenneth Starr, Jack Goldberger, Gerald Lefcourt, and former U.S. Attorney Guy Lewis.

Epstein also likely benefited from having influential friends including Bill Clinton and Donald Trump. When it was revealed that Bill Clinton was a fairly frequent passenger on Epstein's private jet – flying at least 26 times from 2001 to 2003 according to the flight logs – everyone expected Donald Trump to run with that news.

Except that during the presidential campaign, a woman filed a lawsuit alleging that both Epstein and Donald Trump repeatedly raped her at a series of sex parties. The woman says she attended several parties at Epstein's mansion, and had sexual contact with Donald Trump at four of them. The fourth and final time she attended a party with Trump, she alleges he tied her to a bed, raped her, then beat her and threatened to kill her and her family if she told a soul. She was 13 years old at the time.

The Clintons have not addressed their affiliation with Epstein. Trump has denied the claims against him and said he barely knew Epstein, however a quick search of New York media in the 90s will show you his comings-and-goings at Epstein's Upper East Side home – but denial is what one does in these cases, right?

Acosta's duties as labor secretary include overseeing human trafficking and international child labor laws.

The World's Most Expensive Whisky Just Sold For $1.5 Million

$

When selecting a bottle of whisky, it's important to consider multiple factors, from flavor, to vintage, to aroma, to price. The winning bidder at a recent Christie's auction must have been satisfied with all the above, because they paid more than $1.5 million for a single bottle of 1926 Macallan.

The new record holder for the world's most expensive whisky came in a special edition bottle hand-painted by Irish artist Michael Dillon, making it one of a kind in an already limited edition of 12 bottles put out by the Macallan Distillery in 1986, after an ageing process of six decades. CNN reports that Dillon was one of three artists commissioned to design bottles for the vintage – the other two were Italian painter Valerio Adami and Peter Blake, best known as the man behind the famous cover of The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hears Club Band.

Tim Triptree is Christie's International Director of Wine, and his purview evidently extends to whisky as well, because he had plenty to say about this particular specimen:

"The Macallan were unsure that this bottle still existed… It was last seen at Fortnum & Mason in London in 1999—and it is quite excited that the buyer has kept hold of it."

Triptree also spoke on what the $1.53 bottle of whisky would actually taste like if its owner decided to actually open the bottle and drink it:

"It's going to be incredibly complex… The flavors are going to be so concentrated, and it's going to have so many aromas, that each time you get to the glass I'm sure you would be smelling and tasting something different."

Given that the bottle is now estimated to be worth about $90,000 per pour, variety is probably a good thing.

ANDY BUCHANAN/AFP/Getty Images

The sale broke the record set only last month, when another 1926 Macallan (pictured above) sold for $1.1 million.

The Guy Sitting In Pitch-Black Solitary Confinement For 30 Days Quit Last Night… But He's Not Walking Away Empty-Handed

$

A few days ago we wrote a story about a very unusual bet that was underway in Las Vegas. The premise of the bet was that a guy named Rich Alati was challenged to sit alone in pitch-black darkness for 30 days straight. If he pulled it off his friend, fellow professional poker player Rory Young, would pay him $100,000.

Alati accepted the bet.

On November 21st he entered a room in an undisclosed Vegas location. The room contained a mattress, a toilet, a refrigerator, bathtub and a shower. The room would be pitch-black 24 hours a day. Even the light bulbs in the fridge were removed. Total darkness and isolation. No electronics. No light-emitting devices. No drugs or alcohol. No communication with friends and family.

On the plus side, Alati would be given any food he wanted. But! To keep him confused, food would be delivered at odd intervals so he could not use his meals to keep track of days or time.

With all of that in mind, how long could you last? Think you could make it the full 30 days to receive $100,000? If not, how much would it take?

MICHAEL BUHOLZER/AFP/Getty Images

As we mentioned previously, Rich entered the dark room on November 21st. And last night he called it quits. He made it 20 full days in the dark room which is longer than I expected and way longer than I would have lasted.

The good news is he is not walking away empty handed. Rory actually intervened last night and offered Rich an early buyout option.

For making it 20 days, Rory agreed to pay Rich $62,000.

Probably a pretty good deal on both sides. For Rich, he gets nearly two-thirds of his money while also ending the nightmare. For Rory, it certainly seems like Rich was going to attempt to last the full 30 days. So he may have just saved himself $38k.

A Thousand-Year-Old Chinese Scroll Just Sold For $59 Million

$

Chinese artist Su Shi's work dates back to the 11th century, and in some quarters he has been referred to as "the Chinese da Vinci." The artist has only two surviving scrolls to his name, and at a recent auction at Sotheby's Hong Kong one of those two scrolls, entitled Wood and Rock, sold for $59.2 million.

In point of fact, that may sound like a lot of money for a scroll, but it actually fell short of expectations some had for its value, with some speculating that the sum is further evidence of the effect of various economic and political factors on a fine art market in China that is beginning to cool down.

That may be partially due to Christie's pulling out all the stops in promoting the piece, when in press materials before the auction they referred to as "one of the most important Chinese artworks ever offered at auction." Kim Yu is the International Senior Specialist in Chinese Paintings at Christie's, and she elaborated about the work's significance:

"Wood and Rock is tremendously moving. The Northern Song was the golden era of Chinese painting, and for Su Shi the act of painting was an exploration of the self. This painting, with its relaxed and elegant charm, began an aesthetic revolution, which led to the development of later literati painting."

PHILIP FONG/AFP/Getty Images

Wood and Rock's sale price of $59.2 million was an in-house record for the Sotheby's auction house, being the highest price they've gotten in Asia for a single work, and did in fact exceed its pre-sale estimate by some $8 million, but it reportedly still fell short of the record for an auction sale price on a work of Chinese painting or calligraphy.

In any event, the Wood and Rock scroll is now the property of an anonymous buyer who was one of only three bidders to put down the $20 million deposit necessary to bid on the work, a privilege symbolized by special gold paddles.

More Details Of The Rape Allegations Against Billionaire Richard Liu Surface. Could Criminal Charges Be Filed Soon?

On a Thursday night in late August, a group gathered at the Origami sushi restaurant in Minneapolis. One of the guests, a 21-year-old female undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota, was there under the impression that the dinner was in honor of volunteers. Instead, she found herself surrounded by more than a dozen male Chinese executives who were attendees of a doctoral program for which she had been volunteering.

One of those men was a Chinese billionaire she'd met that week named Charlie Yao. Charlie was the person who invited her to dinner. Yao asked her to sit next to Richard Liu, the CEO of e-commerce giant JD.com and one of the wealthiest men in China. Her male guest was seated at another table with the assistants of the executives.

By the next morning, the young woman alleged that she was raped by Liu in her apartment. Liu has denied the charges. Now documents, the students statement to the police, and her WeChat messages to a friend are shedding more light on just what happened on the night of August 30th and what role Charlie Yao played in the events.

Liu had been in Minneapolis taking part in a doctoral program run by the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota and Tsinghua University in China. The program is geared towards successful Chinese entrepreneurs. Most of the coursework takes place in Beijing. To finish the program there is a residential component in Minnesota. Charlie Yao, Chairman of Shenzhen's Jumbo Sheen Enterprises Group, an equity investment fund management group was also part of the program.

Andrew Burton/Getty Images

The female accuser is the volunteer coordinator of organized outings for the members of the program. She met Yao earlier in the and reportedly offered her a job at his company after graduation. Liu asked Yao to make sure she attended the dinner.

According to the female student's WeChat messages and her statement to the police, the people at the dinner drank copious amounts of alcohol. In fact, two assistants were sent out on two wine runs that night. In all, they bought 32 bottles of wine. Wine flowed freely that night. From the student's perspective, she felt like she was being "forced" to drink alcohol. She told a friend in a WeChat conversation: "Why didn't one of these wealthy older CEOs act like a mature CEO and protect her, rather than culturally coerce her to drink?"

The female student's friend had to leave the dinner to attend another event half an hour away. When the evening's festivities were over, she left with Liu in his limousine and went to another location. In the back of the limo, he tried to kiss her and pull off her clothes. In her statement she said she told him: "You have wife, and you have kids. Don't do this, I don't want to do this." She asked him to take her back to her apartment a number of times before he actually did.

When they arrived at her apartment, she got out of the car, and so did Liu, who told the driver and his assistant to wait in the car. Once they were inside he again tried to take her clothes off and throw her on the bed. She was able to get away from him briefly and told him no several times. Liu then pressured her to take a shower with him. When she said no, he attempted to pull her into the shower with him. When he left the shower and walked into her bedroom, she locked the bathroom door and changed into dry clothes. When she exited the bathroom, Liu was naked on her bed. He refused to leave. Eventually, he threw her on the bed and held her shoulders so that she could not move. Then he forced himself on her and raped her.

Liu was arrested on the night of August 31st and held for about 17 hours before being released with no charges filed against him. He returned to China almost immediately.

She kept her sheets as evidence.

In September, the Minneapolis Police Department finished its investigation and turned the case over to the Hennepin County Attorney's office prosecutors. Those prosecutors are now trying to determine whether to file criminal charges against Liu. In a civil case, the plaintiff needs to only show it's more likely than not that the accused committed the crime. However, in a criminal case, prosecutors need to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

JD.com's investors have taken notice of the international scandal. The company's stock has dropped 33% since the end of August.

Urban Meyer Is Retiring And Taking $39 Million With Him – But It Could Have Been Even More

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer announced he's retiring at the end of this football season. He'll coach one more game for the Buckeyes, the Rose Bowl against Washington. He's going to leave having made a ton of money.

Meyer, who's being replaced by Buckeyes offensive coordinator Ryan Day, has made about $39 million in seven seasons at Ohio State. The school potentially could have owed him a lot more, as well.

Meyer lost out on more than $570,000 earlier this season as part of a three-game suspension. Ohio State suspended Meyer for his handling of domestic violence allegations against former wide receivers coach Zach Smith. Day served as acting head coach during those three games.

After reports came out that Meyer knew about Smith's spousal abuse allegations prior to Smith's firing, an independent investigative panel reviewed all the evidence. Meyer received his three-game suspension, though the investigation absolved him of language that could terminate his contract.

Had Ohio State decided to fire Meyer, they would have had to pay him an additional $38 million. In that case, the firing would be without cause.

But Meyer retiring instead of being fired works out nicely for the university. They don't owe him any money besides what they've already paid him.

We may still see Meyer on the sidelines at another university or even at the pro level. But for now, he'll coach one more game and then ride off into the sunset – with plenty of money in his pocket.
