UFC President Dana White Says His Brand Is Now Worth $7 Billion, After ESPN Deal

$

UFC President Dana White is extremely optimistic about the financial value of the UFC brand. In a recent interview with motivational speaker Tony Robbins, White says that the value of UFC is almost twice that of what it was when it was sold to media company Endeavor in August of 2016 ($4.025 billion). As he put it:

"When you think about it we haven't even scratched the surface yet of how big this thing can be… We just did a TV deal with ESPN for $1.5 billion for five years. Now the company is worth $7 billion."

Ethan Miller/Getty Images

The full accuracy of White's claim hasn't been determined, but he does reportedly have investor reports indicating 2017 as the most lucrative year in UFC's history backing him up. And there's no denying that UFC's five year deal with ESPN is big news for the brand, with the full benefits of the partnership only becoming clear after it officially begins next year. In the meantime, some of the UFC's biggest stars (including Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz, Brock Lesnar, and more) could see competition before then, and White says that the approaching ESPN partnership will make UFC bigger than it's ever been before:

"Obviously this ESPN deal is going to be massive for us, expose us to millions of people just here in the U.S. that haven't been exposed to the UFC … We're going to continue to go into markets we haven't been, we're going to continue to find the best talent in the world. I love to find up-and-coming talent. I love to find the next guy or girl. Continue to build the sport. That's it. That's my focus. It's not rocket science, it's nothing crazy. Just continue to do what we do and get bigger and bigger."

The new partnership between ESPN and UFC will officially begin on January 1st, 2019.

Bitcoin Millionaire Swindled Into Trading $2.3M In Bitcoins For Counterfeit Cash

We seem to be in a golden age of Bitcoin swindles. A South Korean Bitcoin millionaire and owner of a successful Singapore crypto business was swindled out of approximately $2.3 million worth of bitcoins after two co-conspirators convinced him to trade it for counterfeit money, according to a recent report from France 24.

It happened in Nice, on the French Riviera. According to the authorities, "a Serbian man and his accomplice" targeted the South Korean mark, luring him to the luxurious locale with promises of investing in his business. In reality, they were setting a trap involving €2 million in counterfeit €500 notes.

The fraudulent exchange was made, and the businessman somehow discovered that every single €500 note he'd been given in exchange for his bitcoins was a counterfeit copy — reportedly made using Photoshop, no less. And it may be cold comfort for the victim, but French police say they have already apprehended one of the thieves, who was caught in Cannes driving around in an expensive sports car and wearing a watch worth around $110,000. The second conman is, as of this writing, still at large and there's no word yet on whether any of the victim's stolen money will be able to be recovered.

PIERRE TEYSSOT/AFP/Getty Images

Adding insult to financial injury is the fact that the counterfeit notes are reported to be "crude, photocopied fakes," which nevertheless looked real enough to fool someone from outside the country and not used to dealing with such bills on a regular basis.

On a somewhat related note, in 2016 it was announced by the European Central Bank that the €500 like the ones copied and used in the crime in question would be discontinued, owing to evidence "that this banknote could facilitate illicit activities." Production and issuance of the notes are scheduled to come to an end by the end of 2018.

Tim Cook Donates Almost $5M Worth Of Apple Stock To Charity

An unnamed charity is the recent beneficiary of a bit of philanthropy from Apple CEO Tim Cook, according to a recent SEC filing. Cook donated 23,215 Apple shares to the charity, and at closing time on the day the gift was reported, those shares came to a combined value of $4,992,153.

That reportedly leaves Cook with 878,425 shares of Apple (plus plenty of unvested shares) under his control, which are themselves worth over $188 million. There's no word, as of now, which charity might have been the recipient of Cook's donation, but in the past he's made gifts to organizations such as the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights and the Human Rights Campaign as well as other causes. And he's also expressed his intention to give away his entire fortune to charity eventually, citing his nephew's college education as his primary financial goal before that happens.

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

Despite Cook and Apple's increased interest in philanthropy, Apple has no charitable foundation unlike most companies of comparable size. The CEO spoke last year to Fortune on why that is:

"I looked at it in early 2012. And I decided not to do it. And here's why. When a company sets up a foundation, there is a risk, in my judgment, of the foundation becoming this other thing that is not connected to the company. It has a separate board of directors. They make reasonably independent decisions sometimes. It becomes a separate thing. I don't want that for Apple. I want everybody involved. Because I think that the power that we bring, the things that we can do is because we're stronger — it's with our unity there. It's when we put all of ourselves in it … If we had a foundation, my fear was it becomes something that 10 or 12 or 20 or 50 people do. And all of a sudden for the 120,000, it's just this separate thing out there. People work here to change the world. So I think that should be integral to what the company does. Not peripheral in a foundation."

The filing doesn't specify exactly when the gift was made, but only the required disclosure that such a gift was made. In 2015, he made a similar gift of Apple stock to a charity that also went unnamed.

A Prolific TV Producer You've Likely Never Heard Of Just Signed A Whopping $300 Million Deal

Unless you're a TV industry follower or just a TV addict who loves reading credits, it's possible that you're not familiar with the name Greg Berlanti. But if you've ever seen TV shows like Flash, Arrow, Riverdale, Legends of Tomorrow, or even Dawson's Creek, you're familiar with some of his handiwork. And now he's signed a lucrative deal to stay on with Warner Bros until at least 2024 in a deal reported by Variety to be worth "well over $300 million." Here's part of Berlanti's press statement following the closing of the deal:

"A lot has changed about TV since I started working in it 20 years ago, but what hasn't changed is how blessed I feel to come to work every day, where I work with the most talented, hardest-working company, executives, showrunners, actors, writers, directors, casts and crews in the business. I'm eternally grateful to all of them and to the audiences that have watched our shows. And finally, I'm thankful for the love, guidance and support I get from my husband, my family and my friends, which make moments like this one possible and all the moments in between the real reward."

The deal essentially consists of WB taking a financial interest in Berlanti's production company Greg Berlanti Productions, and buying out his profit participation arrangements on 14 current Berlanti productions for WB. These shows are spread across six networks as well as the online platform CW Seed, and the new agreement with WB was engineered "to provide Berlanti's company iron-clad cash guarantees on every show he delivers, and to help Berlanti monetize the multitude of profit participation points he holds on current productions."

Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images

Berlanti is reported to have been uninterested in looking outside of his longtime home at WB before renewing his contract with the company, although he remains a free agent in the feature film world, as the new contract only pertains to TV (he directed the film Love, Simon earlier this year). Warner Bros was said to be eager to lock in a new contract with Berlanti anyway, and in fact his previous WB contract still had another two years to go before this new deal was signed.

In the immediate future, Berlanti already has two series — The Red Line and God Friended Me — sold to CBS, and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on its way to Netflix.

Five Families Who've Lost Massive Fortunes

Being rich must be great. Being rich and then losing millions (or billions!) must be pure hell. Imagine that you're used to the good life. You've got a penthouse on Park Avenue and vacations in the chicest spots around the globe. And then one day, that money is all gone and you're living in a modest home, driving a Toyota, and vacationing in Florida. (Not that there is anything wrong with vacationing in Florida – it's just not the French Riviera.) Believe it or not, this happens! A family can amass the kind of fortune that should last many, many, many generations and then see it wiped out quickly. Whether it is bad investments, over-spending, or too much debt – the five families below all experienced the loss of vast fortunes. These families were once among the richest in the country. They no longer are.

The Vanderbilt Family
When Cornelius Vanderbilt died in 1877, he was worth about $100 million. Cornelius borrowed $100 from his mother in 1810 and started his steamship and railroad company. Now, six generations later, the wildly successful businesses he founded does not belong to his family. Worse, the family fortune is wiped out. CNN anchor Anderson Cooper is a 6thgeneration descendant of Cornelius. His mother is fashion designer Gloria Vanderbilt. Cooper once told Howard Stern on his radio show, "My mom's made it clear to me that there is no trust fund."

Gloria Vanderbilt (Photo by Robin Marchant/Getty Images)

The Pulitzer Family
It took the Pulitzer family fortune just two generations to be wiped out. Joseph Pulitzer started the publishing empire that made his family wealthy. In his 1982 divorce filings, his grandson Peter Pulitzer had a net worth of $25 million. Not long after, he had to be financially bailed out by his ex-wife's husband. The 800-acre citrus grove Peter and his sons owned in Florida was on the verge of foreclosure after bacteria spread through the crops. Pulitzer had to be bailed out by Tim Boberg, his ex-wife Roxanne's new husband, with a $220,000 mortgage on the property, another mortgage of $1.3 million, and a line of credit.

The Stroh Family
Bernhard Stroh came to the U.S. in 1850 with $150 and his German family's recipe for beer. His sons expanded the family beer empire. By the 1980s, the Stroh family controlled the third largest brewing company in the U.S. and had a family fortune of $700 million. Today, five generations after Bernhard immigrated to the U.S. from Germany, the company no longer exists. The Stroh fortune was done in by stiff competition, missed opportunities, and too much debt.

The Kluge Family
Patricia Kluge divorced her husband John Kluge, founder of Metromedia, after nine years of marriage. As part of the divorce settlement, she received a 200-acre estate and $1 million per year. By 2011 she was bankrupt. She had put all of her money into a vineyard she'd bought near her home. She took on too much debt to expand and then the real estate crash happened. Her property was foreclosed on. Donald Trump ended up buying her vineyard for $6.2 million.

The Hartford Family
In 1940, the Hartford family was among the wealthiest American families. Huntington Hartford, the heir to the A&P grocery store fortune lost millions living a playboy lifestyle and through failed business ventures. As the grandson of the founder of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., Hartford received an income of $1.5 million per year. He ended up losing the family fortune and going bankrupt.

Andrey Andreev Is A Real Life Cupid With Five Dating Apps To His Name

Russian entrepreneur Andrey Andreev is the king of dating apps. He's the man behind five successful online dating apps including Badoo – the largest dating app in the world, with 380 million users. He's also involved in Chappy, a dating app for gay men and Huggle an app that matches people based on the places they frequent. He gets a cut of those apps' profits in exchange for his developers building and managing the infrastructure. He founded Mamba, the most popular dating app in Russia. He also has a 79% stake in Bumble, which is the fastest growing dating app in the U.S. All of this has given the 44-year-old a net worth of $1.5 billion.

Andreev keeps a low profile for someone who has built his career on dating apps. Andreev lives and works in London. He was born Andrey Ogandzhantyants in Moscow. Both of his parents are scientists. He changed his name to his mother's maiden name because it was easier to spell. He's always been passionate about technology. He briefly attended the University of Moscow but dropped out at age 18 to move to Spain. He had an urge to see the world and his parents loaned him the money for his adventures.

ERIC PIERMONT/AFP/Getty Images

In 1995, he founded Virus, an e-commerce site that sold computers and accessories to internet users in Russia. In 1997, he sold it for a few hundred thousand dollars and paid his parents back for that loan they gave him to travel. In 1999, he founded SpyLog, which was software that tracked visitors to websites. It was basically Google Analytics before that lunched in 2005. Andreev left SpyLog in December 2001.

In 2002, he built Begun, a contextual ads company. Google almost bought Begun in 2008 for $140 million but the deal never went through. Begun still exists, but Andreev left in early 2004. It's rumored that the Google sale didn't go through due to political interference. It has been a decade since the last time Andreev went to Moscow. His dad has passed away. His mom lives in Paris. He is a British citizen now.

Andreev founded Badoo in Spain in 2006 and launched it in 2009. The company's headquarters are in London and there is a Moscow office. Badoo employs 300 people. Andreev met Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd when she was at Tinder and convinced her to work with him when she took on her own project. In August 2014, Andreev, Wolfe Herd, and Tinder's original designers flew to Mykonos to hammer out Whitney's idea for a new dating app where women would control the communication. Three months later, Bumble was born.

Badoo remains Andreev's biggest business. The app launched a facial recognition feature in 2017. It allows users to upload a picture of a person they like, and the app will then find other Badoo users who look similar. Andreev will not disclose Badoo's revenue but said that Match Group – the publicly traded company that runs Match.com, OkCupid, and Tinder is a good comparison for Badoo. Match reports $1.3 billion in revenue for 2017.

Somewhat ironically, the king of online dating didn't meet his girlfriend on an app.
