Instead Of Drew Brees, The Miami Dolphins Drafted A Quarterback Who Passed For Zero Career Yards

Drew Brees made history in Week 5 of the NFL season – he's now thrown for more yards than any other quarterback. While Brees has enjoyed extended success with the San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints, the Miami Dolphins have missed out on him twice.

When Brees became a free agent in 2006, he chose the Saints over the Dolphins. And in the 2001 draft, the Dolphins considered Brees, but ultimately chose CB Jamar Fletcher with the No. 26 pick. The team did grab a quarterback: Josh Heupel.

Despite recommendations from the Dolphins scout team to take Brees, Miami thought it had a solid quarterback in Jay Fiedler. The team also believed it was getting equal value with Heupel.

Brees currently has 72,103 yards (and counting). Heupel threw for exactly zero yards in his NFL career before pursuing coaching, instead.

Counting his signing bonus, Brees made about $2.1 million his rookie season. Meanwhile, the Dolphins filed a grievance against Heupel to try and reclaim $83,000 paid in a signing bonus. The Dolphins claimed Heupel lied about a wrist injury before the NFL Draft.

Ironically, Heupel is now back in Florida. He left Missouri last winter to take the vacant job at UCF.

Meanwhile, Brees is continuing to set records. And the Dolphins are still looking for their franchise quarterback.

Here's How Much Supreme Court Justices Get Paid

The United States Supreme Court is in the news again, to a degree without recent precedent. Maybe during less heated moments you've found yourself idly wondering exactly how much the appointees to that prestigious body pull in over the course of those lifetime appointments. Luckily for you, you can find exactly how much Supreme Court justices have made in annual salary going all the way back to 1968 at the official website of the United States Courts.

There, you'll find that this year, the annual salary for a justice of the Supreme Court comes to $255,300, while Chief Justice (now John Roberts) earns a little more at $267,000. And, with the exceptions of larger raises that seem to happen from time to time, that salary gets a reliable bump of between $2,000 and $3,000 every year.

Zach Gibson/Getty Images

Of course, that doesn't include the rather generous benefits that Supreme Court justices are entitled to as federal employees. That includes the Federal Employee Health Benefits, which its website says is "the widest selection of health plans in the country." Then there's the retirement plan, which after 10 or 15 years of service (depending on their age at retirement) entitles them to an annual pension equal to whatever their highest annual salary was during their career.

If that doesn't have you contemplating a quick changeover to law school, there's also the lengthy break between July and October, when the Supreme Court isn't in session. It's during these months that Supreme Court justices historically do most of their traveling and supplement their income with teaching and speaking gigs. In 2015, for example, Clarence Thomas earned a reported sum of more than $27,000 for giving lectures during summer break at schools including Brigham Young University, Creighton University and George Washington University – and of course, they're expected to prepare for the Court's slate of cases in the fall during this period as well.

They may find time to write books while serving on the Court as well. Stephen Breyer earned some $45,000 in royalties for his 2016 book The Court and the World, while Sonia Sotomayor earned millions for her own much more lucrative book My Beloved World in 2013.

Ring Founder Rejects Shark Tank Offer, Goes On To Build Billion Dollar Business On His Own

Back in 2013, Ring founder Jamie Siminoff appeared on Shark Tank to pitch his video door bell. He walked away without a deal after rejecting what he thought was a weak offer from Kevin O'Leary. Five years later, Ring sold to Amazon for $1.1 billion and Siminoff is appearing as a judge on the season 10 premiere of Shark Tank.

Just four years ago, post Shark Tank appearance, Ring, which was then called DoorBot, was almost finished. The company was living on fumes. Siminoff got the idea for Ring, a cell phone connected doorbell after his wife complained that she couldn't hear the doorbell. He drained his bank account to produce the first shipment of 5,000 doorbells from a factory in Taiwan. One day at lunch in May 2013, Siminoff met someone who told him he should try out for Shark Tank. Siminoff immediately sent an email to the producer and got a call as he was driving home from lunch. He taped his segment four months later. The show aired in November 2013. Siminoff was seeking $700,000 for 10% equity in the company. Three of sharks turned the deal down. Kevin O'Leary offered Siminoff a $700,000 loan in exchange for 10% of sales until the loan was paid back and a 7% cut of all sales from that point on, plus 5% equity in the company. Siminoff turned that down. The publicity he garnered from his appearance on Shark Tank saved the company.

Photo via Flickr user Christopher Michel/Wikimedia Commons

After his appearance on Shark Tank, Ring had more than $1 million in sales in one month. However, the problem was, that early doorbell had poor picture quality, bad sound, and a WiFi connection that failed far too often. Ring had 323 negative reviews on Amazon. In response, Siminoff made personal house calls to 50 customers over the next nine months. He also answered every customer email himself. His personal email is on every box Ring ships. Until nine months ago, he was still making house calls to fix bugs and WiFi problems.

In March 2014, Siminoff entered into a deal with Foxconn to improve his cell phone connected doorbell. Foxconn is the Chinese company that builds iPhones. He collaborated with the company on a redesign. Foxconn extended him a line of credit to cover the first 30,000 doorbells at $100 each. At the same time, Siminoff was also trying to raise capital. Hamet Watt of Upfront Ventures became an investor in the company that was still called DoorBot. It was Watt that suggested Siminoff rename his company Ring. Siminoff paid $1 million to acquire the ring.com domain from a squatter.

Then Siminoff set out to get Ring into big box stores such as Best Buy, Home Depot, and Target. He started airing TV commercials. Richard Branson came on as an investor in 2015 after a visitor to his island used it to check on their front door from thousands of miles away on an island paradise. Branson whipped out his check book and pumped $28 million into Ring. Branson was actually one of several large investors who would soon poor $200 million into the company.

In 2016, Shaquille O'Neal signed on as Ring's pitchman in exchange for an equity stake in the company. In a recent TV spot, Shaq and Siminoff praise Vicki whose video from her Ring doorbell shows her chasing off an intruder while yelling "Get the f*** out of here!"

In fact, Siminoff has proof that Ring wards off burglars. In 2016, he teamed up with the LAPD to give away 40 doorbells in a middle class Los Angeles neighborhood that had a rash of home burglaries. Ring doorbells were installed in 10% of the homes in the neighborhood. Within six months, burglaries dropped by 55%.

As of 2017, Ring has a 97% share of the video doorbell sales market in the U.S. However, in 2018, about a half dozen copycat doorbells are hitting the market from companies like ADT, Google, and Amazon.  Google's Nest is expanding to offer home security devices, including a $229 video doorbell. In December 2017, Amazon bought Blink, which makes wireless home security cameras. The company was planning to sell a $99 video doorbell to compete with Ring. That $99 undercuts Ring's lowest priced product by $80. With the acquisition of Ring, one can assume that $99 doorbell has been shelved.

With the sale of Ring to Amazon, Siminoff cashed in big time. He owned an estimated 30% of the company, giving him a $300 million payday. Shaquille O'Neal also cashed in on Ring's sale.  Oh, and if one of the Sharks had accepted Siminoff's terms of 10% equity for a $700,000 investment, that investment would be worth around $180 million today.

What Is The $12 Billion Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Up To So Far?

$
0
0

Last October, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, announced that they would be selling up to 75 million shares of Facebook, worth more than $12 billion at the time, between then and March 2019 to fund the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. The overall goal of CZI is to cure disease. Not one specific disease – but all disease by the end of the century. Chan stopped practicing medicine last year to run CZI full time. Since the first of the year, Zuckerberg has sold another nearly 29 million shares to give more than $5.3 billion to CZI.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative has 250 employees, half of which come from the technology sector. As far as nonprofits go, CZI is still in its early days, however, it has been around long enough to have a handful of core ideas that it is beginning to test in the real world. The initiative was founded about two and a half years ago.

One CZI's missions is "supporting scientific research to cure, prevent and manage all diseases in our children's lifetime." Zuckerberg believes that we have a real chance of preventing, curing or managing most diseases in the next century, especially heart disease, cancer, strokes, neurodegenerative, and infectious diseases.

Adam Berry/Getty Images

CZI is one of the biggest investors in the Human Cell Atlas, which has an objective to map out every single cell in the human body. In doing so, that would create a new data set that could not be achieved by a single scientist.

Another one of CZI's projects is a $12.5 million effort to bring more engineering tools to the imaging field. Applications are currently being accepted. Once that period closes, 10 to 15 imaging scientists will be given funding for three to five years for research at imaging centers across the U.S.

A few other things CZI has accomplished:

The first donation was a $600 million investment in BioHub. BioHub is a project that brings together scientists and engineers from Stanford, Berkeley, and UC San Francisco to understand and treat disease.

CZI acquired a search engine that is working to help scientists find relative papers easier. It is called Meta.

CZI, in conjunction with New York's Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, is helping develop its bioRxiv service for biologists to share and search for scientific papers.

CZI is working with a startup called protocols.io, which is building a place for researchers in the life sciences field to share information about methods.

Most recently, CZI announced that it will provide a $150,000 grant and join an advisory group for ASAPbio – which aims to bring more transparency to life sciences communication.

CZI is attempting to figure out how to support scientific efforts that are already being worked on.  Chan said, "We believe that greater collaboration across science and technology is key to giving more people an equal shot at living healthy and prosperous lives. We're proud to play a role in making that happen."

CZI is a separate and distinct entity from Facebook. Zuckerberg and Chan are very involved in CZI, it is not a token philanthropic effort that they throw money at and forget. They are involved in meetings and in shaping the directions of efforts. Zuckerberg attends a number of meetings including the board meeting for Biohub, two vert involved sessions on the Human Cell Atlas each year, and he reviews some of the newer things CZI is getting involved in like criminal justice and affordable housing.

Although Zuckerberg is involved and attends meetings, Chan is the one who runs the show day to day at CZI. When she isn't traveling she works out of the CZI offices and makes herself accessible for questions or working through problems. She sits out in the open, so she can chat with employees rather than in an office.

It is easy for the scientists and engineers to get mired in the technology. But it is Chan and her background in medicine that grounds them and brings the human aspect to the forefront.

Woman Who Spent $21M On Jewelry, Wine Slapped With UK's New "Unexplained Wealth Orders"

Zamira Hajiyeva from Azerbaijan is the wife of former International Bank of Azerbaijan chairman, Jahangir Hajiyev, now serving a 15-year sentence in Azerbaijan for embezzlement and fraud. Hajiyeva, on the other hand, has been living large in London, and she is the first person to be hit with one of Britain's new Unexplained Wealth Orders, giving authorities the right to seize the assets of those who can't explain the source of their wealth.

According to the Associated Press, officials have targeted a golf course owned by Hajiyeva said to be worth $14 million, as well as a London home worth $15 million. The latter is adjacent to famous London retailer Harrods, where authorities say she has spent some $21 million on jewelry, wine, and other luxury goods. Those spending habits were presented to the court as evidence of her having an ill gotten fortune in connection with her husband's crimes, which is a necessary prerequisite to an Unexplained Wealth Order being issued.

James McCauley/Harrods via Getty Images

In Hajiyeva's statement to the High Court, she says that her wealth comes not from any shady dealings on the part of her husband, but rather his considerable financial savvy:

"My husband was in 2009 a man of substantial means. He was very well off when we married in 1997 and has accumulated capital and wealth since the early 1990s … As to the purchase of the property, this was husband's responsibility. I had no knowledge of any of the payments made to purchase the property, our family home, their source or any other details."

Hajiyeva has hired a high powered team of attorneys to help her dispute the orders and hang on to her assets. And in a statement, her lawyers stress that the orders do not "and should not be taken to imply any wrong-doing, whether on her part or that of her husband." Rather, they are "part of an investigative process, not a criminal procedure, and it does not involve the finding of any criminal offense."
