Why Do We Find "Frugal" Billionaires So Endearing And Appealing?

$
0

Warren Buffett still lives in the modest house he bought in the late 1950s for $31,500. Bill Gates wears a $10 watch. Mark Zuckerberg drives a VW GTI. Jeff Bezos drove a Honda Accord for years after becoming a billionaire. IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad bought his clothes at thrift stores and drove the same Volvo for 20 years before he died. There is something appealing about these stories. Perhaps it is a case of being able to relate to these enormously wealthy people in some small way. Or perhaps it is a case of justifying our purchases. If Mark Zuckerberg is happy with a modest car, why shouldn't we be?

The problem with this line of thinking is it creates a divide between so called good rich people and bad rich people. Good rich people don't flaunt their wealth. Frugality is one way people evaluate whether a rich person is morally good or morally bad. It is something we can wrap our minds around easier than the staggering balances in billionaire bank accounts. As a rule, frugality is praised, whether one is rich or not. It is a sign of self-control.

Alex Wong/Getty Images

Consider the opposite of frugality—the rich kids of Instagram—teens and 20-somethings who brag about and show off their families' wealth on social media. OrDan Bilzerian, "Instagram's Playboy King," another example of the bad rich, thanks to his seemingly never ending stream of photos that highlight a lifestyle filled with private jets, stacks of cash, yacht parties, expensive cars, and lavish parties.

The danger in thinking that frugal rich people are better than other rich people lies in what this idea hides. Sure, Mark Zuckerberg is well known for his jeans, t-shirt, and hoodie wardrobe, but his hoodies are not $15 Kmart specials. They are $2,000 cashmere hoodies.

What this line of thought also does is put these billionaires' extreme wealth into better focus. It makes it aspirational. In an interview with Time in 2017, Mark Cuban said that anyone who wants to become wealthy should save aggressively and not spent money on anything but the essentials.

"I did things like having five roommates and living off macaroni and cheese and I was very, very frugal. I had the worst possible car — those kinds of things."

This lends itself to the mindset that anyone who stays the course and saves enough money can be rich. The problem with this is that it ignores the societal issues that keep poor people poor in the first place. Being frugal is offered as a simple solution to a complicated issue.

Besides, YOLO and all of that. Do you really want to be so frugal that you deprive yourself of vacations and fun? You could get hit by a bus tomorrow.

Russian Billionaire Sues Sotheby's For $380 Million Over Alleged Price Fixing

$

Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev has spent more than $2 billion on works of art purchased from the Sotheby's auction house, by well known masters like Pablo Picasso, Gustav Klimt and Leonardo da Vinci. Paintings by figures like that are often described as priceless, but a new lawsuit filed by Rybolovlev against the auction house alleges quite the opposite, and claims that Sotheby's ripped him off by charging him too much for many of the 38 paintings, swindling him out of some $1 billion in the process.

As reported by The Telegraph, the lawsuit is the latest blow in what is described as a "long feud with a Swiss dealer" named Yves Bouvier, who Rybolovlev says swindled him by inflating the prices of several masterpieces while under his employ, chief among them Leonardo's Christ painting Salvator Mundi. Bouvier is the infamous backroom art dealer involved in the so-called "Bouvier affair," and is under investigation by Swiss authorities for fraud. At the center of this affair are the sales of Salvator Mundi, first by Bouvier for $75-80 million and then to Rybolovlev for $118 million. According to Rybolovlev's complaint, that kind of price inflation was business as usual for Sotheby's and Bouvier:

"[Sotheby's] knew the actual prices Bouvier paid to the sellers and the fraudulently inflated prices Bouvier induced Plaintiffs to pay to him."

VALERY HACHE/AFP/Getty Images

However, Sotheby's released a statement of its own, denying Rybolovlev's allegations and calling the lawsuit unnecessary and pointless:

"The false allegations that Mr Rybolovlev is making are already being litigated in the Swiss courts, which is the appropriate venue for this case."

Bouvier himself has also chimed in, claiming he was not in fact officially employed by Rybolovlev and was simply selling him paintings he had purchased on his own, and thus was under no obligation to keep the prices congruent.

Rybolovlev lucked out with Salvator Mundi, selling the painting for a huge profit at $450 million, but says he's sold many of his other paintings at a loss, presumably due to Sotheby's and Bouvier's price fixing efforts.

A $446 Million House Hits The Market In Hong Kong – And It Is Surprisingly Modest

$

Hong Kong's Peak neighborhood is exclusive and home to some pretty pricey estates. One recently went on the market for $446 million. If it sells for that, it could break the record for the most expensive home sold in Hong Kong. It may even be the most expensive house for sale in all of Asia. It has been on the market since April. Prior to being put up for sale, the home was available to rent.

Hong Kong is home to more ultra-wealthy people than any other city in the world. As a result, prices of real estate are increasing, especially in the luxury market. Hong Kong was named the prime luxury market in the world for the second year in a row by Christie's International Real Estate. The city had the first and second most expensive home sales of 2017. A property in the Peak neighborhood sold in January 2017 for $360 million to Yeung Kin-man, a technology billionaire. In March 2018, a buyer bought a home in the Peak for $178.4 million – that works out to $19,400 per square foot – making it the most expensive residential sale in Asia.

Photo via Christie's International Real Estate/Wikimedia Commons

However, this $446 million home could absolutely annihilate those previous records. The four bedroom, four bathroom home sits on a 7,725 square foot lot on Middle Gap Road, one of the most exclusive gated communities in Hong Kong. The home is surrounded by a dense forest with views of the peak above, the dramatic skyline of Hong Kong, and the sea below, depending on where you are in the house. The home was built in 1991 in the colonial style. It has a swimming pool and a chef's kitchen.

The house's neighborhood, the Peak, is short for Victoria Peak. It is one of the most expensive residential neighborhoods in not just Hong Kong, but the world. It is home to Chinese millionaires and billionaires, celebrities, bankers, business tycoons, and wealthy expatriates. Over the past decade, three of the streets in the neighborhood have claimed the title of the world's most expensive street. Alibaba's Jack Ma is rumored to have bought a home in the neighborhood in 2015 for $191 million.

The inventory of homes in the Peak is very limited. In fact, Hong Kong as a whole is in the middle of a serious housing crisis. Tens of thousands of people pay around $2000 a month to live in tiny homes that are literally the size of coffins. Part of the issue stems from the small amount of land Hong Kong actually has.

Hong Kong has been the least affordable housing market for eight years in a row.

Michael "The Situation" Sorrentino Gets 8 Months In Prison For Tax Evasion

Michael "The Situation" Sorrentino, famous from his stint on the once popular MTV reality show Jersey Shore, has been sentenced for his crimes related to tax evasion on some $9 million in income. The Associated Press reports that a federal judge recently hit Sorrentino with an eight month prison sentence for his tax evasion efforts.

Sorrentino pleaded guilty to one count of federal tax evasion, admitting to concealing his income from federal authorities in 2011 by making cash deposits under $10,000, so as to avoid triggering federal income reporting requirements.

Michael Loccisano/Getty Images

In his statement to U.S. District Judge Susan Wigenton, Sorrentino said that he was in the process of "overcoming my demons and putting my life back together" after years of problems with addiction to drugs and alcohol, and that "Today I'm a man that I should have been years ago." Wigenton reportedly responded by commending The Situation on the progress he's made, but clarifying that that doesn't excuse his actions:

"With celebrity comes responsibility. Part of the cost of making money is you have to pay taxes. We all have to."

The eight-month prison sentence is a classic compromise between the prosecutor, who was seeking 14 months in prison for Sorrentino, and his own attorneys, who were looking for a probation sentence. Now, he is free on bail until he has to report to begin his sentence, and as of this writing it hasn't yet been reported when that might be.

The Situation was sentenced shortly after his brother Marc, who also pleaded guilty to a similar charge, and got a stiffer two year sentence in the bargain. The two brothers' accountant Gregg Mark, who has also pleaded guilty to the tax evasion charge levied against him, is still awaiting his own sentence.

Sorrentino appeared on all six seasons of Jersey Shore, which ran between 2009 and 2012.

Nike And EA Express "Concern" Over Cristiano Ronaldo Rape Allegations

$

Football star Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the highest paid athletes in sports, with a lifetime contract reportedly worth $1 billion, with Nike alone. But that sponsorship as well as his contracts with other companies like EA Sports are in jeopardy following allegations against him by Kathryn Mayorga, who says Ronaldo raped her in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009.

Police are now investigating Mayoraga's allegations, and Nike and EA have both made public statements indicating that they are watching the results of that investigation closely. Here's Nike's statement:

"We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation."

Ronaldo has endorsement deals with a myriad of companies, including Heuer, Herbalife and American Tourister, but Nike and EA are the two biggest, and have correspondingly had the biggest response to the troubling news. For EA's part, they've removed Ronaldo's once ubiquitous image from much of their advertising and marketing materials, and released a statement of their own:

"We have seen the concerning report that details allegations against Cristiano Ronaldo. We are closely monitoring the situation, as we expect cover athletes and ambassadors to conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with EA's values."

Football club Juventus signed Ronaldo only last summer, and the team released its own statement supporting Ronaldo on Twitter:

"Ronaldo has shown in recent months his great professionalism and dedication, which is appreciated by everyone at Juventus … The events allegedly dating back to almost 10 years ago do not change this opinion, which is shared by anyone who has come into contact with this great champion."

Christopher Furlong/Getty Images

Ronaldo himself denies the allegations, again taking to Twitter to do so:

"I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in. Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense."

Obviously, it remains to be seen whether this accusation will damage Ronaldo in any way, or cost him any of his extremely lucrative endorsement contracts.

Sergei Studennikov Became An Alcohol Billionaire In Russia, Amid Government Crackdowns On Liquor

$
0
0

It's not one of the qualities that tends to get a lot of press in North America, but Russian president Vladimir Putin is a passionate opponent of alcohol in his country, with much of his political agenda over his 18 years as president going towards putting up barriers between sellers of alcohol and the Russian public. Which is why it's interesting, and surprising, that the country's newest billionaire, Sergei Studennikov, made his fortune in just that industry, as per a recent Bloomberg profile that describes him as an "ex bootlegger."

Studennikov's first discount liquor store was opened 12 years ago, located near the "gritty industrial hub" of Chelyabinsk. Today, Krasnoe & Beloe is the fastest growing retailer of any kind in Russia, with some 6,700 locations across the country. How has he managed to be so successful in such an unkind political and legal climate towards his business of choice? One factor is his Soviet-era savvy and a "knack for navigating complex rules."

Sean Gallup/Getty Images

Another factor is Krasnoe & Beloe's unusual business model, which Infoline chief Ivan Fedyakov says is "upending the whole supermarket industry":

"Alcohol has been the most profitable category for the largest food retailers, but Krasnoe & Beloe is disrupting the market. It's offering a wider range of beer, wine and spirits at lower prices and even taking on the grocery chains on their own turf by selling food."

Studennikov's fortunes don't just come from giving the people what they want in large varieties and low prices. He's also courted controversy for certain business practices that may be considered unethical:

"He drives a relentlessly hard bargain, with suppliers as well as his 100,000-plus employees. Former shop assistants, who are paid as little as 25,000 rubles ($380) a month in some regions, say they often had to pay for unsold inventory at the end of every month, a practice he's defended as motivational."

Despite his somewhat merciless business practices, Studennikov says he's not just in the liquor business for the money. He says he also wants to change what the Russian attitudes towards alcohol use, which he says trends toward drinking as a way to blot out the real world:

"Alcohol should be a flavor of life. Look at Italy and France, where people just enjoy wine and don't drink themselves to death."

Of course, Studennikov has made a ton of money in addition to whatever strides he has made towards guiding Russia towards a healthier attitude towards alcohol. He recently just made it into the billionaire sphere, where he seems perched right on the borderline of billionaire and not-quite-a-billionaire. In any case: He's doing very well.
