Hedge Fund Manager Gets $1 Billion Tax Bill

0

Tax Day has just past us. A stack of 1099s in a zip lock bag can be a daunting challenge to face – and I have – but at least it didn't come with a $1 billion tax bill. Can you believe that? It isn't an exaggeration! Hedge fund manager John Paulson owes $1 billion in taxes according to the Wall Street Journal. That means he will have to send 11 separate checks to the IRS, because the agency only takes checks for under $100 million.

John Paulson made a chunk of his $10 billion fortune by betting against subprime mortgages before the 2007-2008 financial crisis that so many Americans lost their homes. That move made his hedge fund $15 billion and made him $4 billion. At the time, he could postpone paying taxes on those earnings due to a convenient loophole in the tax code. That loophole has now closed and taxes on those profits are due and payable to the tune of the $1 billion tax bill we mentioned earlier.

Joe Raedle/Getty Images

Paulson's original tax bill for the earnings was $1.5 billion. That is likely the largest individual tax payment in history. He paid $500 million of that in late 2017.

Paulson won't be the only one to be hit with an extra large tax bill this year. The Joint Committee on Taxation estimates that the closing of that loophole could bring in $25 billion in tax revenue. Other sources, such as the Wall Street Journal, believe the tax revenue could be much more.

In addition to the enormous billion dollar tax bill, Paulson has also made a series of investment mistakes recently that have caused him to lose nearly $20 billion.

Paulson is a friend of Donald Trump and was a major donor to his campaign for president.

Not Having This Clause In His Contract Could Cost Dez Bryant Millions

The Dallas Cowboys cut Dez Bryant last week. As the receiver looks for a new home, he'll likely regret not having one key clause in his old contract.

Former NFL agent Joel Corry noted Bryant's contract didn't include a roster bonus paid on the first or third day of the new league year. Had the contract featured that language, the Cowboys would probably have released him much sooner to avoid paying the bonus.

Instead, Bryant hits free agency after many big-name signings have already been completed. Additionally, few teams have the cap space to offer him a large deal.

by Elsa/Getty Images

Bryant was owed $12.5 million this season.

The 29-year-old has a history of antics – both on the field and off of it – that finally drove the Cowboys to cut him. Despite a dip in production this season, he's still a capable player. But he may have trouble finding a team able to sign him for an amount close to what he was owed.

Other receivers have received significant deals already this offseason. Sammy Watkins joined the Chiefs on a three-year, $48 million contract, and the Bears signed Allen Robinson to a three-year, $42 million deal.

Bryant may yet still get a big contract from a team. But because he didn't have the proper language in his contract, the Cowboys waited a long time to release their star receiver. It could ultimately cost him millions of dollars.

Washington Paid For Chadwick Boseman To Attend Oxford Theater Program, Over 20 Years Ago

Chadwick Boseman is one of hottest names in Hollywood after starring in the hit movie 'Black Panther.' The movie, which has broken a number of box office records over the course of its past two months, is Boseman's most successful role to date. But Boseman's current success might have been made possible thanks to an act of kindness from another famous Hollywood actor a few years back.

Boseman, who is currently 41-years-old, studied at Howard University in the late 90s. While he attended the historically black college, he and some of his fellow students decided to apply to a theater program at The University of Oxford in England. Boseman and his fellow classmates got in, but couldn't afford to attend to go. That's when his acting teacher and mentor, The Cosby Show's Phylicia Rashad, decided to step in.

Boseman told Rolling Stone magazine that Rashad "pushed for us," and that "she essentially got some celebrity friends to pay for us to go."

(Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images for Disney)

After Boseman finished up the program, he received a beneficiary letter and figured out who paid for him to attend; Denzel Washington. He wrote Washington a thank you letter, but never gave it to him, and never told anyone else about it for over 20 years.

When Boseman was on The Tonight Show earlier this year, he told Jimmy Fallon that he has "basically been holding this secret [his] whole career," because he didn't want Washington to feel like he owed him anything else. He said that he wanted to meet him in person before saying anything, but after 20 years he felt like it would be okay to reveal it to the world.

Coincidentally, Boseman revealed on Fallon that before the Rolling Stone interview went to print, he finally got to meet Washington at the New York premiere of Black Panther, which according to Boseman was an "amazing" experience.

The Black Panther star said that when they met, he thanked Washington for paying for his Oxford experience over two decades ago. In response, Washington replied in jest, "Oh, so that's why I'm here. You owe me money! I came to collect!"

Bill Gates Invests In $1 Billion Project To Surround The Earth With Livestreaming Satellites

A new company called EarthNow wants to keep a bigger, faster, and sharper eye on the planet we all call home, and it now counts Bill Gates among its chief investors. The company recently announced the closing of its first round of financing, which in addition to Gates also includes Airbus, the SoftBank Group, and engineer Greg Wyler. It sounds like science fiction (and not particularly benign in that context), but EarthNow's stated goal is to "deploy a large constellation of advanced imaging satellites that will deliver real-time, continuous video of almost anywhere on Earth." Here's the founder and CEO of EarthNow, Russell Hannigan, on his plan to put eyes in the sky:

"EarthNow is ambitious and unprecedented, but our objective is simple; we want to connect you visually with Earth in real-time. We believe the ability to see and understand the Earth live and unfiltered will help all of us better appreciate and ultimately care for our one and only home."

DOMINIC LIPINSKI/AFP/Getty Images

What the company's press release does not disclose is exactly how much scratch Gates or any of the other investors are putting into EarthNow, but Hannigan told The Wall Street Journal that the project's total cost will be about a billion dollars. A lot of money, but when you're dealing with investors at the level of Bill Gates or SoftBank, very achievable.

The main focus of EarthNow's HD video streaming satellites will be for "government and enterprise customers," with an impressive cluster of possible applications put out there by the company itself. Take a look:

"Applications include catching illegal fishing in the act, watching hurricanes and typhoons as they evolve, detecting forest fires the moment they start, watching volcanoes the instant they start to erupt, assisting the media in telling stories from around the world, tracking large whales as they migrate, helping "smart cities" become more efficient, providing on-demand data about crop health, and observing conflict zones around the world."

Whew. But EarthNow also intends to give the masses access to its real-time video content of the Earth viewed from space, with smartphone and tablet apps to be developed at the same time. Stay tuned.

Billionaire Roundup: Welcome To The New World

Technology moves pretty fast. That was illustrated recently when Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress and it became very clear that the politicians really did not understand the coding and technology behind Facebook. We've got an insight into Zuckerberg's personal security detail, though. That's something the geezers in Washington DC should understand. Also, Elon Musk tweeted a picture of the couch he sleeps on in his office and the internet lost their collective minds. Billionaire Stephen Schwartzman tried to give his high school alma mater an enormous donation, but they turned him down. And finally, the Fyre Festival disaster is about to get the Hollywood treatment. Buckle up, party people, this is the latest edition of the Billionaire Roundup.

Mark Zuckerberg's Security Detail Costs Facebook Millions
Facebook spent more than $8.8 million on Mark Zuckerberg's security and personal travel last year. This is in addition to the official $1 Zuckerberg earns as his salary for being CEO. Most of his income comes from his Facebook stock, which is worth around $24 billion. Those security and travel expenses are higher than the $5.8 million Facebook spent on its CEO in 2016. Of the $8.8 million, $7.3 million was for personal security and $1.5 million was for travel by private plane.

The Internet Wants To Buy Elon Musk A New Couch
Recently, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk gave CBS this morning a tour of the Tesla factory in Fremont, California. While on the tour, the camera crew visited his office and the sad state of the couch he often uses as a bed when pulling all-nighters was revealed to the world. This couch is so narrow that Musk admitted to sleeping on the floor because it was more comfortable. Well, once the internet got word of that, they went nuts. A GoFundMe account was set up to buy the billionaire a new couch. As of the writing of this article, 277 people have raised $3,756 to buy Elon Musk a new couch. It's a nice gesture and all, but Musk has a net worth of $20 billion, the man can buy his own couch.

Billionaire Tried To Donate $25 Million To High School, Was Declined
Billionaire Stephen Schwarzman wanted to donate $25 million to his high school alma mater, Abington High School in Pennsylvania. The school board and community were stoked, until they heard his demands in exchange for the money. In exchange for the $25 million, Schwarzman wanted a number of things, including renaming the school Abington Schwarzman High School and making sure that new name was posted above at least six entrances of the school. He also demanded that parts of the campus be named after his brothers, his former high school track coach, and two friends of his from the track team back in the 1960s. He also wanted his portrait displayed prominently in the school. Schwarzman also wanted input into the construction of the new campus, including the right to approve contractors. The school board approved the plan without input from the community. When residents learned that Schwarzman had basically bought naming rights to the school they pushed back. The school board then rescinded the agreement with Schwarzman and voted on a new agreement that gives Schwarzman a greatly reduced role, including not naming the school after him or allowing him to have contractor approval or his portrait hung at the school.

Fyre Festival Becoming A Docu-Series
Finally! We're going to get an in-depth, behind the scenes look at the Fyre Festival debacle. Hulu has greenlit a multi-episode documentary series on the disastrous music festival, which is set to premiere in 2019. According to Deadline, the series will recount the events leading up to and during the Fyre Festival including its collapse and the aftermath. The Fyre Festival was supposed to be an upscale music festival in the Bahamas filled with models, music, cocktails, high end food, and luxurious accommodations. When attendees arrived, there were no luxury accommodations or high-end food. There were basic tents and cheese sandwiches. Guest were left wandering the beach looking for food and a way off the island. The Fyre Festival was organized by Billy McFarland and rapper Ja Rule. The docu-series will feature interviews with inside sources including festival goers, vendors, investors, local Bahamians, and others. Hulu said the series is aimed to be a cautionary tale for millennials about the corruptive power of ambition without the experience to back it up and the instant gratification of the social media generation.

It seems like it would take a lifetime to make a billion dollars or more. Not so anymore, in our era of tech companies and internet startups. All 13 billionaires below made their fortunes by founding a tech company. From Facebook to Yahoo to Snap, these men made their multi-billion dollar fortunes at a lightning pace. Of them, it took Jeff Bezos the longest and that was just a six-year period. As a consolation prize, he is the world's richest person.

Jeff Bezos – 6 years
Amazon
Net Worth: $114 billion
Back in 1993, Jeff Bezos started a little online bookstore called Amazon.com. In 1997, he took Amazon public. In 1999, he joined the billionaire's club with a $10 billion fortune.

Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy – 3 years
Snapchat
Spiegel Net Worth: $4 billion
Murphy Net Worth: $3.8 billion
Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy founded Snapchat in 2011. By 2014, their stock holdings in their popular startup app were worth more than $1 billion. Snap went public in 2016, making the pair multi-billionaires.

Pierre Omidyar – 3 years
eBay
Net Worth: $7.8 billion

All three founders of Groupon, Eric Lefkofsky, Andrew Mason, and Brad Keywell hit it big in 2011 when the company went public. Only Lefkofsky remains a billionaire today. Keywell's net worth is $600 million and Mason's is $230 million.

Mark Zuckerberg – 4 years

Stan Lee Is Suing His Ex Business Manager Over Forged Checks, Missing Money, And Stolen Blood

0
0

You've probably heard that things are not going super well for Marvel creator and beloved mascot, Stan Lee. Stories have been swirling around the 95-year-old superhero creator that would seem far-fetched in a Marvel comic book, the most lurid being the accusation that a quantity of his blood had been stolen from him and used to make ink for signing unauthorized collectibles. That, and a few more mundane charges, are included in a lawsuit recently filed by Stan against his former business manager Jerardo Olivarez and reported on by TMZ.

The lawsuit accuses Olivarez (described as one of many "unscrupulous businessmen, sycophants and opportunists" who the suit characterizes as having descended upon Lee after the death of his wife Joan last summer) of ordering a nurse to extract some of Stan's blood, which was reportedly later used to sign a few old issues of the newly popular Black Panther series with a "Hand-Stamped Signature of STAN LEE using Stan Lee's Solvent DNA Ink," apparently without his consent. It also charges Olivarez with swindling Lee out of more than $1.4 million "through a series of complicated wire-transfers all initiated" by Olivarez, and partially through forged checks.

Rich Polk/Getty Images

Lee accuses Olivarez of purchasing a $850,000 West Hollywood condo in Lee's name without his OK, while the suit also mentions a forged check for $300,000, ostensibly for a loan towards a nonprofit that turned out to be fake. He says Olivarez convinced him to fire both his longtime attorney and banker before signing over power of attorney to Olivarez, all in bad faith. Then there's the damage Lee says Olivarez caused his personal brand by coercing him into bad deals that cheapened the value of his famous name and likeness.

For all this, Lee is reportedly seeking some $20 million in damages from his former business manager.
