How Jay Leno Went From McDonald's Employee To Host Of The Tonight Show

0
0

Jay Leno has a net worth of $400 million. He's best known as the former host of The Tonight Show, a job he had for 22 years and made about $30 million a year at. That's all a long way, however, from the beginning of his working life when he earned minimum wage cutting French fries at a McDonald's in Andover, Massachusetts, from 1966 to 1968. Even in those early days, Leno had a strong work ethic. He always had at least two jobs or income streams. Why? He realized that would be the quickest way to become a millionaire.

Another strategy he used was that he would take the larger of his two paychecks and put it in his savings account. He lived off the smaller one. In the early days of his career as a comedian, that meant he saved the money he made working at a car dealership and lived off the money he made telling jokes. After a while, the money he made as a comedian became larger than the money he made selling cars, so he started saving that and spending the other.

Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images

He kept up with this practice even while he was the host of The Tonight Show. He basically pretended that he worked The Tonight Show for free. He lived off the money he made from doing stand up comedy shows. After 22 years of doing that, he had a substantial amount of money. He still does two to three comedy gigs a week.

Leno also avoided credit cards and never carried any debt. When he does use a credit card, he pays it off at the end of the month. He didn't buy his house until he could pay cash for it.

Leno is well known in the industry for his work ethic, which is something he learned while working at McDonald's. Ensuring that you're producing a great product should be the number one goal. After a long day prepping for and filming The Tonight Show, Leno would go home and get to work writing more jokes. In a 1993 episode of 60 Minutes, Leno said:

"I meet with the writers at about midnight or so and work until about 4:00am. I sleep four hours, maybe five. If you have time to complain, you don't have enough work to do."

Leno also believes that you learn the best lessons from mistakes. Every mistake gives you empathy for other people when they make the same mistake, he said. Plus, failure keeps you humble.

Lisa Marie Presley's Money Drama Continues. Claims Her Manager Bankrupted Her.

Lisa Marie Presley is claiming that her ex-business manager paid himself more than $700,000 per year, while he was losing her $100 million fortune. In a new case filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, Elvis' 50-year-old daughter is alleging that Barry Siegel and his company, Provident Financial Management, "enriched himself with exorbitant fees." She has accused Siegel of "reckless and negligent" investments that ran her $100 million trust fund set up by her father "into the ground." She has just $14,000 left of the trust fund.

The biggest failed investment was in the holding company for American Idol, which ended up going bankrupt. Siegel is countersuing for $800,000 in damages. Siegel also is continuing to insist that it was Presley's uncontrolled spending that bankrupted her trust fund, not his management. Lisa Marie's attorneys have filed a 16-page court filing detailing how well paid Siegel made sure he was.

"Between 2005 and the time of the American Idol bankruptcy, Siegel billed $4.9 million to "manage" the trust, an average annual salary of $701,000 per year. Had Siegel disclosed the trust's true financial condition to Presley and restricted spending to the trust's "income" rather than its principal assets, Presley would have lived comfortably on an annual budget of between $1.5 and $2 million per year, after taxes. On this budget, Siegel's lucrative compensation package would have amounted to between 40 to 50 per cent of Presley's post-tax annual budget – an amount she undoubtedly would not have agreed to had she been aware of her true financial condition."

Christopher Polk/Getty Images

Presley is alleging that Siegel covered up the dire straits of her finances, repeatedly insisting that she was in good shape with her finances, according to the legal documents. Her lawyers referred to a number of emails from Siegel responding to Presley's questions about how her trust fund was doing.

"We're in good shape on your finances'… 'We're ok,'…Be assured that we are doing everything on our end to maintain both your current lifestyle and the future of your family," Siegel allegedly told Presley.

Presley fired Siegel in 2015, after she discovered the true state of her trust. He allegedly lost more than $100 million of the trust's net worth over the course of a decade and put the trust into deep debt.  The lawsuit blames Presley's losses on Siegel's decision to sell 85% of her trust's stock in Elvis Presley Enterprises (EPE) in 2005. The stake in EPE was the trust's largest asset and worth $100 million at the time. However, the Trust only received $40 million in cash and $25 million in stock in the holding company of American Idol.

When American Idol didn't bring in enough income, Siegel began liquidating other assets of the trust to keep Presley's lifestyle the same as it was before the sale of EPE. Siegel recommended a budget for Presley that was twice her after tax income.  According to the filing:

"Ultimately, Siegel allowed Presley to spend $39 million of the $40 million in liquidity that the trust received in the EPE sale in a span of only four years, from 2005 to 2008, even though the trust provided that the assets were supposed to last Presley for the rest of her lifetime and provide security for her children."

The court documents also reveal that Presley lost a ton of money on the American Idol investment as well. After the last season of American Idol aired, the holding company went bankrupt. Lisa Marie's Trust lost $24.5 million of the $25 million in stock that was received in the sale of Elvis Presley Enterprises.

Presley also claimed that her real estate portfolio was also "run into the ground" by Siegel's mismanagement. Two mortgages on houses owned by the trust in Hawaii and Hidden Hills, California were more than the properties were worth in 2010. Despite this, Siegel told Presley she was cleared to spend $9 million on an estate in England. Siegel then structured the transaction of that English property so that her entire trust was collateral for the mortgage with a balloon payment of $6.7 million due in December 2015. The trust was unable to make the balloon payment which put the trust into default and all of its assets at risk—where they remain today.

Presley also alleges that Siegel failed to pay the trust's taxes and as a result, the trust owes millions in back taxes in both the U.S. and U.K.

Lisa Marie Presley is $16 million in debt. Taxes account for $10 million of that. Lisa Marie is also still dealing with her bitter divorce battle from her ex Michael Lockwood, who is asking her to pay him $263,000 a year so he can continue to live in the lifestyle he enjoyed while married to Elvis' daughter. Attempts at settlements have failed and the former couple is set for four day trial in August.

How Much Is Al Cowlings' White Ford Bronco From The O.J. Simpson Chase Worth?

0
0

The sight of the 1994 white Ford Bronco from the O.J. Simpson chase is one of the most iconic moments in modern history. The car was owned by Al Cowlings, Simpson's friend and former teammate. Simpson rode in the back during the chase, refusing to turn himself in around the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

The chase through Los Angeles, which spanned 60 miles at low speeds, was broadcast live around the world. And it made the car a national symbol. Simpson's former agent, Mike Gilbert, purchased Cowlings' car soon after the chase. It's been out of the public eye for the most part, only resurfacing in the past few years in Alcatraz East Museum in Tennessee.

But now, Gilbert is looking to sell the Bronco. And he could make a HUGE profit.

MIKE NELSON/AFP/Getty Images

The current Kelley Blue Book value of the car – at its highest price – is $23,000. Gilbert is looking to sell the car for $1 million, which is a markup of nearly 4,250 percent.

Gilbert has said he's fielded offers as high as $500,000 for the Bronco. He's hoping to sell the car so he can give the money to his kids.

Gilbert initially bought the Bronco in order to keep it out of "distasteful" tours. But as time has gone on, he realizes he's sitting on a potentially lucrative investment. No reports of any potential buyers – but you figure someone will want a piece of history soon enough.

Rob Lowe Just Listed His Santa Barbara Mansion For $47 MILLION

Rob Lowe is a bit of an enigma. I bet if you asked 10 random people what movie or TV show they think of when they think of Rob Lowe, they'd give 10 different answers. My answer? Wayne's World. And Tommy Boy. Perfectly solid answers but those are 20 year old references! Rob has never stopped working and has been in countless popular movies and TV shows. Let's not forget Austin Powers, St. Elmo's Fire, The Outsiders… Or the fact that Rob appeared in 80 episodes of The West Wing between 1996 and 2006, followed by 76 episodes of Brother's & Sisters between 2006 and 2010, followed by 76 episodes of Parks and Recreation between 2010 and 2016 and then in 2016 he began starring in the CBS drama Code Black. Clearly, the guy likes to work and Hollywood likes to hire him.

As a much deserved reward for his hard work, in 2005, Rob and his longtime wife Sheryl bought 3.4 acres of land in Montecito, California and started building their dream home. When it was finished in 2009, the result was an absolutely stunning 10,000 acre home with oceanfront views, 20 rooms, a home theater, a wine cellar, a piano bar and much much more.

Today they are selling that home because both of their sons have moved away and the couple is looking for new real estate adventures.

There's not point in even trying to describe this property. Let this video speak for itself:

To Avoid A Bankruptcy Case, Former Tennis Star Boris Becker Is Claiming Diplomatic Immunity

Boris Becker is the youngest man to ever win at Wimbledon, securing the championship in 1985, at just 17 years old. The German eventually won six singles titles, and coached Novak Djokovic from 2014 to 2016. As of summer 2017, Becker has served as Head of Men's Tennis of the German Tennis Federation.

Since about that same time, the UK's Bankruptcy and Companies Court declared him bankrupt. Now, Becker is fighting back by claiming diplomatic immunity.

In April, the government of the Central African Republic appointed Becker as sport and culture attache to the European Union. His lawyers pointed to the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations as protection from any bankruptcy proceedings.

Becker allegedly owes money to London-based private bank Arbuthnot Latham. In the bankruptcy order, the court said Becker's debt was not paid in full and there was no realistic expectation that it would ever be paid.

But Becker's lawyers are arguing that because of his work as a diplomat for the Central African Republic, he's immune from his bankruptcy payments in his home country.

Becker said in a statement that the bankruptcy proceedings are "both unjustified and unjust." He added that the entire situation has "inflicted a whole heap of damage on me, both commercially and professionally."

The war-torn Central African Republic is one of the poorest nations in the world. There are currently about 22,500 diplomats with immunity in the UK, according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Becker currently lives in Wimbledon in London. He also reportedly has homes and apartments in Munich, Monaco, Schwyz, and Miami.

While it's unclear how much Becker allegedly owes, if he wins this case, that sum will be zero.

'Fortnite' Star Ninja Signs Deal With Red Bull

Fortnite star Tyler Blevins, better known as Ninja, made headlines earlier this year for his lucrative Twitch and YouTube streams, but in the meantime he's managed to secure some major sponsorship deals. Now, Forbes reports that he has at least one in the bag, a deal with energy drink brand Red Bull, which is putting together a live event in Chicago called "Rise Till Dawn."

On July 21st, the "Rise Till Dawn" event will take place at Chicago's Willis Tower, otherwise known by its former name of Sears Tower. Fortnite players will get the chance to compete against Ninja in an all-night free-for-all, with the opportunity to win a $2,250 first prize. Here's the official word from the event's website:

"When the sun sets in the West on July 21, teams of two will take part in Red Bull Rise Till Dawn, a dusk to dawn Battle Royale duo competition taking place on the 99th floor of Chicago's famed Willis Tower. Featuring a unique scoring system, the tournament will start as soon as the sun sets at 8:21 p.m. and continue throughout the night as teams battle to accumulate the most points possible before the sun rises over Lake Michigan at 5:35 a.m."

Ethan Miller/Getty Images

Unquestionably, $2,250 is a lot to play video games, but it's an actually pretty small prize, compared to Ninja's last comparable event in Las Vegas, which had a top prize of $50,000. There doesn't appear to be any information on why the event next month, even with its high-profile big corporate sponsorship, has such a relatively small jackpot, but perhaps more information on that will become clear as we get closer to the 21st of July.

Of course, even with the smaller prize package, tickets to compete in the tournament reportedly sold out in a matter of hours after the event was announced.

Mark Zuckerberg Is Inches Away From Being Richer Than Warren Buffett

0

Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has famously claimed not to have any real interest in money or wealth, which just goes to show that many of us are cursed to end up with an overwhelming surplus of the very thing that doesn't interest us: Bloomberg reports that he may be on the cusp of overtaking Warren Buffett on the list of the world's richest people.

The news comes as Facebook's stock is in the midst of a recovery from the social media platform's disastrous PR woes earlier this year, as many users' concerns about privacy became crystallized by the Cambridge Analytica data privacy breach. The stock hit a low point of $152.22 a share in late March, losing 18 percent of its total value at the height of the scandal. As of this writing it's hovering around the $202 mark, which puts Zuckerberg's total fortune at about $81.6 billion, which in turn puts the wealth gap between Zuckerberg and Buffett at a little under $30 million — an unimaginable sum for most people, but at their level of wealth it's practically spitting distance.

Alex Wong/Getty Images

Should Zuckerberg manage to close that gap, it will be partly due to Facebook's stock market fortunes but also Buffett's own charitable giving. His famous goal to give away the bulk of his fortune by the time he passes away has already contributed to a slide down from where he once stood as the world's richest person. All told, he's donated around 290 million Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares to various charitable causes, and those shares would be valued at about $50 billion today.

Like Warren Buffett, Zuckerberg has also pledged to give away at least 99 percent of his wealth over the course of his lifetime, but unlike Buffett, since he's only 34 years old he has plenty of time to spread that giving out.

27-Year-Old Billionaire John Collison Attributes His Success To His Employees, And Luck

0
0

Depending on how you feel about the concept of the self-made billionaire, at 27, John Collison qualifies as the youngest in the world. He founded payments company Stripe along with his brother Patrick, raking about a billion dollars off the top of the $9.2 billion company to earn that title. But in a recent interview on the NPR podcast How I Built This, Collison was open about how much of that success can be attributed to his own intelligence and work ethic and how much of it can be linked to other, external factors:

"I think the question is less about, you know, how much can be attributed to my skill and intelligence and instead to the skill and intelligence of the hundreds of people who've gotten Stripe to where it is. And I guess I would say that skill and intelligence and especially, most importantly, intense application and hard work — I think all those things are necessary.

"I think had they not been there, had there not been so many people who just came up with so many smart ways of doing things and, you know, in many cases toiled at such length, there's not a chance, not a sliver of a chance that we would be here. But I also think that the luck was required too. There are, again, groups of people who are smarter and harder-working than us who just didn't get the same good fortune."

JACQUES DEMARTHON/AFP/Getty Images

Collison's luck in his tech career struck early on when both he and his brother got accepted into two prestigious colleges both located in Boston (he went to MIT, his brother to Harvard), where they moved from their home near Limerick, Ireland. While there, they came up with their first company, Auctomatic, at a local pub, as legend would have it. Auctomatic got the attention of eBay which incorporated the brothers' technology into their own massively popular online auction site.

The two brothers both dropped out of their respective schools in order to focus on Auctomatic, and in 2008 their efforts were rewarded when they sold the company to Canadian media company Communicate for a cool $5 million. Their experience in the tech world indicated that online payments were often a big obstacle in that field, which led them to develop Stripe, which now handles tens of billions in online purchased on an annual basis, grabbing a small fee from each one.

NYC Taxi Medallions Sell For More Than $24 Million

Taxi medallions are the New York City issued licenses yellow cabs are mandated to possess. Several medallions that belonged to convicted felon Evgeny Freidman sold for more than $24 million.  The taxi medallions were auctioned off after the 47-year-old Russian pled guilty to felony tax fraud in the amount of $5 million last month. A total of 139 medallions were sold during the auction including 20 for hybrid taxis and 32 for accessible taxis.

Friedman was once called Taxi King and ran a taxi medallion business with Michael Cohen, Donald Trump's personal attorney. Friedman has agreed to cooperate with the government's state and federal investigations into Cohen as part of his plea deal. Without that plea, he would have faced four counts of criminal tax fraud and one of grand larceny and faced 25 years behind bars.

LOIC VENANCE/AFP/Getty Images

Between 2009 and 2014, the price of taxi medallions soared to more than $1 million each. Then Uber and Lyft and other ride sharing services came along and as a result the cost of taxi medallions dropped dramatically. In fact, today, there are more ride sharing cars in New York City than there are taxis.

Freidman pled guilty to one count of evading $50,000 in taxes and will receive five years of probation.
