These Four Woman Have Made Insane Fortunes Thanks To Cosmetic Empires

These four self-made women are among the richest in the United States. They all made the bulk of their fortunes with their own makeup, skincare, or beauty companies. Each of these four women – Huda Kattan, Anastasia Soare, Kylie Jenner, and Jamie Kern Lima – had a vision and created their makeup empires from the ground up. Each of them has a staggering net worth. Let's take a look at how they did it.

Huda Kattan
Huda Kattan is the 34-year-old founder of Huda Beauty. Her billion dollar cosmetics company started as a WordPress blog in 2010 where she would post makeup tips and tutorials. In 2013, Kattan launched her cosmetics line. Her first product was a set of false eyelashes that Sephora released. Kim Kardashian became a fan and helped Huda Beauty's Instagram account rack up more than 26 million followers. The Dubai based company evolved into a full line of cosmetics including eye shadow palettes, liquid lipsticks, lip liners, highlighter palettes, foundation, and false nails. Today Huda Beauty has more than 140 products. Kattan is ranked number one on the "2017 Influencer Instagram Rich List." She makes $18,000 for each sponsored post. Huda Beauty brings in at least $200 million in annual revenue. Her sisters are her partners.

Kattan was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Iraqi immigrants. The family later moved to Tennessee, Boston, and Dubai. In the U.S. she was surrounded by mostly white people and struggled with self confidence after being bullied for her ethnicity. She started telling people her name was Heidi. Makeup comforted her. She attended the University of Michigan-Dearborn where she majored in finance. Huda Kattan is the majority owner of Huda Beauty and has an estimated net worth of $550 million.

Anastasia Soare
Eyebrows are having a moment in fashion. Thick, well groomed brows are all the rage. There's one woman that women are turning to to get the eyebrows of their dreams: Anastasia Soare. She is the founder of Anastasia Beverly Hills and she has been a favorite of celebs and Los Angelinos in the know for decades. Soare was born in Romania and moved to Los Angeles in 1989. She was a 32-year-old single mother who didn't speak any English. She got a job in Los Angeles as an aesthetician. She noticed that American women didn't pay much attention to their eyebrows. She had learned about the golden ratio back in art school and began applying it to her clients' eyebrows. The golden ratio was also used by Leonardo da Vinci. It uses the ratio of 1.618 to 1.0 to find the perfect arch of an eyebrow. Soare has patented this.

It didn't take long for celebrities to find her. Supermodels Cindy Crawford, Stephanie Seymour, and Naomi Campbell were among the first famous ladies to have their brows done by Anastasia. She opened her own small one room studio in Beverly Hills in 1992 and found herself working seven days a week offering her eyebrow grooming, facials, and waxing. Five years later, she was successful enough to open her flagship Beverly Hills salon.

Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images

She was also one of the first beauty companies to use social media as a brand strategy. In 2013, Anastasia Beverly Hills launched an Instagram account and soon found that Insta models and influencers including Kim Kardashian, helped her go viral. Due to her Instagram success, Soare then launched a makeup line. Not long after, Anastasia Beverly Hills products were selling in Sephora, Ulta, and pretty much everywhere else.

Soare's line now sells 485 products and goes well beyond makeup for eyebrows. Anastasia Beverly Hills is in 2,000 stores around the world. The company brings in about $340 million in annual revenue.  The company is currently worth around $1.5 billion. Soare owns 100% of the company.

Kylie Jenner
Kylie Jenner is 20 years old. She's a member of the Kardashian-Jenner family. She's a mom. She's a model. She's a makeup mogul. According to a July 2018 Forbes cover story, Kylie Jenner currently has a net worth of $900 million. Kylie Cosmetics is one of the hottest makeup companies in history. She launched it two years ago with a $29 lip kit containing a lipstick and lip liner. Since that time, Kylie Cosmetics has sold more than $630 million worth of makeup—with $330 million of that in 2017. Kylie Cosmetics is worth an estimated $800 million. Kylie Jenner owns 100% of Kylie Cosmetics.

Kylie used $250,000 of her modeling earnings to manufacture the first 15,000 lip kits. She spent months teasing the kits on Instagram and announced the launch on social media the day before they went on sale. The lip kits sold out in less than a minute. Kylie Lip Kits relaunched as Kylie Cosmetics in February 2016 with 500,000 lip kits in six shades stocked. By the end of that year, Kylie's company was selling 50 or so products with revenue of $307 million.

Scott Barbour/Getty Images

We live in the age of social media and that has really helped Kylie reach her fans and customers. Kylie outsources the manufacturing, packaging, sales, and fulfillment. Kris Jenner handles the business side in exchange for a 10% cut. Basically, all Kylie does to make that staggering about of money is leverage her social media following. She takes to Instagram and Snapchat nearly hourly posting pouting selfies about which shade of Kylie Cosmetics she's wearing, posts videos of upcoming products, and announces new launches. It doesn't sound like much until you consider the fact that she has more than 110 million followers on Instagram alone, many of whom are young women and girls—the target audience for those peddling lip gloss and mascara.

Kylie Cosmetics has generated around $230 million in net profit since it launched.

Jamie Kern Lima
Jamie Kern Lima may look familiar to you. She was a contestant on the first season of Big Brother. She was also Miss Washington. And a reporter. For the past decade, however, she has been the founder and driving force behind IT Cosmetics. But let's back up a bit. Jamie worked her way through Washington State working several jobs including teaching gymnastics, babysitting, working as a receptionist, bagging groceries, and waiting tables. Right before graduation, she took a risk and applied to be a member of the first season of Big Brother. After the reality show wrapped, she became a reporter. She loved telling stories but hated the constant critiques and judgments about her appearance. She has rosacea and the red blotches that appeared on her skin weren't camera friendly. So, she quit her job to focus on an idea she had—a line of makeup that would work for people like her.

When she was a reporter, she had a hard time finding makeup products that worked for skin like hers. This led her to realize that there was room in the market for a product for people with rosacea and other skin conditions. She launched IT Cosmetics – the IT stands for Innovative Technology. She wanted to create a product that gave results, rather than one that was trendy. For years she met with major cosmetics companies but was unable to sell her idea.

Ben Gabbe/Getty Images

Her instincts told her to keep moving forward. She and her team have worked 100 hour weeks for the past decade. She and her husband and co-founder Paulo Lima have not taken a day off since they launched the company. She is a relentless marketer. She used her pageant and reporting experience to make in store appearances, make YouTube videos, and go on QVC live with the message that her product worked and she would show you.

Her appearances always begin with her calmly talking about women's problems and issues with makeup. She uses a face wipe to take the makeup off of her right cheek. This reveals her rosacea. Then she reapplies her IT Cosmetics products and the rosacea disappears. That message resonated with women. In 2015, IT Cosmetics had $182 million in sales. By 2016, the company was on track to sell more than $400 million. That got the attention of L'Oreal. In August 2016, L'Oreal offered Jamie $1.2 billion in cash. Jamie Kern Lima, as the majority owner, took home roughly $410 million after taxes.

The Golden State Has More Self-Made Female Entrepreneurs Than Any Other State, Proving The Left Coast Is The Best Coast

California is the place to be if you are a woman and an entrepreneur. The gold rush is in full force with 27 women on this year's list of America's Richest Self Made women who make their home in the Golden State. That is nearly half of the entire list! These women are tech executives, pop stars, makeup mavens, and more with a collective net worth of nearly $30 billion. Fourteen of these women live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Eight of those made their money in tech, including Oracle co-CEO Safra Catz, Houzz co-founder and CEO Adi Tatarko, and YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki. Sixteen live in Southern California. Unsurprisingly those women largely made their money in entertainment—including Oprah, Barbra Streisand, and Beyoncé.

No other state even comes close to California's domination. New York is the closest with six women on the richest list. The left coast is the best coast. Six of the seven newcomers to the list this year are all from California including siblings Kim Kardashian West and Kylie Jenner as well as YouTube CEO Susan's younger sister, Anne Wojcicki, founder of 23andMe.

Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

Former HP CEO Meg Whitman is the richest woman in California with $3.3 billion – she unseated Oprah Winfrey, who reigned supreme the last two years. Meg is one of 10 women on the list who made their fortunes in tech. Others include Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer. BlackLine founder Therese Tucker is a newcomer to the list. Blackline is an enterprise accounting automation software company. She is the only tech woman on the California list that doesn't call Silicon Valley home. Tucker lives in Los Angeles.

Eleven of the 27 Californians are billionaires – that's five more than last year. Among the new members of the three comma club are Rodan + Fields founders Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields, eyebrow queen Anastasia Soare, and Arista Network's Jayshree Ullal.

Soare is one of three self-made cosmetic queens on the list based in California. The other two are Kim Kardashian West and Kylie Jenner.

For the first time, two sets of siblings make the list and all four women live in California.

Shonda Rhimes: The $140 Million Storyteller

$
0
0

Last year, Shonda Rhimes signed a roughly $100 million, 4-year deal with Netflix. She had already been dominating network television for about a decade and a half. Her Netflix deal made history. She was one of the first showrunners to sign an exclusive deal with the streaming service. Oh, and by the way, she also took home an eight-figure check, on the spot. The Netflix deal is the latest feather in the cap of one of the most successful, creative, and wealthiest women in TV. With a net worth of $140 million, she is the richest female showrunner in the United States.

Shonda Rhimes was born in Chicago in 1970. Her mother was a college administrator and her father a college professor. She got her undergraduate degree from Dartmouth. After a stint as an ad copywriter in San Francisco, Shonda backed her bags and moved to Los Angeles where she got her MFA from the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts.

Mike Coppola/Getty Images

After film school, Shonda found herself in a position many writers in Hollywood face. She was unemployed. She interned at Denzel Washington's production company for a while. She also worked at a variety of day jobs, including an office manager, and then as a counselor at a job center that taught mentally ill and homeless people job skills. All along she continued to write and eventually a script she wrote was bought by New Line Cinema. From that, Shonda was hired to co-write the acclaimed 1999 HBO movie Introducing Dorothy Dandridge. That put Shonda on the map and she was hired to write a number of scripts, including the 2002 Britney Spears movie Crossroads, which, while critically panned, still made more than $60 million at the box office.

In 2003, Rhimes drew on her high school days as a hospital volunteer to work on a new project. That project was Grey's Anatomy. ABC bought it on a pitch and scheduled it as a midseason replacement in 2005. By the end of the first season, Grey's Anatomy had 20 million viewers each week.

In 2007, Rhimes created and produced the Grey's Anatomy spin-off series Private Practice, which ran for six seasons. In 2012, Scandal premiered and is the first show created by an African American woman with an African American woman as the lead character. In 2014, How To Get Away With Murder premiered. In 2015, The Catch premiered.  In 2018, Station 19 and  For the People premiered. Shonda Rhimes and her Shondaland production company absolutely rule, not just ABC, but the primetime network landscape. Scandal and Grey's Anatomy, have consistently been two of the most valuable properties on TV and account for about 5% of ABC's total ad revenue – a bit more than $300 million a season – and that doesn't include the tens of millions more in licensing for Grey's Anatomy in syndication or in foreign countries.

Even more impressive, in an age of declining viewership for traditional network television, more than 90% of the audience for Grey's Anatomy stayed tuned for Scandal. Shonda Rhimes absolutely dominates the critical 18-to-49 year old female demographic making her a very valuable asset to ABC.

Shonda's fortune has been made nearly completely from her years at ABC with the long running shows she has created. She not just gets a fee for each episode she produced of each of her shows—and that's more than 317 for Grey's Anatomy alone – she also made and additional $10 million a year over the last three years from ABC and at least 10% of the profit when her shows were syndicated or sold to streaming services. That amounts to about $1 million an episode for Rhimes.

Shonda Rhimes' series have generated at least $2 billion in revenue for ABC through advertising, syndication, and international licensing.

Fans of Rhimes are eager to see what she will create next. We won't have to wait long, her first project is based on the true story of Anna Delvey, a female con artist in New York City's high society.

Judge Judy Made $150 Million Last Year

$

Judy Sheindlin (better known to the world at large as Judge Judy), unless you're home watching TV during the day, can be an easy person to forget about. But contrary to what you might guess, she's among the best paid people on TV, and last year alone – she raked in an impressive almost $150 million. And more than $100 million of that was due to a savvy business move over and above the handsome salary she receives for her show.

First, that salary. It currently sits at a reported $47 million a year, and a court decision earlier this year put that salary in the spotlight. Rebel Entertainment Partners claimed in court that CBS had "deliberately inflated" Sheindlin's salary in order to exploit a financial loophole and avoid paying three original producers of the Judge Judy TV show the royalties they were owed. A judge ultimately sided with CBS and Judge Judy (go figure), but before the decision was made Sheindlin made her feelings on the matter very clear:

"[T]o suggest that the largest profit participant, which is CBS, would pay me willingly more money is so ludicrous.  Their back's to the wall."

Sheindlin was referring to her "take it or leave it" relationship with CBS executives, which involves her providing a list of demands to her bosses every three years, when it's time for her contract to be renegotiated. Because she's such a draw and the "Judge Judy" brand so valuable, they're forced to give her what she wants or do just that – take it or leave it.

Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images

Over and above her salary from CBS, Sheindlin profited from an extremely shrewd business decision back in 2015, when her current contract through 2020 was being negotiated. She asked CBS for the rights to all of her old episodes, an archive of more than 5,000 episodes, plus all the shows that will be produced between the present and 2021. At the time, CBS thought the rights were more or less worthless, under the reasoning that old Judge Judy reruns weren't of interest to viewers.

That turned out not to be the case, and after Sheindlin acquired the rights to her old episodes, other networks began the bidding to snatch them up. The bidding got so hot, in fact, that CBS had to place a bid of their own, and ended up buying back rights they'd given away for free for $95 million!

All together, it adds up to a very good financial year for Judge Judy.

What Exactly Are The Rams Doing With Aaron Donald?

$
0
0

The Los Angeles Rams were one of the surprise teams in the NFL last year. In their first season in L.A., they won the NFC West with a surprising 12-4 record. Despite having a stud running back in Todd Gurley and an improving quarterback in Jared Goff, the defense was the machine that made the Rams go.

That's why it's been fascinating to watch this offseason unfold for the Rams. They seem to be doing everything they can to NOT pay their top defensive player.

Aaron Donald is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. However, he's still on his rookie deal, which makes him the 38th highest-paid defensive lineman. Understandably, Donald wants a raise.

But the Rams haven't given him one, even though he's had four seasons ranging from productive to nearly unstoppable.

Donald made just $2 million last year, and will earn $6.9 million this year. He sat out until just a few days before training camp in 2017. He'll likely do the same this season – and maybe he'll sit out even longer. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Donald could hold out until a new deal comes along.

Getty Images

That would result in a LOT of fines. Donald would be fined $30,000 for every day he holds out, and would lose $405,000 per game he missed (including the preseason). The Rams first preseason game is on August 9. If Donald is still holding out by then, he'll have been fined more than half a million dollars.

When he held out last year, Donald accrued $1.4 million in fines. The Rams didn't actually make him pay the money, but who knows what they'll do this season?

The whole situation is even more confusing because the Rams have been throwing around lots of money. They've offered big contracts to Gurley and receiver Brandin Cooks. But when it comes to Donald, they're refusing to pay up.

In fact, the Rams could potentially not ever sign Donald to a long-term deal. They hold the leverage in this situation. After this year, they could stick the franchise tag on him, preventing the defensive lineman from receiving offers from other teams.

They could repeat that process twice more, for a total of three years under the franchise tag. Donald would earn about $58.7 million over that span. That's closer to what he's looking for in a deal, but remember: this would be a year-to-year situation. One injury could cost millions of dollars.

For now, neither side seems willing to budge, or even in a hurry to figure things out. We'll see how it ultimately impacts the team's season.
