Here's Why Steve Wozniak Doesn't Invest In The Stock Market

It may come as a surprise that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak doesn't have the same view towards wealth and money that most of his tech industry peers share. In a recent interview with Fortune, Wozniak explained his aversion towards high finance, and shared why he doesn't even own any stocks:

"I do not invest. I don't do that stuff. I didn't want to be near money, because it could corrupt your values."

Wozniac says his values during his time at Apple (he's still on the company payroll to this day) include developing quality product, rather than accumulating wealth: "I really didn't want to be in that super 'more than you could ever need' category," he says on his priorities with the company. Rather than investing in the stock market to grow his wealth, he's instead chosen to focus his money on things he feels passionate about, including endowments toward museums in his hometown of San Jose, California. But even though you don't get rich by investing in museums, he says the approach has rewards of its own:

"I was born there, and I have a street named after me there because of it."

Lachlan Cunningham/Getty Images

Wozniak's disinterest in wealth separates him from the late Steve Jobs, who back in 1980 reportedly refused to go along with Wozniak's move to offer $10 million worth of Apple stock to employees. But it does place him on a similar page with Apple's current CEO Tim Cook, who once warned college students in an address about the dangers of going into business purely for the money:

"Don't work for money – it will wear out fast, or you'll never make enough and you will never be happy, one or the other… You have to find the intersection of doing something you're passionate about and at the same time something that is in the service of other people."

With a net worth of $100 million, Wozniak has taken no vow of poverty. But his fortune is still only a fraction of what it might otherwise be if he didn't have the basic principles he speaks on above.

Dennis And Kimberly Quaid Reach Huge Divorce Settlement

Dennis Quaid and now ex-wife Kimberly have put the finishing touches on their divorce, and the financial details of their settlement are now available for public scrutiny, courtesy of TMZ.

The most important part of the settlement – custody of the pair's ten-year-old twins – is a 75/25 percent split, with Kimberly getting the larger portion. In child support, Dennis will have to kick in $13,750 per month, unless he has a good year and makes more than $1.3 million, in which case the child support obligation goes up. In spousal support, it's a lump sum payment of $2 million, plus another million to even out the property split:

"[S]he keeps her 2014 Mercedes, he gets the 2007 Land Rover, the 2012 Mercedes and the 2013 Honda. He gets their pad in Austin, and they're splitting the proceeds from the sale of their family home."

Kimberly filed for divorce in 2016, but it was actually the second time she did so. She first filed back in 2012, but ended up withdrawing it before the split actually took. In 2016, they issued a join statement to TMZ on the split:

"After careful consideration, we have decided to end our 12 year marriage. The decision was made amicably and with mutual respect toward one another. We will always remain great friends and devoted partners in raising our children."

David Livingston/Getty Images

The couple also made headlines in 2008, when they sued and eventually reached a settlement with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center regarding a botched procedure after the twins' birth that almost killed the pair shortly after they were delivered.

Dennis and Kimberly got married back in 2004, and all the residual payments Dennis gets from his film work before the point that they were married remain his and his alone. But the residuals from movies he made after they got married get split between the two of them on a 50/50 basis.

Samuel L. Jackson's Role As Marvel's Nick Fury Was Contractually Mandated Since 2001

It's hard to picture now, but before the Marvel Cinematic Universe became the biggest cash cow in movies (and TV), Marvel Comics was on the brink of financial ruin, and the company was focused on staying operational rather than expanding into big screen dominance. One interesting aspect of this is that when they finally got around to making an Iron Man feature film in 2008, and wanted to include comics stalwart Nick Fury in a post-credits scene, they were legally and contractually obligated to cast Samuel L. Jackson in the role thanks to a deal struck seven years earlier.

It happened like this. In the early 2000s, writer Mark Millar and artist Bryan Hitch were charged with the task of rejuvenating some of the Marvel characters to try and attract more readers to the comics. In the case of Fury, they ended up "casting" him as Samuel L. Jackson, on the page, and without the actor's permission. As Millar put it to Business Insider:

"Sam is famously the coolest man alive, and both myself and artist Bryan Hitch just liberally used him without asking any kind of permission. You have to remember, this was 2001 when we were putting this together. The idea that this might become a movie seemed preposterous, as Marvel was just climbing out of bankruptcy at the time."

Tommaso Boddi/Getty Images

Being the coolest man alive, it figures that Jackson would also be a comic book reader. And when he saw his likeness as Nick Fury, he thought about filing suit against Marvel. But instead he went with a cooler option, striking a deal with the company that in the event of a movie version of the Fury character, he would have first rights to the part. At the time, this was probably not something Jackson's accountant was particularly enthused about — after all, the character's only previous screen appearance was in a 1998 TV movie where he was played by David Hasselhoff. But as we all know, the part ended up being a hugely lucrative recurring role for Jackson, who currently has a nine picture deal with Marvel to appear in various films as the character.

The SEC Is Forcing Jay Z To Testify In Federal Court Today

$

Have you ever sent a friend an invite to an event and they didn't even reply back? Well, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is in a similar situation involving a famous rapper, and they aren't happy about it at all.

The SEC filed a subpeona enforcement action against Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) last week in a move that the SEC hopes will finally get the rapper/entrepreneur to testify in the SEC's probe into Iconix, the company that owns the Rocawear brand once owned by the rapper. Jay-Z previously ignored various subpoenas issues by the SEC, and now the federal agency is asking a federal judge to step in.

Though Carter isn't the focus of the probe, the SEC would like to have him testify in order to aid in their investigation into "potential violations" of federal financial disclosure rules by Iconix. Back in 2007, Jay-Z and business partner Damon Dash sold the rights of Rocawear to Iconix for $204 million.

From that point on the SEC says that Carter and Iconix "maintained publicly disclosed partnerships related to the Rocawear brand". In other words, was Jay still involved in the company? The SEC thinks yes and that's why they want him to testify.

Getty Images

The controversy boils down to how Iconix treated the Rocawear brand from an accounting standpoint. In 2015, Iconix suddenly decided to write down $169 million related to the sale. In 2017 it wrote down an additional $34.6 million. These write-downs, which took place a decade after the sale, are what the SEC is upset/curious about. The write-downs may have violated securities laws.

Despite the SEC's repeated efforts to get Carter to testify, they maintain that they "do not reflect a determination by the SEC" that he violated federal law.

In a declaration filed in Manhattan federal court, Jay-Z's lawyers stated that the SEC is on a "celebrity hunt," and that the request is "driven more by governmental fascination with celebrity and headlines than by any proper investigative purpose." In the same declaration, his lawyers stated that Jay Z will appear in court for one day in front of the SEC. The SEC though, reportedly wants him for more than one day of questioning. The Justice Department, refused to comment on the situation.

A hearing is set for later today in Manhattan federal court.

Shaquem Griffin Is Parlaying His Amazing Story Into Multiple Endorsement Deals

Shaquem Griffin may only have one hand, but he's never let that slow him down. At Central Florida, he was one of the top linebackers in college football last year. His fantastic story continued when the Seattle Seahawks took him in the fifth round of the NFL Draft.

Griffin had his hand amputated when he was four years old due to amniotic band syndrome. That didn't stop him from winning the American Athletic Conference defensive player of the year in 2016 or leading Central Florida to an undefeated season this year, capped by a Peach Bowl victory over Auburn.

Then, at the NFL combine, Griffin posted the best 40-yard dash time for a linebacker since 2003 and did 20 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press using a prosthetic hand. His explosive performance was even more impressive considering Griffin wasn't even invited to the combine in the first place.

Now, Griffin's hard work is paying off in a big way.

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images

He's already signed an endorsement contract with Nike and has additional deals in the works with Bose, JCPenney, and Eleven James, a brand that makes luxury watches.

Griffin has gotten plenty of media requests, too. However, he's turned most of them down to focus on football.

Griffin's older brother Shaquil is also on the Seahawks. Head coach Pete Carroll said the team was impressed by Shaquem's combine performance and subsequent interview – and expects the linebacker to "come in here and bust ass."

In the NFL, Griffin may spend time at both linebacker and defensive back. Wherever he ends up on the field, you can bet he'll keep working hard to accomplish his goals. He's been doing it for so long, why stop now?

Egyptian Billionaire Naguib Sawiris Puts Half His Fortune Into Gold

Naguib Sawiris, the second-richest man in Egypt, recently made a pretty big move with half of his almost $6 billion fortune. In response to what he sees as trouble on the horizon for the "overvalued" stock market landscape, Time reports that he has put fully half of his fortune into gold. Here is is briefly on why he made this move:

"In the end you have China and they will not stop consuming. And people also tend to go to gold during crises and we are full of crises right now. Look at the Middle East and the rest of the world and Mr. Trump doesn't help."

MAHMUD TURKIA/AFP/Getty Images

Sawiris predicts that the value of gold will see big gains in the near future, reaching $1,800 an ounce from its present value of around $1,300 for the same amount. Outside of the price of gold, it's not all doom and gloom from Sawiris' future, since he also sees good things ahead if peace talks between North and South Korea are successful in paying off the big investments he's made in North Korea over the last ten years:

"I am taking all the hits, I am being paid in a currency that doesn't get exchanged very easily, I have put a lot of money and built a hotel and did a lot of good stuff there."

Sawiris founded Koryolink, North Korea's first telecom company, but the country's poor world standing makes its currency incompatible with much of the rest of the world, leading to the difficulties he describes above.

Thanks to recent changes in Egyptian law, he's also planning to enter his home country's real estate market for the first time, but he makes it clear that it's not loyalty to Egypt that's encouraging that move:

"In my family we are investing a lot right now because we see the opportunities. It isn't patriotism or advertising or anything like that."

Right now, that includes a huge amount of money being put into gold.

Quentin Tarantino Says He's Owed $4.5M In Royalties From The Weinstein Company

The Weinstein Company's bankruptcy filing at the end of last month was met with harsh but probably well projected scoffs from a variety of Hollywood A-listers, chief among them Quentin Tarantino. The director, who before Harvey Weinstein's fall from grace, was probably the artist most strongly associated with him and alleges that he's owed $4.5 million in back royalties from projects made with The Weinstein Company in an objection filed to the company's bankruptcy sale.

Variety reports that Tarantino's claim centers on four films he directed for The Weinstein Company: Grindhouse, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained, and The Hateful Eight. Tarantino says he's owed royalties amounting to $300,000, $575,000, $1.25 million, and $2.5 million for the four films, respectively.

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

And unfortunately for everyone involved, Tarantino is not alone in alleging missing royalties from The Weinstein Company's better days. He was joined in filing objections to the company's impending bankruptcy sale by Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jake Gyllenhaal, Bill Murray, Julia Roberts, Rachel McAdams, and even author Stephen King all filed objections of their own, many with similar allegations of royalties owed.

Despite these objections, The Weinstein Company selected a $310 million winning bid from Lantern Capital, as per a statement from Weinstein Company Board of Representatives member Ivona Smith:

"Lantern's bid clearly achieves the highest and best value for the estate and its creditors. We look forward to working with Lantern to close the transaction and consummate the going concern sale."

The board also says that it "regrets that it cannot undo the damage Harvey Weinstein caused, but hopes that today's events will mark a new beginning. Even as the Company heads into bankruptcy, the Company remains committed to doing whatever it can to maximize value for its creditors and, in cooperation with Attorney General, continue its pursuit of justice for any victims."

Aerosmith Has Made The Majority Of Its Money From Something Totally Unexpected. More Than Music Sales, Merchandise, Touring…

$

Sometimes it seems like Aerosmith has been around since God was a child.  It's tough to go anywhere in the world without hearing an Aerosmith song played on the radio at least once a day, if not once an hour.  Even when the band was struggling with inter-personal issues, they were still selling out stadiums and blazing up the charts. With all that success, you'd think their album sales would have made them wealthy, wealthy men.  And yes, they have sold over 150 million albums worldwide. And yes, each band member now sports a net worth in the $100 million+ range. But here's the strange reality: The majority of Aerosmith's money did not come from their multi-platinum records. Believe it or not, the band has made the the majority of its money without actually having to play a single instrument or sell a single album. Turns out, their real fortunes have actually come in the form of royalties and licensing fees off a little video game called: "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith".

Aerosmith formed in 1970 in Boston.  The original lineup included lead singer, Steven Tyler, guitarist Joe Perry, bassist Tom Hamilton, guitarist Ray Tabano, and drummer Joey Kramer. A year later, Tabano left and Brad Whitford joined the group, and the first great iteration of Aerosmith was born. By 1972, they'd developed a strong fan base in the Boston area, and Columbia Records came calling.  They released their first album, "Aerosmith" in 1973.  The release of their third album, "Toys in the Attic", in 1975, shot them into the stratosphere. The group would dominate the airwaves for the next five years, churning out hit song after hit song, and headlining hugely popular tours. Their fan base was so large and passionate that they were collectively nicknamed the "Blue Army".

Like most mega-rock bands, the group eventually fell apart due to drug use and in-fighting. Both Joe Perry and Brad Whitford left the group, and two replacement guitarists were brought in between 1980 and 1984.  The one album released during this time was only moderately successful.  The return of Perry and Whitford in 1984 led to the release of a solid album in 1985, but fan interest had waned.  Then in 1986, Perry and Tyler teamed up with Run-D.M.C. to record the smash hit single, "Walk this Way", and suddenly they were back on top. After each member of the band made their way through rehab, the group hit their groove again. They have continued to tour and release successful albums since then.  To date, they have amassed 25 gold albums, 18 platinum albums, 12 multi-platinum albums, and 21 Top 40 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.  They've also snagged four Grammys, six American Music Awards, and ten MTV Video Music Awards.

Getty

On top of being one of the most successful, and long-running rock groups ever, they are also one of the most business savvy.  In 2007, when the band was preparing to start recording a new album, they licensed 29 of their classic hits to Activision, the publishing company in charge of "Guitar Hero". A new version of "Guitar Hero" was developed around the band.  The game, "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith", was released on June 29, 2008.  While reviews were initially a little tepid due to the fact that you had to really like Aerosmith in order to want to play the game, the band ended up coming out on top.  Their undeniably catchy power ballads, and dirty rock with a heavy blues influence, was a hit with the faux-guitar playing set.  The game sold almost 600,000 copies its first week, raking in over $25 million in sales.  Three months later, those numbers had increased to 1 million copies purchased and over $50 million in sales.  AS of this writing, more than 4 million copies of the game had found their way into homes around the world. And along the way, Aerosmith's royalties added up fast. The game has been so successful that the CEO of Activision actually came out and claimed that their game royalties vastly outweigh their lifetime income from any other source. That includes albums sales, merchandising and touring. According to Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick:

"Their version of Guitar Hero generated far more in revenues than any Aerosmith album ever has…. Merchandising, concert sales, even their ability to sign a new contract have all been unbelievably influenced by their participation in Guitar Hero."

As if all that wasn't awesome enough, the game has also introduced the group to a whole new generation of fans, and subsequently their album sales have increased by nearly 40%! Truly unbelievable for a band that got its start playing in bars in Boston more than 40 years ago.  Their ascent to the top of the rock world had to survive drug addictions, personal problems, physical injuries and many failed relationships.  Ironically, after all of that, the group has seemingly achieved their most lasting worldwide fame and fortune because of a video game!

Former 49ers Safety Eric Reid Is Filing A Collusion Grievance Against The NFL…How Much Money Has He Lost?

Former 49ers safety Eric Reid was one of the first players to join Colin Kaepernick's protest against social injustice by kneeling during the National Anthem. And now, Reid is joining Kaepernick once again by filing a collusion grievance against the NFL. In fact, Reid is using the same lawyer as Kaepernick, too.

Reid, 26, has remained unsigned since March. Kaepernick, who's remained unsigned for a year, filed his collusion grievance in October.

While Kaepernick's playing style may not be suitable for a lot of teams, it's hard to say Reid couldn't help most of the franchises in the NFL. He's arguably a top ten safety in the league, and based on what other players at his position make, he's missing out on a huge amount of money.

The top 35 safeties in the league will each make at least $4 million this year. The average 2018 salary of the top ten highest-paid safeties will be about $10.25 million, with the Chiefs' Eric Berry leading the way at $13 million.

Lachlan Cunningham/Getty Images

That means Reid, who is still very much of a starting caliber, is missing out on between $4 million and $13 million in 2018. And chances are he'd be signing a multi-year deal worth even more than that.

Reid believes the problem lies with owners, not GMs. He's gone on record to say he should be signed for his talent, not his social stances.

However, NFL free agency can be a lonely place for an outspoken player. Reid got a firsthand look at his former teammate's experience – and now he's going through the same thing.

Power Rangers Billionaire Haim Saban's $50M Donation To The Upcoming Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

Billionaire Haim Saban, best known for his hand in the creation of the still ongoing Power Rangers franchise, also has a strong history of philanthropy. But when he was approached to possibly make a large donation to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Forbes reports he wasn't interested, as his family foundation typically dealt with causes like "children, education and women's health." He agreed to a meeting with Disney CEO and the Academy Museum's fundraising chief Bob Iger, along with Tom Hanks and Annette Bening, though, which contrary to what you might have guessed, didn't quite change his mind. As Saban tells it, the meeting went like this:

"Bob Iger, who chairs the fundraising, came to see me and we had breakfast. After a while he gave me a whole presentation and asked for $50 million."

After the presentation, the two friends parted amicably, with Saban telling Iger he would go home and discuss the matter with his wife. And it was then that the change of heart you were guessing about earlier actually took place:

"I told her I am going to say no, and she said, 'Are you crazy?' I said 'Why am I crazy; what did I do?' She said, 'It's such an important endeavor and your legacy, you cannot say no to this.' So, of course, I said yes."

Araya Diaz/Getty Images

In September of last year, Saban pledged $50 million towards the museum's opening and operations, and one of its main wings has been renamed Saban Building as a result. The donation represents the largest single gift in Saban's entire philanthropic career so far, and his wife and partner-in-giving, Cheryl, had some glowing words about what the museum will provide to visitors once it opens sometime in 2019:

"People can get inside of what it takes to make a movie, what it takes to bring that magic life— from the spark of an idea, to writing a script to really making it happen with the scenery, the costumes, the sound, the set."

Cheryl characterized the gift as a reciprocation of what the film industry has given the Sabans, who've called Los Angeles home for over 30 years.

LeBron James is one of the greatest basketball players to ever play the game. But he's an incredibly savvy businessman, too. In fact, his off-the-court endeavors might be even more impressive than what he's done on the floor.

And he doesn't even need to stay in his own sport to have success.

James invested 2% into Liverpool, F.C. back in 2011. His initial investment was worth a reported $6.2 million. In the seven years since, LeBron has watched his money multiply by nearly five times – his stake is now worth $30 million.

Liverpool faces off against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Final at the end of May. If Liverpool pulls off the upset, the club will be worth even more, further boosting James's earnings.

James received his stake when his marketing firm, LRMR, agreed to a joint venture with Fenway Sports Partners. Boston Red Sox owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner own Fenway Sports Partners, and the company bought Liverpool for $477 million in October 2010 – about half of what the old owners were looking to sell for.

The investment has proven quite lucrative, with Liverpool now being worth just under $1.5 billion. The trip to the UEFA Champions League final guarantees the club at least $100 million.

It's just the latest story of a LeBron investment performing well. We doubt it'll be the last one, either.
